Elvis and The Imposters, Philadelphia, PA, October 24, 2021

Post by Man out of Time »

Elvis and The Imposters, with Charlie Sexton play the Met in Philadelphia on Sunday, October 24. This is Elvis' first appearance at The Met after 16 previous shows at other venues in the City Perhaps someone local to Philadelphia can explain this.

According to their website, the venue has recently undergone a $56 million refurbishment, and as a venue built in 1908 it is the sort of venue that Elvis favours. Hopefully the refurbishment has resulted in a good acoustic.

The venue requires attendees to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours of the event OR full COVID-19 vaccination (at least two weeks after final dose). Proof must be a copy of a negative test result or vaccination, or the original vaccination card.

In accordance with local guidelines. Until further notice, masks are required to worn at all times for attendees, regardless of vaccination status, except while actively eating or drinking.

Local radio station WXPN previewed the show back in July, and maybe Elvis will drop by with another signed promo copy of "Magnificent Hurt".

Who's going?

"Doing door at a Elvis Costello show. Not surprised at old dudes throwing fits about needing to be vaxed. I am surprised how many have walked up drinking beer that are surprised they can’t bring it inside."

This was my first time in the venue. Sat in the first row in a fancy Grand Salle box with a great view. The acoustics were excellent. The audience was energetic but not obnoxious. EC's voice was solid and of course the band was in fine form. Pete never fails to amaze, a virtuoso of the drum kit. I agree with the general consensus that Charlie should be featured more, but I guess he's used to being a side man at this point. I'm not crazy about the slowed down Brilliant Mistake, but the slowed down The Comedians is really nice. I think Country Darkness was an audible (not on the original setlist) as it was played while EC was having technical issues with his guitar. The uptempo new songs - Farewell, OK and Magnificent Hurt - sound great in the live setting.

Finally, a pet peeve of mine - the stage is too dark! Good for mood, I suppose, but I would prefer more light.
