Cher Mark Zuckerberg - Steve Nieve writes.....

Post by Man out of Time »

Steve has had a letter to Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO and subject of "The Social Network") published in French newspaper L'Obs.

Steve Nieve

Mai 2020"

And helpfully translated into English on the newspaper's website:

" Dear Mark Zuckerberg,
I am Steve Nieve, I work for forty years with Elvis Costello, and this year 2020 we won the Grammy award 2020, and we had a short tour of the UK, and then we went into lock-down and confinement. After an initial moment of shock all the artists and creators mainly musicians began to share on your Facebook and Instagram their talents, their works, their generosity. Perhaps, even you have been able to enjoy some of our performances on your platforms.

We are helping thousands of people in our modest ways to endure isolation. Live music online is another way to do healthcare these days. In the meantime, Big Data are enormously nourished by this will, and by the creativity of these artists. We hope that you are aware of this situation. We have seen recently followed your conference on line, where you underline what you are going to do in order to help different categories of people in distress because of Covid19. We have the feeling that you have forgotten us artists, creators, people who work in cultural fields.

Would you propose to us a remedy for this omission?

Us artists and musicians in confinement cannot do anymore concert performances or recordings. Already we see our incomes melting dramatically. Some of us have copyrights and those that have them can keep going, providing they are respected. I don’t ask for myself. But many working musicians are left now without anything and for months and months to come. This economic disaster is going to continue and no-one knows for how long.

Mark, we all connect people: us, through music, you, through apps and data. What about sharing a part of the money you are making out of all these connections? What about redistributing a part of your benefit with these musicians and artists giving their work? Even if you just calculate this starting when this crisis began in December.

Facebook and other social media have always been a place of community where we support each other. And it would mean a lot to see you at the spearhead of this movement.

I guess you have received a lot of requests like this from other artists, as our friends Laurie Anderson, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, … Don’t let our voices be unheard. These voices are the same that so many people are listening to, to calm their anxiousness.

Thank you for giving your attention to this letter. Would you please share it for us with Larry Page, (Google), Sundar Pichai (Alphabet), Sergei Brin (Google), Eric Schmidt. (Alphabet), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Tim Cook (Apple) ?

Nice touch to ask Mark to share it with his "chums" at Google, Alphabet, Google, Microsoft and Apple. EC knows Tim Cook, as he has played at product launches for Apple, so perhaps he could share it too.

Nice note. Hope he gets a response. FB only has to provide a paywall, plug in for live streams so the artists themselves can monetize it. Pay per minute / per song / or monthly sub. Patreon is a good platform for monetizing artist’s work online. I have a sub set up for a musician I know. It’s cool. He posts monthly journal notes, special tunes only for subscribers. Not sure if Patreon has a live stream option. That would be cool. I’m enjoying these live stream events. Hope someone out there is thinking of new ways for artists to make money during these times. I imagine something will surface soon. Musicians need an outlet. Fans need this just as much as the artists.
