That's a brilliant precis of what Level 42 always seemed to represent to me in the 80s, BA ! More about the pose than anything else. Mark King was a good bassist but his style of slap-playing wore remarkably thin after two or three listens and it seemed sometimes like a very poor attempt to be a commercial Weather Report ( sadly with a degree of success !) I never, ever thought of them as a good band only a mediocre band fronted by a good bassist !

A review of the festival by Steve Clements, published in The Brighton Source on 6 July 2018 included this paragraph on EC and the Imposters and a photograph by Francesca Moore:

"The weekend’s most contentious booking was headliner Elvis Costello, who said he was honoured to be on the same bill as Pharoah Sanders (in a strange mid-Atlantic accent). Despite the presence of original Attractions Steve Nieve and Pat Thomas and a string of hits, Costello gave a lacklustre performance with a shot voice and some really off-key vocals in places. * We have since found out that Elvis has cancelled the rest of his tour following a serious operation, so top marks for fulfilling his booking and we wish him a speedy recovery."

Pat Thomas is the brother of Bren who, together with the legendary Irish folk singer Padraig McElvey, formed a sort of folkrock/punk trio in Sligo in the late 80s. They were never either good or famous !
