The song you're most proud of?

Pfff ... It's impossible to say. I wrote about it in the four hundred. If I quote one, it will exclude a whole section of my music. And then "proud" would not be the right word. I can have various feelings towards my songs. I could get away with a pirouette at the Duke Ellington saying the best is my next ... Let's say I'm pretty proud of a new song that's featured in a movie that's out these days [Do not die in Liverpool, by Paul McGuigan, with Annette Bening and Jamie Bell - ed.]. It is the last one I recorded, so I'm proud of it, it sticks with the film but especially I think it holds well by itself. It is a ballad entitled You Shouldn’t Look At Me That Way, of which I wrote the orchestration myself.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

‘Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool’ Review

‘Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool’ Actress Gloria Grahame won an Academy Award for her performance in 1952’s “The Bad and the Beautiful”. She also had roles in numerous other Hollywood classics, including “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “Oklahoma!” and “The Greatest Show on Earth”. Grahame was married four times, but it’s a late-in-life romance (post-divorce No. 4) that’s the focus of “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”. Annette Bening stars as Grahame in this well-intentioned but simple bio-drama.

The film is based on a 1986 memoir by Peter Turner, who met Grahame in 1979 when the actress moved to Liverpool to star in a play. He was 28, she was in her mid-50s. The couple quickly fell in love. But a happy ending was not in the script.

Jamie Bell (of “Billy Elliot” fame) plays Turner. Bening gets top billing, but Bell has just as much, if not more, screentime. Actually, “Film Stars” is really Peter’s story about Gloria: how she came into his life and changed it forever.

The first hour is somewhat flat and uninspired. It takes a while to get used to Bening speaking in her soft, high-pitched voice. And scenes with Peter’s family (including his mum, played by Julie Walters – in a very similar role to her character in “Brooklyn”) sitting around the kitchen table are all too common. Bening and Bell are fine together, but the relationship highs and lows of Gloria and Peter are way too ordinary.

Thankfully director Paul McGuigan provides a final act that’s simply excellent. He and writer Matt Greenhalgh flip the switch – finally giving us Gloria’s perspective of this story. A pivotal sequence that’s both emotionally gripping and devastating is a showcase for Bening. The final 30 minutes of “Film Stars” deliver the power that’s lacking up until that point. We get to truly understand what acting, celebrity, Peter and life itself all mean to Gloria – and can’t help but feel for her when all of these start slipping away.

Credit McGuigan for a few other smart decisions: He incorporates real-life images and actual movie reel footage of Grahame into scenes with Bening and Bell (including when the couple is watching one of her old B&W films). And a new Elvis Costello song that plays during the closing credits was the perfect choice. “You Shouldn’t Look At Me That Way” is a heartfelt ballad and legit Awards Season contender.

The video for "You Shouldn't Look At Me That Way" should turn up here at some point:

Whatever is here now is not Elvis. None of the links on the page seem to work, but perhaps watch this space?

It works for me.
It’s a great balad with big orchestration.
And a nice video (lipsyncing could be better).

i'm finding that the link works sort of every second time. can't download.

almost a bit of a Bacharach "sort" of song. very long winding melody line, great strings, great emotion...must listen again...reminders of both "painted from memory" and "she."

"Don't take more than I offer
Oh, my love, or I'll make you suffer"

I can't make this play on my Android phone, my Windows laptop or my Apple iPad. It's described as an Elvis emotional tearjerker, so I'm sold and officially champing at the bit now! More details, please, from anyone who's heard it!!!

plays in Switzerland as well!

Amazing song, very much in the tradition of "Painted from memory" and - especially the atmosphere in the video - "She", he's just such a wonderful songwriter and singer. And always so fully involved in the things he's doing, without any compromises, self-assured in its best meaning.

And musically still so high above most of the regular stuff, even in respect to other well-regarded songwriters.

Fantastic!

I'm practically tearing my hair out with frustration that I can't hear this yet. My expectations are too high, though - I should tone them down to save myself being disappointed!

P.S. his people should definitely try to get this played on 'Elaine Paige on Sunday', Radio 2 - it fits her remit of songs from films or shows.

Am I fine, am I pleasing?
Are you fitting in [?], or are you teasing?
You shouldn’t look at me
You shouldn’t look at me that way

Should a glance from you just see through me?
If a glimpse of you could undo me
You shouldn’t look at me
You shouldn’t look at me that way

Time, among all of your enemies
Leaves you nothing but bitter memories

From the first blush of affection
To avoiding your own reflection
You shouldn’t look at me
You shouldn’t look at me that way

Now the flashbulbs may dazzle
While you’re figuring out this puzzle
You shouldn’t look at me
You shouldn’t look at me that way

Don’t take more than I offer
Oh my love, or I’ll make you suffer
You shouldn’t look at me
You shouldn’t look at me that way

Time, among all of your enemies
Makes the sky [ ] gravity

From the first blush of intention
To avoiding your own reflection
You shouldn’t look at me
You shouldn’t look at me that way

You shouldn’t look at me that way.

Nice set o' lyrics. He's used mainly half-rhymes - I wonder if it's deliberate?
