London meet up - Saturday 22nd July
A London meet up has been arranged on Saturday 22nd July from 2pm at the Woodins Shades pub, 212 Bishopsgate, London EC2M 4PT.
So far we have a veritable feast of esteemed Board members:
Sulky lad
Sheeptotheslaughter
Neil.
Johnfoyle
Andy the roofdog
and I'll be considerably dragging the tone down.
Everybody is invited - it'd be great to see you, not only so that someone else can bear the brunt of Neil.'s singing...
Cheers

John - please let us get a word in
I loved Terry's work when I read the NME all those years ago.
I'm just hoping the Elvis surveillance van is not parked across the road from the pub

Hoping to join you all too, on this occasion, with my better half, who is now a veteran of 4 EC shows (including one with the Imps) in three countries.
Shall we all bring a copy of the Beano Summer Special, to help Terry find us?

I have extended an invitation to attend to Mark Schnitzius. Mark has recently moved from Australia to England.
Those of us who remember the Elvis Costello Home Page (when John Everingham hosted it), before Dr Spooky took it on and created the Wiki, may recognise the name. Mark is credited on the home page as "Emeritus developer". Mark has indicated his intention to join us, so this is your chance to ask him what "Emeritus Developer" means.

V.G. - Thanks for your message yesterday. Unfortunately, I shan't be able to attend as I have family over from Australia and can't duck out.
Hope you all have a great time - it looks like it's going to be a good meet up.

By the way, our top man, Sheeptotheslaughter, had commandeered some reserved seating downstairs. Hopefully this will appease Neil.

Trust me, I've already put that motion forward. I simply cannot understand why it's only me who thinks it's a perfect example of British (and Irish) enlightenment!verbal gymnastics wrote:Bring them up to London to while away a traditional Saturday afternoon

I have to say I do agree with Neil. I try and pretend 'I'm young and cool' still but I too need a sit down when I drink too. We should be at the back of the pub but if they cant fit us in they will move us upstairs.verbal gymnastics wrote:By the way, our top man, Sheeptotheslaughter, had commandeered some reserved seating downstairs. I have a visit to the podiatrist at 10 I may need a drink to numb the pain afterwards. I should be there for two. Mrs Sheep isn't meeting us until later so she wont hold me up

At least that will appease you as well - no wonder you were so keen to try and book seating!
By the way, do you mean Mrs Sheep won't be holding you up figuratively or literally?
Look forward as ever to seeing you all.

Four hours of chat just flew by . Thanks Verbal for organising it. Terry Staunton was glad to meet so many like minded people. Jean & Chris , well known in fan circles, from California were in town , join us along with globe trotting Mark.

Re: London meet up - Saturday 22nd July
It was another great afternoon despite sulky lad and Andy the Roofdog not being able to make it. Great picture although Mrs Sheeptotheslaughter is not in it as she came along later to top up the glamour stakes, and Terry Staunton had left by that stage.
John and I were initially pleased that the police van was not parked over the road like last time. However a police van turned up later on and parked up to keep an eye on us again I presume!
Funnily enough within various conversations I didn't really speak about Elvis at all. I suppose that could be partly because there's nothing to report this side of the pond (although there were a couple of people who had heard a rumour about the Imperial Chambers tour coming to the UK in November).
Back when I started these meet ups in about 2003 ( ) it was solely forum members. Nowadays there are different platforms so we have a fan forum meet up from Facebook friends etc. Everybody is welcome and it's great to see the efforts people make to get there. It truly is international!
When the last 5 of us left at about 8pm, as I was walking down Bishopsgate I heard some live music and walked down an alleyway and found myself at a pub called the Lamb Tavern. So I watched and this band was playing 60s music brilliantly. They are called Modern Apes (http://www.modernapes.band). I chatted to the lead singer afterwards and he was impressed that I knew the words to all the songs!
Anyway it turned out that they were playing a wedding (as there were only a few people outside at that stage so it was not easy to tell). I happily sang and danced for the next 2 hours. One young lady came up to me and asked if I was the groom's father which was the best chat up line I have heard! It got busier later but everyone was cool about me being there - I'm a harmless sort of chap and kept out of the way, particularly when a photographer tried to snap me with somebody.
Also, despite it pouring with rain at various times I dodged the rain every time. All in all a terrific day.

Yeah, great turnout - thanks for organising, Verbal - had a great time. Great to meet everyone of course, but it was a bit of a coup to get Mark S., the Elvis website pioneer! To next time!
