EC at New York's Electric Lady Studios, May 2017

Post by And No Coffee Table »

Two weeks ago Steven Mandel, the co-producer of Wise Up Ghost, tweeted cryptically:
Steven Mandel wrote:The countdown is on. T minus 2 weeks. #WWC @ElectricLady @ImposterSpeaks @RoderickHohl @RayAngry @gabrielgordon19 @SirDaveJonze
Early this morning he posted this photo on Instagram with the caption "We are a gang. Who write love ballads."

Image

A second photo has a caption quoting Paul Simon's "Old Friends/Bookends Theme": "Time it was, and what a time it was, it was / A time of innocence, A time of confidences / Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph / Preserve your memories; They're all that's left you."

Image

The photos were taken at New York's Electric Lady Studios. From left to right we have Ray Angry (a longtime Roots collaborator who plays on Wise Up Ghost), Rod Hohl (a New York-based guitarist), Elvis, Steven Mandel, and David Slitzky (@SirDaveJonze, the engineer for the next Roots album).

Not included in the photos but mentioned in the first tweet is Gabriel Gordon, who is Natalie Merchant's guitarist.

I still have no idea what #WWC refers to.

Steven Mandel also tweeted this to Elvis on April 25:
Steven Mandel wrote:Hey I've got nothing to do today but smile. #WWC @ImposterSpeaks
That's another Paul Simon lyric (from "The Only Living Boy in New York").

David Slitzky on Instagram:

Image

Caption: "Elvis Costello, Wishing We Could in Last Night's Office. Still marveling from the moment, and feeling very fortunate for the time spent with these wise figures working on an incredible piece of art. Congrats, Steve. You earned this and more."

So #WWC is Wishing We Could.

Feels like this may only be a one or two song thing, maybe a contribution to some larger project? Doubt it will be a whole album's worth of work. I certainly hope I'm wrong!

Oh my God, I've jumped the gun again. Last week it was a new Macca album, this week a new Steve Mandel! Aw well, one song - presumably a big ballad - is better than none.

Neil. - it'll probably be a 15 song CD, with Elvis singing lead on one or two songs. But no doubt we'll subsequently find out afterwards that 50 songs were recorded, there are 35 left in the can and 20 of them have Elvis singing lead vocal. And it was all recorded in 3 days.

Agreed, VG but just wait until 2047 when the full set of songs will be released on vinyl, wax cylinder, cassette ( with bonus tape hiss!) and available as download straight to your aural implant via the Apple iNsert - including demos, alternate takes, bonus tracks and a version of Bruce Thomas singing harmony on Little Triggers live from the Nashville Rooms December 1977 on Little Triggers that has only recently come to light !!!

"July, she will fly" is yet another Paul Simon lyric (from "April Come She Will").

Number 1: Whise Up Ghost and Other Songs
Number 2: Whise Up: Thought Remixes & Reworks
Number 3: a new EC & The Roots album with "love ballads", coming in July?

Today's Office. Editing heroes with heroes. #WWC
Notice the #WWC hashtag and the "High Fidelity" 12-inch single.

You may remember the "High Fidelity" 12-inch single from a video Questlove posted from this location in 2013. (Or maybe I'm the only one.)
