Elvis on Brexit ? I'm not sure if this is legit

Making art against the Right: Elvis Costello

POSTED ON NOVEMBER 17, 2016 BY TAKING SOUNDINGS

Carry On Up The Brexit

Roll over Napoleon, sod-off Adolf Caesar
You’re not grinning anymore Mona Lisa
Listen to the words of Mother Theresa
Brexit means Brexit

Shoot yourself in the foot, throw dust in your eye
Jump off a cliff, plucky Englishmen can fly
Smack yourself in the face with a custard pie
Brexit means Brexit

Flat-pack furniture without instructions
A vacuum-cleaner without any suction
Sherlock Holmes without deductions
Brexit means Brexit

Building sandcastles in the pissing rain
The people chose sandcastles – don’t complain
Bucket, spade, anorak – soak up the pain
Brexit means Brexit

Pull up the drawbridge, fortify the shores
Turn back the clock, lock all the doors
Spotted dick, scurvy, saloon bar bores
Brexit means Brexit

Give two fingers to the liberal elite
Make the cosmopolitan obsolete
Ignore expertise, idiocracy’s sweet
Brexit means Brexit

Repel the migrant armada, be prepared
Let their jungle burn, watch them running scared
Leave them all abandoned dans la merde
Brexshit means Brexshit

I'm intrigued as to why someone would (wrongly) attribute that to Elvis. His profile doesn't seem big enough for it to make sense to do such a thing.
I love you just as much as I hate your guts.

Strange, too, that they would post it without comment, as if being personally emailed an original song/poem by Elvis Costello didn't merit any special mention.

Perhaps they didn't recognize the name?

Has the ASCAP site anything new that could clear some questionmarks regarding this?

I completely agree with Verbal - it's the "Mother Theresa" crack which seals it for me. National Ransom Version No.10

It's not that surprising for someone famous to send out personal emails- after all, I regularly get one from a Nigerian general ! :D

So, has Neil 'been had' in thinking the lyric is ' purportedly' by Elvis ? Or 'been had' in thinking the lyric is by Elvis ?

If it is Elvis, then where is the Trump Regime piece to match it?

It's a win double for Neil. given that Elvis answered his question at the RFH book launch show as well.

I guess Elvis' response sorts out the afternoon conversation piece at the meet up next week...

...still, it might delay him before he bursts into inevitable song

So that was "our" Neil? Cool.

If we hear any more about this -- which I kind doubt we will -- I suspect it will turn out to be a misunderstanding rather than an intentional deception. As Mr. Getgood said, why pretend to be EC?

Meanwhile, I'll leave it to someone else to break it to sulky lad about those Russian lingerie models who keep wanting to be his friends on Facebook. :)

A little more on this at the original link:
[...]

By Elvis Costello — according to an email, 17.11.16.

And then we find that maybe it’s not THE Elvis Costello https://twitter.com/ElvisCostello/statu ... 2389152768

and then we receive this in another email (20.11.16):
Hi…
This parody lyric came to our attention and we hope you will not be too disappointed to hear that is most definitely not in Mr. Costello’s handwriting.

We believe it is the work of a former-Soviet mole or possibly the Seaford Mods.
http://www.takingsoundings.org.uk/makin ... -costello/
Many Thanks
Steve

We say: great poem/song, anyway!
Presumably the second email was from the original sender.

I do believe that 'Steve' may be the same diligent member of Elvis's management who is well known to the administrators of this forum !

The 'Seaford Mods' may be a reference to this outspoken duo - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleaford_Mods

Aw! Well, it's a great lyric - well done, Sleaford Mods! (or are they like Napoleon Dynamite? Another Elvis nom de plume?)

I cast my vote for Clive James as the instigator..........
