Via his site I asked Barry about these -

Hello John,

Thank you for your email

As he came out of a building after having done a live radio show I was there waiting for him.

As he walked from the door of the building to a waiting car provided by the record company here in Holland I asked if it would be OK to get a few pictures.

He first posed in front of the brick wall and then we went over to the trees

Nothing has been altered except for the shot with the darkened sunglasses and the colouring as you mentioned

It took place at a place called "The Farm" in Huizen Holland

Print costs depends on size and if you want it numbered and signed and where you want it shipped to.

Cheers

Barry

Barry's comment that Elvis was doing a radio show may be in error. Bussum, Holland was/is home to the Studio Concordia. Radio Veronica used to broadcast from there in the 1970s. The same studio was also home to a TV show called Countdown. Dutch fan Richard Groothuizen published a EC fanzine back then and noted anything Elvis was doing in Holland. His 1983 book So Far ( mostly English translation of the Dutch early editions of his ' ECIS' fanzine) has a two page account of a May 1979 appearance by Elvis & co. on the TV show. It suggests that Barry's photos come , therefore, from that month.

Some clips- This clip of WTD from that show does, of course, show Elvis in different clobber , but the glasses and hair ( shocking hint of mullet!) are similar -

The TV recording is also referred to in this article from the Leidse Courant newspaper in June 1979. The article is a review of a concert at De Flint, Amersfoort, Nederlands on 30 May 1979. It says:

"De mannen van VOO’s “Countdown” doen hun best om hem zo goed mogelijk te filmen voor een special programma dat morgenoavond op het scherm moet, op Ned. II om 20.32 uur."

or in English:

" "The men of VOO's" Countdown "do their best to shoot him as well as possible for a special program that tomorrow evening have on the screen, Ned. II at 20.32 hours."

Since EC's guitar does not yet say "Costello" on the neck and still has its original brown finish, these photos are likely some of the earliest taken of EC.

I think these Schultz photos must have been taken around the same time as the Anton Corbijn photo that graces the cover of UM&DI, as well as those "red vinyl room" photos that EC finds so creepy.

I'd bet the farm these are 1977 photos. He didn't dress like that in 1979.

Yes, 1977 does seem a more likely date , now that the detail of the guitar etc. is considered.

This appearance on tv in Sweden in September 1977 has Elvis with a similar look -

Of course that now means there's a radio show from that time that we didn't know about.

I asked Barry if he had any additional memories - he replied

'I was driving around and heard the show live on the radio and went directly to that location, if I remember it well. It was a very long time ago. But I believe that I got something really very special. He seemed to come out of the building alone. There were record company people about and probably management etc But I focused on him and only him The session probably only lasted a few moments. The motor of the waiting car was running.'

Barry also sent this -

Great reading about this period. It says on the wiki that an audience recording of the Countdown show exists. Has anyone ever found it?
Who on earth is tapping at the window?
