Elvis when you least expect it

Postby LessThanZero » Sun Jun 22, 2003 9:06 pm

Went to Catholic Mass with my Fiance today.
The choir was singing a song that sounded a LOT like Elvis' version of LOVE FOR SALE on Trust.
So it was in my head the whole service!
I almost laughed out loud when I realised a song called Love for SALE was stuck in my head during worship!

Does anyone else have any stories like that?

Elvis when you least expect it? I know what you mean...one day I was helping a friend shop for pants in a ultra-preppy store and 'new amsterdam' was playing in the store...someone that worked there must've been an EC fan (I treated my friend to a serenade :-) )

Just last week, I had a friend from university come visit, and I live near the Rockies so we took her to the mountains to do all the touristy stuff. Anyway we were staying in a small mountain town on a Monday night, not much to do but we made the best of it (with cases of beer :D )...so we stumbled out on the town, and as we were walking past a pub I hear GOON SQUAD! I made the girls stop and listen it...they thought I was crazy. It was very random. But I'm like "guys, it's GOON SQUAD!!"

I guess I just get suprised when I hear EC in public places like that rather than the usual clowd pleasing top 40 stuff!

My friend and I were driving somewhere and the radio station was some stupid pop radio station, and we have it turned down...almost off. My friend was in mid sentence when I say "Shut up, turn up the radio..." she was like 'Are you nuts?' and so she turns it up, and it was Spooky Girlfriend. It kinda made the rest of my night :P

NO DOUBT!

Like when you're getting dragged through the mall and you faintly hear "Real Love" by the Beatles playing...

and you suddenly realise there's something worth staying alive for, even though you want to throw yourself down an up escalator.

ok, that was a little off-sides. I apologize.
It's the last thing I want to do...pull the curtains on me and you...pull the carpet from under love...pull out like young lovers do...ewwwwwwww

YEAH WD!

I do that ALL the time...the radio will be turned way down, but I must have every beatles tune down to a subconscious level, because, I'll turn it up immediately when they come on.

Radio, Radio.... :?

WD, whereabouts do you drive anyway?

Here in Kalamazoo, Spooky Girlfriend would and will never ever get played on any radio station.

I don't know how it is everywhere else, but around here, country, pop, "alternative", rock, and easy listening all PLAY THE SAME FREAKING SONGS!!! and no song is an elvis song. why do i live here? :(

that would totally make my year if i heard a new elvis song come on the radio.... :)

Pennsylvania. I've only heard EC on our radio stations 3 times. Once they played Peace, Love, and Understanding when the war broke out, once when a classic rock station plays their music in alphebetical order they played Alison, and then in the car last month, Spooky Girlfriend was played for no real reason. :)

Haha. Yeah, PA is just great. With roads that have to twist and turn until you go crazy, and Amish towns placed randomly around the great state. But...I bet if the Amish had radios...they'd really love it when they heard their favorite song it  :)

You know what's really scary?

Hearing a Muzak version of "The Only Flame in Town" in the mall. I've heard it at least twice now. Elvis should NEVER be made into Muzak!!

How could they?

Postby A rope leash » Mon Jun 23, 2003 9:41 am

Yes, I've heard Elvis muzakked in elevators. Of course, it's always Alison, and never Hurry Down Doomsday.

How about when OTHER people get Elvisized unexpectedly? I can remember taking a long working trip with a Republican redneck from Fresno. Before I put in the Brutal Youth tape, I told him it was a little difficult, but that I would be enjoying it with or without his approval.

He only winced a little. He said you take the spring off the bottom of the snare drum to get that "ponk" sound.

Cool.

I remember a couple of years back watching some TV Doc about the regeneration of Liverpool docklands. I was mildly interested as some architect was being interviewed whilst driving. However, I really pricked up my ears when I heard the car stereo playing.....Stalin Malone!!

The loop from WIWC no.2 (y'know, the "Um" bit) began playing on some foodie programme I was watching a few months ago on the BBC. I think that was the same night I also heard Accidents on some other programme.

In a similar vein, I once saw a CD titled "Elvis' Dad Sings Elvis" which turned out to be MacManus Sr singing "Blue Suede Shoes" etc. It was going cheap (surprise surprise) and I was tempted - but I decided that that might be construed as taking this obsession too far!

O heck and hell I woulda bought it!

O yeah, on the Late Show, a Bif Henderson video skit opened up with the intro to "Clown Strike". It worked good.

Bunny: Nothing like a little shameless self-promotion there, huh? :)

Rope: I would have bought it too. I've never heard his dad sing. Is that what Suit of Lights was supposed to be about, his dad? That's what I had heard somewhere (incidentally, one of my all time favorite EC songs).

My weirdest EC when you least expect it was actually when my EC epiphany hit. I was in the middle of Home Depot and heard Alison. All my years of griping at my husband to cut those cds off came to a grinding halt that day. I don't know why, just glad they did.

A couple of weeks ago I heard "Radio Radio" as I was leaving the DC Improv after a performance. And when I worked at a department store I used to hear "Alison" occasionally. That was usually the bright spot of my day. The only time I ever heard Elvis on the radio is when I lived in IL, on WXRT.

They play "Pump It Up" at Fenway Park - late in the game, as things get tense. If the Sox win, they play "Dirty Water" (Standells version not the Inmates).

"Complicated Shadows" at the end of a Sopranos episode a couple of years ago.

Watching a documentary about the Great Fire of London I heard 'Come away death' in the background - very affecting!

Shouldn't this thread really be called "Cole When You Least Expect Him?"

Anyhow, I actually have a long list of these but by far the weirdest and least expected was hearing three or four EC songs -- and Squeeze's "Pulling Mussels from the Shell" at a Reno, Nevada casino about 18 months back.

I lost anyway.

Recent visit to our manufacturing facility in Brighton. Had purchased Get Happy extended play cd the day prior on Oxford Street in London, with Richard Thompsons new one. Was excited because Get Happy CD is difficult to get in the states, and I owned only the original vinyl.

As I chatted with our Brighton company representatives in the beautiful Old Ship Hotel, the radio station in the bar spun "Opportunity", an incredible coincidence as I had just finished my very subjective but balanced review of the Costello portfolio, rating Get Happy as having achieved equal ranking (with Imperial Bedroom) as my all time favorite Costello album.

Timing is everything.

By the way, artist sequence was Costello, followed by Kate Bush, followed by New Order...commercial break. If I can find a station like that in southern California...
