“ The Falls” by Ian Rankin, page 188:

Claverhouse was silent for a moment. This cheers me immensely, he said . Right, the person you want to speak to is Declan Macmanus.”

Rebus frowned. “Wasn’t that Elvis Costello’s real name?”

“Well. He obviously passed it on to someone in need”

PS I'd recommend the rest of the book too

I'm having lunch at Noodles & Co. and Beyond Belief is playing over the sound system.

British comedienne Lucy Porter is a Costello fan. Saw her at my local Arts Centre last night and even though Morrissey was her first love, Costello seems to be her main man right now. Lovely lady too.

Some mentioned in the beginning of this thread thinking that they hear Elvis Costello in church. I hear Elvis whenever I think of church! Some of his songs would go perfectly worked into the crucifixion story. I'm rewriting Man Out of Time with scripture, and in Wise Up Ghost, Come the Meantimes is the perfect thing for Jesus to be singing to the apostles. Would anyone be interested in hearing the details of my writing? Elvis music on Sundays would make the world a greater place.

Top of the Tops 2 Christmas 2013 broadcast on 22 December featured the Specials performing Nelson Mandela. The captions they show during the song refer to Elvis Costello as producer.

For years I thought Elvis did the backing vocals on the chorus and the outro. But i think now its Stan Campbell. (might have his name wrong). I think I thought that because I saw Elvis singing with the Specials at the time. Probably on The Tube

'Tripwire' in a hotel bar in Greenford.

Tripwire?! Somebody put it on the bar's mix tape. How on earth did anyone know the song existed?!

Neil. - given your penchant for a beer, are you sure it wasn't "I trip through your wire" by U2 or something else. I know what you're like...

Come off it, Sulky - we were dancing on air, I thought!

Verbal, yes, there was of course beer involved. But I wasn't hearing things! A 'Wise Up Ghost track'! In a hotel bar! And now Jackson Monk's heard another track in the bogs!

Maybe the album has cut through more than we realise...

Talking of "Red Shoes", this from the Londoner's Diary column in today's London Evening Standard:

"QUITE the dandiest, finest sight at Westminster yesterday was the BBC's Robert Peston, striding across College Green - where all the broadcasting is done on Budget Day - in an amazing pair of red suede shoes. Peston claims he wears them as a reference to the Elvis Costello song (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes. Scoopmeister Peston is son of a Labour peer. What other colour did you expect?"

In this weeks episode of BBC's legal drama Silk (one of the main characters is called Martha Costello):

What name was the room booked in? Costello, no first name just an initial E.

Defence barrister - a singer from the 1980s

Judge - a good year for the roses

Defence barrister - not so good for ship building
