The Undertones were supposed to support Elvis in Macroom in 1981. The Pretenders pulled out of the festival because of recording commitments so the 'tones got moved to the Sunday night.

The 'Tones are doing a 40th anniversary tour, I'm going to see them in Belfast in May. Not quite the same without Feargal. BTW, they credit EC for advising them to use Roger Bechirian as a producer, he (EC) met them at a TOTP recording late 78.

John, a serious question, how far is the gig from the airport as I would love to try and make the gig although it is a distinct pipe-dream and I'm trying to work out the possible logistics?

Knock airport claims to be an hour and half from Galway. I've never flown there so have no direct experience. Similarly I do not drive so cannot comment on the driving conditions. The intercity motorway from Dublin to Galway has improved a lot in the last decade so Dublin airport is also a option . What used to be a day long journey can now be done in about three hours. The buses & trains to & from there are very regular. I hope that helps.

I flew into Knock a couple of weeks ago, it's pretty remote, I have no idea how you'd get out of there without a car. I imagine Dublin is an easier option unless you want to rent a car at Knock.

As a driver, I find Dublin-Galway far more convenient than Knock or Shannon, due to a combination of flight frequency, traffic consistency (3 hours to/from Dublin is 3 hours to/from Dublin; 90 minutes to/from Knock is 90-180 minutes to/from Knock) and the Tullamore Dew Distillery in Offaly....

Brendan Duffy , who reviewed the 1984 Galway show -

http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... er_4,_1984

............... has noticed that the review is up on wiki.

Now going by his Irish name , Breandán Ó Dubthaigh , he posted on f/book-

It's been 32 years since Mr. Costello came to play in Galway. Back then he got a write-up in the local paper from some journalism school dropout...

I commented -

The Pogues supported that night but you don't mention them. Subsequent accounts say they had to play with instruments borrowed from the Attractions because their own had gone astray after the show the night before in Belfast. As regards Elvis's show , Elvis said in a interview with Tom Dunne on Newstalk a few weeks ago that he remembered the Galway '84 show because his keyboardist, Steve Nieve, fell off the stage at one point. Does that ring any bells with you ?

He replied -

I missed the Pogues myself that night. I don't remember Steve Nieve falling off stage but I do recall that towards the end of the night Pete Thomas kept throwing drumsticks at him, which he caught deftly (and on the beat) every time! Nieve was introduced on stage as "Maurice Worm" (which was also how he was credited on the Goodbye Cruel World album).

Got to have been one of the best gigs I was ever at; apart from EC's own obvious brilliance the Attractions were an amazing live band in their own right. After the gig some friends & I were having a post-mortem drink in the old Banba Hotel, Costello and the band came in but couldn't get served because they were "underage" (mar dhea).

Preview in the Galway Independent: on 1 March 2016:

"Elvis Costello to make Galway International Arts Festival debut

Galway International Arts Festival have announced that music legend Elvis Costello and The Imposters will make their Festival debut Live at the Absolut Festival Big Top on Friday 15 July.

A true songwriting legend, Elvis Costello has followed his musical curiosity for more than 35 years. Since his debut hit ‘Watching the Detectives’ in 1977, he has amassed a music catalogue of 30 studio albums and 42 Top 100 singles.

He is perhaps best known for his performances with The Attractions and The Imposters. However he has also collaborated with many of the world’s musical talents including Burt Bacharach, Paul McCartney, record producer and songwriter T Bone Burnett and the Roots.

During his career, Costello has received several prestigious honours, including two Ivor Novello Awards, a BAFTA, a Grammy and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Costello will be joined at the Absolut Festival Big Top by The Imposters for what promises to be a spectacular live performance. With Steve Nieve on keyboard and Pete Thomas on drums, The Imposters are sure to add an irreverent energy to the gig.

Special guests on the night will be The Undertones.

Elvis Costello and The Imposters will play the Absolut Festival Big Top on Friday 15 July. Tickets are priced at €49.50 and go on sale at giaf.ie and roisindubh.net on Friday 4 March at 9am. "

Watch out for that "irreverent energy".

For the Big Top concerts, The Gloaming's concert is sold out, but Mr Crumlish is also recommending the concert by Elvis Costello. "He'll be joined by most of The Attractions and support is from the Undertones, it's going to be a night of hits."

Heading for the early train back to Dublin. Excellent festival show, Elvis in good voice & the Imposters on top form. I'll post more when I'm at 'work' later.
