Preview by Steve Carpenter in the Coventry Observer from February 29, 2016:

"Elvis Costello to kick-start solo tour in Coventry

POPULAR singer and songwriter Elvis Costello will kick-start his acclaimed Detour solo show in Coventry this summer.

The cult musician revisits his back catalogue in this forthcoming tour which begins at Warwick Arts Centre on May 9 and includes four other dates at London’s Palladium.

For nearly four decades, the man born Declan MacManus has been behind some rock and pop’s most enduring songs, including Oliver’s Army, Accidents Will Happen, I Can’t Stand Up for Falling Down, Watching the Detectives, Pump It Up, I Don’t Want to Go to Chelsea and Alison.

And critics from around the globe have waxed lyrical about this incredibly entertaining walk through Costello’s amazing life and back catalogue.

In this nostalgic and joyous tour, Costello revisits his back catalogue as well as performing covers by Brinsley Schwarz, Cliff Edwards, Charles Aznavour and Sam and Dave.

Costello was raised in London and Liverpool became a world-famous star by the age of 24. His performances have taken him from a cardboard guitar in his front room to fronting a rock and roll band and performing in the world’s greatest concert halls in a wild variety of company.

He continues to add to one of the most intriguing and extensive songbooks of the day and he has collaborated with the likes of The Attractions, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint and The Roots, as well has having written songs for George Jones, Chet Baker, Solomon Burke and Johnny Cash."

The author seems to have seen the same press release as the Coventry Telegraph (unsurprisingly). Hope those of you at the show tonight feel suitably "nostalgic and joyous".

I'm just curious: did he play any of the "A Face In The Crowd" songs?
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

VG - You're wondering now was for John Bradbury, the Specials drummer, who died recently. Pictured on screen after Dan Hicks.

Larkin Poe were on at 8 and Elvis 8.50 to 11.20
Is that so surprising nowadays?

Too tired to comment right now except to say this show well exceeded my expectations. I was preparing to make allowances for Elvis having jetlag & doing a safe, predictable show , a warm up for the big shows in London. Not at all - new songs , subtle variations on old favourites and so on.

The presentation of the new songs , clearly commentary on the Trump situation , is now being described as something he is working on 'with some friends'. On just one listen they are melodic, well composed tunes. Elvis's overt presentation of the project makes me think that it may well being developing in to just that - A Project. I can't help thinking of the impetus behind Pills & Soap , the rush to release it to try , in vain, to influence the election that year in the U.K. . Maybe a similar mindset may be in play here. Elvis seems to be engaging in projects at such short notice of late that I wouldn't be at all surprised if something on these lines is underway. Just a hunch...

I agree that it was an extremely good show.
Great to hear a lot of new songs - hopefully something new is happening soon.
Seems the bald head is now more acceptable and the constant hat-wearing out! Shades also back in.
Seemed very relaxed and the audience was good.
Just have to accept having heard the jokes before.....
I like the odd cover version in the set but I do feel that a few more obscure EC back-catalogue songs would be better than songs from 1962 that none of us know. Basically I hate bloody She.....
Here are a few alternative suggestions:
You'll never be a man
Tears before bedtime
No hiding place
Lovable
It's starting to come to me
Bullets for the newborn king
We'll see what sort of variety happens at the Palladium - there on Friday

I also thoroughly enjoyed my fourth Detour show but why oh why does the great man inflict " She " on us. It's passable on record and works well in the film " Notting a Hill " but such a dirge as an acoustic piece. But what do I know? It received the biggest cheer on the night after " Oliver's Army " BTW, I grabbed a copy of the set list after the show and note that he passed on the following... She's Pulling Out The Pin, I Want You, Beyond Belief, Everyday... , Blame It On Cain, Man Out Of Time...

He did, but on the other hand we did get 'Lipstick Vogue', 'I Can't Turn It Off', 'Love Field' and 'Clown Strike', none of which have been regulars on Detour. You can't have everything!
