YEP.

An interesting sequence-- there are some nice thematic juxtapositions in there, and in some ways this is as good a career overview as one could squeeze onto two discs.

It's nice that April 5th has finally found its way onto an official release (it is talked about in the book as part of a still-unfinished album) and one genuine rarity.

I wonder if 1. Veronica [demo] has previously seen the light of day?

Connor, you can't feel too bad -- he included your (obscure) favorite song. Meaning it's an important one for him, too. I think this qualifies as a weird compilation of previously released material, but not in a bad way.

The "audio book sketches not included in the book" make it sound like he couldn't stop writing once he got started, like you sort of said.

It was on the "So Like Candy" CD single in 1991 and the Rhino reissue of Spike in 2001.

Absolutely FASCINATING to have a 2-disc Costello collection in which TYM gets zero tracks!

Not a complaint, just an observation, given that that is typically one of the most-loved of all EC albums, and had a pretty solid showing on Girls +£÷ Girls =$& Girls.

I'm delighted that My Dark Life made the cut, and that MLAR got TWO.

Nothing from Get Happy!! either except later bonus track Ghost Train. Funny he would include that and resist including something from GH!! proper. A bit of youtube digging however reveals that it has some significance for him related to his dad... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOYV0kQY6w

edit- oops, I see Riot Act was included.

Universal Music Canada's info sheet says "Accidents Will Happen" is a live version (maybe from Hollywood High?) and doesn't say anything about "Veronica" being a demo.

I'm with BA here, won't be shelling out for this album until it's on eBay for £3 (+ postage). Did We really expect it to be chock full of rarities - sigh it's not 1978 now; witness the lack of any of TYM . :?

Oof! No Pump It Up, at least, from TYM, is a shocker! And I think it's a shame that the studio version of 'Accidents' has been elbowed out - the live version doesn't do it justice. Also, two long, slow sinister songs in a row - I Want You and WIWC2 - might test some people's patience. But still - obviously almost all of these are fantastic, so it doesn't really matter! Nice to see 'I'm In The Mood Again' getting some attention. Love that song!

Elvis Costello Creates Soundtrack Album to His Memoir Including Two Unreleased Tracks

Elvis Costello has compiled a 38-track, 2-CD set 'Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album' (UMe, October 9th) as a companion to his memoir "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink" (Blue Rider Press/Penguin Random House, October 13th).

Costello has chosen songs that offer the deepest emotional connection to the themes and stories in his book. The set includes both hits and rarities including two previously-unreleased titles: "April 5th" - written and recorded with Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson and John Leventhal - and one of Costello's earliest solo recordings, "I Can't Turn It Off," from 1975.

The collection also features three exclusive "audio book sketches" - that do not appear in the published memoir - and a 28-page booklet providing the complete lyrics and many unseen photographs, several of them from the MacManus family album.

Considering that I've never seen physical evidence of the Pomp & Pout set anywhere, maybe -- just maybe -- I'll spring for this. If it's under $20. And I have the cash.

Hear Elvis Costello's Moving Song With Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson

Elvis Costello will release his autobiography, Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink, on October 13th, and he has assembled a two-disc, 38-song companion album, featuring tracks that relate to the themes and stories of the book. The Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album track list includes Costello hits, collaborations and rarities, including "April 5th," an unreleased track from the rocker's supergroup with Kris Kristofferson and Rosanne Cash.

The three legends trade verses on the tender acoustic track, with Costello singing, "You want imagination/But you cannot pretend/You need air/But you won't even break a window." Written by the trio along with Cash's husband, John Leventhal, "April 5th" premiered when Costello, Cash and Kristofferson performed the song together on Costello's Spectacle series. The trio considered the title "Faith and Free Will" before settling on "April 5th," the day of the 2008 recording session when this take was laid down, as Cash revealed in a New York Times op-ed.

"A few years ago, Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, and I formed our supergroup, C.C.K. — which sounds like a former Soviet republic — or K.C.C., which might be a knock-off of a fast food chain. We wrote and recorded a couple of songs for a still unfinished album," Costello told Rolling Stone.

"One of them, 'April 5th,' was written with and produced by Rose's husband, John Leventhal and is as good as any song on which my name is signed. It took the company of two of the greatest lyric writers I know for me to resist the temptation to adopt a disguise and to finally speak out loud."

While "April 5th" was uploaded onto Cash's SoundCloud page two years ago, Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album marks the first time the track will officially be released. The companion LP will also feature "I Can't Turn It Off," an early recording that Costello — as D.P. Costello — recorded in 1975, two years before his debut, My Aim Is True.

Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack Album, which is available to pre-order now, arrives October 9th, four days before Costello's memoir hits shelves.

The delay seems to apply only to the CD release. The download version is available today.

Oddly, both links say "April 5th" is "Live From Spectacle", and iTunes says it features Norah Jones and John Mellencamp in addition to Cash and Kristofferson. All those people did appear on that Spectacle episode, but Jones and Mellencamp did not participate in the "April 5th" performance, and the sound clip is clearly the studio recording.

There is a photo in the new CD booklet( with this album) , early eighties, never seen by anyone but EC and myself. Always said one day we would find a use for it. We call it the Haircut 100 photo.

The version that I pre-ordered has all of otherwise not-on-sale 1st-last timers, including the 2 this year from Cardiff and from Carlisle.

Plus 'The Edge Of Ugly' etc.
'Sometimes via the senses, mostly in the mind (or pocket)'.
