Another gap filler for the 'Dan tour. Listed on Elvis's site and the venue's main page but not on the site's gig listing.

Crowd wants more of Costello, and he obliges
Bruce Miller

SIOUX CITY -- If you were looking for a master class in rock, you should have been at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Friday night.

Elvis was outside the building, eager to help you get schooled.

Rolling through five songs in less than 15 minutes, the Grammy-winning Elvis Costello rocked decades of hits, stopping long enough to tell one story, break up a classroom scuffle and grab one of what must have been a dozen different guitars.

Shortly into “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” Costello’s students rose and didn’t sit down until he made a brief foray into ballad territory.

The scuffle? It came during “Every Day I Write the Book.” Like Miranda Lambert at the Tyson Events Center several years ago, he offered an ultimatum: “You’ve got two choices. You can stand down or we stop playing.” The crowd roared, Elvis got the clapping started and the self-appointed rock cop got the class in line. His secret teaching tool: a call-and-response sing-along that worked quite well at quelling.

While “Alison” seemed to be the favorite (it took audience participation to another level), it certainly wasn’t his only writing triumph.

Costello, in fact, is such a sharp lyricist his songs bear close attention.

Thankfully, Battery Park’s sound system was quite good, enabling some of those nuanced parts of oh-so-fast songs to shine through.

Now 60, Costello was great on “Radio Radio” and “Watching the Detectives.” His guitar ability emerged repeatedly, justifying the Hard Rock hallway of instruments lined up behind him.

Songs like “Accidents Will Happen” showed his drive; “Flutter and Wow” demonstrated his range.

During that one “talking” break, Costello said he had planned to come to Sioux City in 1978 but got sidetracked in Tucson, Ariz. That led to “Accidents Will Happen” and a chance to show just how fun he can be.

Dressed in black (wrong for a hot Iowa night), a straw hat and shades (just right for the occasion), he was pretty much all business, not unlike an educator prepping his students for a final.

Performing for 90 minutes (without an opening act), Costello still had magnificent range (as demonstrated on “Alison”) and a determination that’s rare to find in a veteran act not named Springsteen.

His band, the Imposters, provided excellent support even though it didn’t offer one of those breaks where he could disappear for 10 minutes. They followed his lead and never slowed until it was time for the encore. Then, it was just a matter of cramming in as much as possible before class was dismissed.

Edit - just edited out 'Mouth Almighty' after rechecking the original message - my mistake, sorry. It was , indeed , a sign off tag from a two part message.

I'm assuming they didn't end with Mouth Almighty and that's Mouth Almighty signing off the message.

I'm a little suspicious of both "Mouth Almightys" on the setlist until we get clarification.

Hey, I'm "Mouth Almighty" from Twitter. I sent in the setlist.

I've never posted to the forum before, but wanted to tell you a little more about the odd evening we had in Sioux City. Thanks to all of you who do post here as it's an amazing source of information. I really appreciate all that you folks do as I lurk in the shadows.

When the band started "Everyday I Write the Book," Elvis motioned for the folks in the back of the venue to move forward. The folks from General Admission started moving toward the stage. We were in the front row, so at that point we left our seats and moved toward the stage barricade. It seemed pretty orderly, but evidently cops and security personal started swarming the folks from GA and at that point EC stopped singing and told the police officers they had two choices: Let the people dance near the stage or he would end the show. His stage manager and another crew member talked to the cops while the band vamped on the song. It appeared they had come to an agreement, and the show resumed. I chatted with some folks after the show who said the officers were physically pushing folks back. I can't confirm this as I couldn't see that side of the stage from my vantage point.

I did find a short video on Twitter. This was recorded after EC gave the cops and on-mic ultimatum:

As you can see, the crowd looks TOTALLY out of control, right? ;)

From this point forward the mood was tense and the show ended after 90 minutes (probably about 30 minutes after the altercation).

I'm a performing musician and I completely understand the urge to GTFO when a gig starts to feel strange. Too bad the Sioux City police force had to react the way they did. We drove 6 hours from Columbia, Missouri for this show and were hoping for a bit more music.

I did win big at the Hard Rock Casino, so all was not lost. Managed to pay for my trip with a fluke keno jackpot...so I got that going for me.

One interesting thing to note is that the Hard Rock Hotel Sioux City seems to consistently post "post-concert" rave-ups and photographs after an event. There has been nothing on their Facebook or Twitter following this show.

What was one of the best shows at Hard Rock this year? (Anthem or Battery Park)

Streeter: This is hard to pin down only one show. For me personally I would have to group in a couple. Slash in Anthem, 3 Doors Down & Seether at Battery Park, Elvis Costello at Battery Park and probably George Thorogood in September.

What was great about these shows? What exactly made them memorable or the most successful?

It was great to see Slash play a size room like Anthem. My middle school years were ruled by [Guns N' Roses] albums. The ability to get Slash in a room the size of Anthem and feel the energy in the room that night was something pretty remarkable.

The 3 Doors Down and Seether [show] was picked because it was the very first show in Battery Park. The process of creating and designing Battery Park was extremely exciting, but at the same time immensely stressful. However, on July 11, the first notes were played on the Battery stage. Witnessing something our teamed worked so hard to create come to fruition is something very few people in this industry are able to do.

Elvis Costello. I mean its Elvis Costello. Rock n Roll Hall of Famer, one of the 100 greatest artists of all time, a renowned songwriter who has penned songs with people like Paul McCartney. Having Elvis perform in Sioux City during the first year of Battery Park was pretty outstanding.(...)
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.
