Steve Nieve tours Australia Sept 2014

Post by TombowlerTours »

Tour info: http://www.tombowler.com.au/steve-nieve/

Hello Elvis Costello fans!

Steve Nieve has been playing keyboards for Elvis Costello for more than thirty years, firstly as a member of The Attractions, and in more recent times with The Imposters. Steve also has worked on Costello’s solo albums and alongside Elvis and Burt Bacharach as part of the Painted From Memory album and tour.

Perhaps the most intimate performances, however, were those where Elvis and Steve toured together creating a spellbinding tour-de-force of piano, guitar and voice. Anybody who has witnessed these or indeed any of Elvis Costello’s live shows will appreciate the special magic that occurs when Steve Nieve is let loose to solo on the piano.

Now, finally, Australia will get to experience a full evening of this magic as Steve and his piano take centre stage.

Steve Nieve was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 as a member of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

He has performed on stage or recorded with such greats including- Sting, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Madness, Squeeze, Burt Bacharach, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Morrissey, Lou Reed, Annie Clark (St. Vincent), Vanessa Paradis, Robert Wyatt, Francois Hardy, Jane Birkin, Sandy Shaw, Allen Toussaint, Paul Weller, Kirsty Maccoll, Mick Jagger, Smokey Robinson, Barbara Bonney, Laurie Anderson and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He has released eight solo albums since 1983. His most recent, critically acclaimed, ToGetHer features duets with Elvis Costello, Sting, Ron Sexsmith, Joe Sumner, Muriel Teddori, Glenn Tilbrook, Tall Ulyss, Vanessa Paradis, and Laurie Anderson.

His Australian shows will feature a set list covering his entire career with Elvis Costello and solo albums.

If you have any Australian friends who would be interested in this show, please feel free to help spread the word! It will be an amazing night for fans of Steve and Elvis' alike! http://www.tombowler.com.au/steve-nieve/

It's kind of pointless without Elvis singing.

i agree bamboo in that i would MUCH prefer him performing his OWN music. he has released several fantastic records including the most recent ToGetHer. i'm hoping in New York City, we get more than just the music of EC...especially with Tall Ulysses on the bill.

I agree BA, he could half the price and not so obviously ride on EC's coattails. Anyone who knows him knows him and would enjoy whatever assorted tinkering he plays. But I'll save my money and see Bob Dylan next month at... the Opera House!

Steve Nieve Plays Elvis Costello Drills Into The Heart Of The Song

Elvis Costello keyboard player Steve Nieve is in Australia performing the songs of Elvis Costello in their most stripped down form ever.

Nieve is touring the country playing instrumental piano version of Costello classics and taking the music of Elvis to its rawest level ever.

“People think of Elvis as a lyricist and I wanted to show the beauty of the melody within the songs to the fans,” Nieve told Noise11.

Steve Nieve also tells stories about his time with Elvis over the past 35 years. With the exception of a period in the late 80s, early 90s, Steve Nieve has played on nearly every Costello album including the collaborations with Allen Toussaint and Burt Bacharach.

Steve Nieve setlist:
Muriel on Main Beach
Shipbuilding
The Birds Will Be Singing
I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea
Almost Blue
Veronica
Accidents Will Happen
Veronica
God Give Me Strength
Loved Ones
Confident
Long Honeymoon
Temptation
Shot With His Own Gun
Alison
Oliver’s Army
Welcome To The Working Week
What’s So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding

Steve Nieve remaining tour dates
September 17, Perth, Fly By Night Fremantle
September 19, Melbourne, Melbourne Recital Centre

I'm not entirely sure what the setlist in that article is supposed to be (and he's obviously not going to play Veronica twice), but this is what he actually played in Sydney - I think this is the correct order, it's certainly all the actual songs:

Muriel on Main Beach
Shipbuilding
Accidents Will Happen
Veronica
The Birds Will Still Be Singing
God Give Me Strength
The Loved Ones
Confident Again (he sings this)
The Long Honeymoon
Green Shirt/PLU (improvised with vocals)
Shot With His Own Gun
Welcome To The Voice
Alison
Olivers Army

Encore:
"Audience Challenge" (play something using the notes G D F# Eb Bb)
"EC challenge" (play something using the notes DDFEC (Diana, Dexter, Frank and Elvis Costello)

So he asked the audience to call out 5 notes and then he improvised around them. Then he said the EC had suggested a version of it too, hence the second piece.

PLU was as the result of someone in the audience having a bit of a meltdown when one of Steve's stories happened to mention a groupie in a humorous context. The audience member, who was eventually escorted out, decided to object strenuously to the story, much to everyone else's annoyance. Steve just improvised PLU, singing along quietly...

Elvis Costello's piano man Steve Nieve pitch perfect

Steve Nieve Plays Elvis Costello
3 STARS
Recital Centre, September 19
Reviewed by Michael Dwyer

Elvis Costello got lucky when Steve Nieve answered his ad in Melody Maker. The Royal College of Music keyboard wiz had never touched a Hammond organ before, so he pulled out the stops to impress. Then he cunningly pushed them back in again before the next guy auditioned. In skinny jeans, gold waistcoat and expensive shoes, he told that story over a sumptuous Steinway grand on this occasion: an evolution that paralleled his long-time employer's subsequent elevation to the ranks of the great pop classicists.

Actually, he had a funny story about Steinways, too. And once again, his bespectacled friend Declan was the hero.

His natural modesty has often failed to eclipse Nieve's stunning gifts as an instrumentalist. But in a solo concert piano setting, with the likes of Alison and Watching the Detectives extrapolated to points previously unimagined, the degree of his restraint these past 35 years became clear.

Shipbuilding was previewed in its sad, familiar grandeur before he stopped to tell the tale of its construction, then returned to pull it inside out with only those relentlessly descending chords anchoring its original desolation.

Burt Bacharach's trademark cadences in This House Is Empty Now were honoured, too, albeit under a larger chandelier, though the witty segue into Accidents Will Happen was almost unfathomable.

Nieve's conversational pitch and virtuosic technique drew laughs, gasps and a standing ovation from the tiny audience. But as befits a loyal accompanist, the astoundingly elaborate likes of Long Honeymoon and Shot With His Own Gun were as remarkable for Costello's composition as his own boundless perspectives.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.
