Word docs

Post by edney »

Hi

Does anyone of a technical nature know the easiest way of getting Word documents to be shared over the net, or indeed on this forum? I have a "project" that I've been working on since I don't know when that I would like to share with you guys but I'm not sure the best way to go about doing so.

What is it I hear you say? It's a fairly extensive Word document version of the Costello Wiki. Sort Of.

Thanks

Have you tried Google Docs? - https://docs.google.com/

Hi Azmuda

I have tried Google Docs. The problem is that it buggers up the formatting of the original document. Also, there are a lot of hyperlinks attached to the documents in question that cannot be included with the original.

Convert the word doc into HTML:

http://www.zamzar.com/convert/doc-to-html/#tool

or

http://word2cleanhtml.com/

Then create a free web page or blog to publish it:

http://www.wix.com

OR

http://www.weebly.com

OR

http://www.webs.com/

Did you check out office365.com? Microsoft's version of GoogleDocs?

What about DropBox or Box.com - Just upload the file and share the file for download?

Or you could post the material to the Wiki (hyperlinks and all).

It seems to work for the Pope - The Pope of Pop's EC Biography on the wiki

I may have to give up the ghost on this one. Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive etc will not allow me to save Hyperlinks...... I may have a copywright issue with putting this stuff onto a blog and the problem with transferring to the Wiki is that it's too unwieldy as it includes photos and other bits and bobs.

Why is this so difficult?

The easiest option would be to put it on a USB stick and post it to everyone!!!

Well, that is an option. I'm curious as to what you have to offer.

As for copyright issues with a blog, the easiest thing to do (other than not posting it) would be to add a disclaimer saying you don't own the photos and if the owner wants them removed, you will. Beyond that, a Word document with unembedded links should transfer via any of the outlets you mention.

Or, just pass the doc to someone on the board - John Foyle or wiki board operator and they can deal with it and post any new info to wiki here?

OK....an update. I've discovered that Microsoft OneDrive isn't too bad. At least you can transfer documents without losing the original formatting. It still doesn't deal with hyperlinks but there is a solution to that. Delete them and then incorporate the text that you would have linked to into the main body of the document.

Does anyone fancy being my guinea pig? Send me your e-mail address and I will send you a link to "EC STORY1954-1976", the only doc thus far that I've uploaded into my OneDrive account.

If anyone would prefer to PM me with their details I can hopefully get the link set up for you.

Cheers

Perhaps save as PDF's to make them smaller and more manageable, then upload as others mention above?

Saving as PDF's not only deletes the Hyperlink but it also dispenses with Comments too and there are a fair few of those in the documents in question. Thanks anyway for the suggestions.

An update........there is no update.

I'm still waiting for a response from wardo64 (are you out there?) who has either not received my recent message or is not responding to it.
I would really like some feedback on this as I am still willing to share these word documents with anyone who wants them.

Sorry about that -- life got in the way. (I hate when that happens...) I shall make it a priority to give you some feedback this week.

That's OK.

I have tried sending you PM's but I'm not sure if they are getting through to you or not. Oh yes, and I've sold you short. It's Wardo68 not 64!
