COMPLETED! who thinks EC has performed 1500 different live?

Post by bronxapostle »

if at this thread: http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3 ... =2&t=10091 i have what i have seen LIVE at 673 different (YES, I COUNT SONG FRAGMENTS & MARKEDLY re-arranged takes on songs!) who thinks i can make a list of another 827 that i NEVER did see? I DO or at least i bet it would be real close to that number. i always need a list making hobby when i have no shows on the horizon. what do YOU say? LET US BEGIN...with 1975:

Re: a poll: who thinks EC has sang 1500 different songs live

Post by FAVEHOUR »

I don't think it could be that high! I went through your list the other night and found 78 things I have never seen. Then I can add 121 to your list, that I have seen that weren't on your list, so that puts the total up to what, 794? I don't think you can double that. 1100 maybe?

cool numbers Dave! thanks for sharing. without even trying REALLY hard, i have a piece of paper with 200 songs on it already. i would STILL bet if i start at the wiki discography from the beginning till now that i CAN get to 1400 easily and 1500 possibly. the only easy way for me to approach that task would be to chronicle, again from the beginning till present day at the wiki, each song he has performed NOT already upon my list. it surely would be the easiest approach for me rather than trying to do it all again inclusive of the songs i have already spent years compiling. let me sleep on it and see what i can do to get this done. i got my own curiosity going now, which always inspires me. HEY grammar folks: is that BRONX BENNY talk in the title of this thread (SANG?) or should it be SUNG??? statistician ba is NO Rhodes scholar!   in fact, maybe i will change it to 'performed' as there are a small handful that he does NOT sing upon. as far as my guess, you must remember Dave: Spectacle, singing with The Pogues, Von Otter, Black & White Night, Rosanne "Numbers" show and dozens of other oddball appearances. 1500 looks very likely i am thinking.

challenge accepted! SEE POST ONE FOR THE LIST! will do this slowly for accuracy sake. it's late, first show listed: 1975 FLIP CITY. g'night.
YOU SEE MY PROBLEM, ONCE I START, CAN'T STOP! okay, so i gave it another ten minutes and added the others i have not seen played through the end of 1977. let's see how far i get tomorrow.
not to make a bunch of additional posts here, i will just edit this one as well as post one! just added songs to end of 1978 shows now.
OKAY COMPLETED TO END OF 1979....here come the 80's!
1980 added; 1981 on the way.
completed 1981.the glorious New Years Eve ALMOST BLUE, ALMOST 82 NYC show! 76 listed above so far.
1982 added, which brings us to the question. if it is just Steve doing the fragment (e.g. A SUMMER PLACE or PINK PANTHER themes), i had never put these into my setlist of songs played. if this is how DANCE TO THE MUSIC or POPCORN were played, please let me know. or let us discuss it here please. yours truly, OCD ba
1983 is done...(YIKES! can anyone loan me a spare pair of eyes?) which i think gets us to 97 more than are on my list. can't trust my eyes counting right now however. when i get to 100, i will label each 100 as such to save me counting dozens of times.
a large bunch added for the year 1984 just now...we are at 128 here!
another big number (23) added for 1985. ya GOTTA be rethinking my 1500 guess now Dave....looking like a LOCK!
1986, my first SIX show year, is now added! i hope i get some BRAVE BROTHERS a month from today in NYC!
just added 1987, the horrible time EC toured SOLO as close as Piscataway, NJ and i never learned about it until the internet boom.
also did the "vacation" year from the stage for E of 1988! only added 3 songs w/ Chrissie Hynde on 2-20-88. almost done with the 80's.
the 1980's are a wrap and listed above. we are at 252 additional performances added to the BAseline.
and 1990 is added & it's WORLD RECORD for LEAST Elvis stage appearances in a year: ONE! Neil Young Bridge School benefit.
1991 only adds NINE & 1992 a VERY quiet year with NONE added. and 1993 adds three more. but, i predict BIG numbers from 1994-2014
wow...kinda surprised 1994 only adds seven. means i need to add over 550 in the ensuing 20 years! let's see....
alright! 1995 adds another dozen. only nineteen more years for me to chronicle.
now added are both 1996 and 1997 which gets us to a total here of 309. lots of work to be done still. have i been at this a week yet?
1998 is up now. AND now while doing 1999, i stumbled across I SHALL BE RELEASED. thank God for the verification check i always make by clicking on the link to each song title to be certain the song hadn't appeared sooner. Lo and Behold ( ) on this one, i had to go back and edit it in after "ONE AFTER 909." i had missed his guest appearance tacked on at the bottom of the wiki page for that first performance date joining Bob which i should have recalled. PLEASE FOLKS, your eyes AND assistance are welcomed always here. current CORRECT total is 314. alrighty...1999 now added: so the decade ends (until further review) with 324 that are NOT on my initial list. stay tuned all.
only added one for the year 2000...U2's PLEASE.
2001 now in the books up above. it added a nice number of 24 to our list.
first year of THE IMPOSTERS (2002) adds six to our list...we are at 355 with a dozen calendar years to go.
2003 gave me a tough time, but it is done. only adds eight bringing us to 363.
2004 archived above now adding eight bringing us to 371 with ten full years to go. and i do indeed mean FULL years. watch the number grow.
at last, 2005 adds NINETEEN bringing us up to 390 more added to the BAseline!
another 2005 edit....had to yank ROUTE 66 as it appears WAY at the top of this list. found that on my own, but please feel free to be a proofreader and help me and the cause any old time. total amended to 389.
and we are back up to 390 as i added "PEOPLE" from 6-20-1985 as per ANCT advisement!
http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... -20_Sydney
2006 now archived above adding 34 tracks bringing us up to 424 on this list....eight BIG years to go.
finally typed in here the year 2007 and its thirty five additions, bringing us up to 459. this could get interesting!
39 more for the year 2008 brings us up to 498....SIX more years to be up to date!
OKAY FOLKS...2009 NOW ADDED! leaves us a mere FIVE years to go, if we count 2014 tho' not yet done. we are at a stunning 539!
amended count ending 2009 is now 540! you see, as i got to a 3-9-2010 performance of WATERLOO SUNSET, i click on the song to verify its debut that night. i then see a 6-25-1995 as the first. hence, the new addition. the reason for this error is, as i march through the year chronologically, i simply click "next" on the wiki icon at the top of nightly setlist thread. this 6-25-95 show, does NOT appear in this manner. it is followed by a "pr" next to the date. i wonder what that means. HELP if you read this post ANCT or ANYONE else!!! lol
another edit today, brings us to 541 currently as i had missed EC performing TEARS OF RAGE w/ DYLAN back in 2007 at the bottom of the wiki page here: http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... _St._Louis
2010 NOW HERE ADDING 51 SONGS...WE ARE NOW AT 592!!!
just got around to adding the twenty one i never saw performed in 2011: we are now at 613 here at THIS list! 3 years to go!
ooops, missed the 9-26-2011 live debut of QUIET ABOUT IT, now added. we are 614 songs here now.
2012 is 'in the books' with 25 more added. with 2013 and what we have thus far of 2014 to still be added, we have 639 here now!
what's MY number from the ba seen live list...673? how freaky will it be if we land at that EXACT number when done? 8)
2013 now added here and its 24 LIVE debuts, bringing us to 663! will we have TEN to add (so far) in 2014? talk about coincidence!
THERE IT IS!! a wrap now with up to mid-September 2014 added and it's eleven first time performances this year. bringing us to a total here of 674 upon this list...exactly ONE more than i have seen him perform!
bringing the numbers BACK to a dead heat, WORKING COAL MINE 2006 has been removed as already there from back in 1983!
with the additional subtraction of two more repeats spotted by ANCT, the new total here is down to 671. ENJOY!

This thread has reminded me of this bit from a 1983 interview in Goldmine:
"Oh, now look at this. They've got this wrong. I never played 'Ready Teddy' or 'Rip It Up' And I certainly never played 'Dance To The Music.' And not 'Imagine' either, although I think Steve might've played that. But how in the world do they know that we once recorded 'First I Look At The Purse?' This is too much."

Re: who thinks EC has performed 1500 different songs live?

Post by bronxapostle »

thanks azmuda. funny that you should post this overnight (my time anyway) as i had stopped chronologically last night at THIS show: http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... 01_Atlanta
reason being: i was going to contact anct as i always do with my wiki questions/problems.
i can't credit " A SUMMER PLACE" on my list here as i never count those tiny tidbits that Steve throws in. i have seen SUMMER PLACE interspersed WAY MORE times than the wiki credits and if this is how songs like it RIP IT UP or DANCE TO THE MUSIC are counted, i would indeed strike them from my new list here above. i guess i will have to rely on help here from anyone who has recordings of these shows please. and i should indeed have stated this sooner: i always appreciate any assistance here...especially proof readers and i look for your comments/opinions as i march along. this sure looks like a month long process before this one gets done.

dance to the music was played as a minimedley with full backing of the Attractions at werchter 1981. That one counts definitely. The segment is 1:20m long before going into King Horse.

"Dance To The Music" was also played with Sam Moore and Sting in 2009, long after that interview. (BTW, isn't the opening of the single version of "Blue Chair" pretty much the drum break from "Dance To The Music"?)

Elvis did sing a verse from "Rip It Up" during "Mystery Dance" at 1981-03-22 Leicester. (FLACs available here.)

I think EC has performed 1500 songs live, and I know BA will find them. I looked at the set list from the Atlanta show you mentioned, amazing 38 songs.
Good luck BA!

glad you agree...BRONX and BROOKLYN peacefully co-existing.

srsly, thanks comrades: this is JUST the support i need in this VAST undertaking. also, i guess i must explain my approach and semi-apologize also. i WISH i could have tackled it from the beginning one show/song at a time from the wiki NOT counting my songs seen live as the baseline, but allow me to explain. the simplest. most concise approach i believe was to try to build on the magic number of 673 that i have seen. why you might ask. well, as a lunatic statistician all these 35 years of going to EC shows, re-charting my books and graph papers etc. several times throughout the years, the songs i have seen have kind of become ingrained in my brain. in other words, i do not have to really think when i saw MY LITTLE BLUE WINDOW or LITTLE SISTER for the first or only time...i KNOW it! yet, if i was to try to build this list from the beginning and incorporate the songs i have seen as they appeared chronologically in his repertoire, THEN i would have been in a heap of trouble. confusion WOULD arise. YOU MUST UNDERSTAND. when doing this kind of tedious work; BUSY BODIES becomes BIG BOYS. hence, it was MUCH easier to do the wiki setlists one year at a time and just ignore the ones i have seen as they are already in our BAseline list. if not, my mind would have been swarmed in a convoluted way which SURELY would have had me making already many errors by the time i arrived to the end of 1982! hopefully, i have not YET faltered. believe me, i will err and i BEG your assistance ANYTIME you see me screw up or have an opinion to share. please, CHIME IN! my one astonishing find is just how many setlists from the first 3-5 years are NOT a matter of record. too bad indeed. i bet there were another few songs that would be on this list additionally. okay folks: beautiful day in the neighborhood, off to sun. pool and barbeque....see you later. peace, benny p.s. PRAY FOR ME!

Ba, you do know we're just all waiting for you to produce your list first, before we get to listing your omissions ;) ?

So the criteria is songs played live ? Covers too ? Snippets included or not ?

Remember this old thread ? It may gave you some ideas.

http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3 ... f=2&t=8130

Most of these have been performed live. Then the majority of the selections on my "Elvis Costello Record Collection" blog too....

A daunting task, as migdd said at the time "You're a brave man ba" :) but we can help

as you can probably surmise from perusing the list IMP...YES, snippets too. ANY live performance, whether he sings on it or not. WOW, i do remember that CRAZY list i attempted. the difference with this one being i am trying to tackle it chronologically. again, sadly, i must do it as an addendum to what I have seen live, otherwise utter confusion would have ensued. (see further explanation above!) i appreciate all your good vibes sent this way, and assuredly await ANY omissions being brought to my attention. if they have already occurred in the time scheme before 1990, please feel free to say so now. i would gladly rectify immediately in its proper placement time-wise. in fact, i see ANCT added the Roy Orbison Black & White Night songs to the wiki, so as i had forgotten the bonus track, i must add it now as well. thanks friends!

the 1990's are now a done deal on this list and we are at 324 different from "my" seen live list. FIFTEEN YEARS TO GO! starting to think maybe Dave is right (AGAIN!)...but, i'll keep the faith. if this 324 is doubled by the time we get to the end of 2009, i'll say we DO get to 1500.

as 2004 is in the books, let me chime in once here trumpeting that i am down to the (for now) final TEN YEARS countdown to be added. (2005-2014...or what we have it so far!) these will be big years with many adds and though slightly doubtful that my original prediction will be met, i still await the final number excitedly. we are at 371 for now. 8) 8)

just checking in one time to say 2009 has now been added here and so we have completed another decade. i remain with 4 years complete and 2/3 thus far of 2014 to compile AND we are at 539 tunes added (that i have NOT seen performed) to MY 'seen live' number...which i currently forget. i do recall needing 827 (so i guess the ba list includes 673) added here to get to 1500, which admittedly seems a long shot now. nonetheless, it will be fun to complete. WHO KNEW THIS WOULD TAKE ME TWO MONTHS TO TALLY? immeasurable thanks to ANCT who always comes through with quick responses to many baffling questions. a great co-conspirator in all things statistically significant. and ALL OTHERS HERE please feel free to chime in whenever YOU see an omission or error. when it is a done deal, i guess we could use someone with a 'program' that would combine the two lists and alphabetize them accordingly. this way we can have a list to retain at the wiki. computer non-savvy ba is not certain, but imagines this is probably something that is easily done via such a computer program, yes? thanks for your input as always and let's see what 2010-2014 adds to this list in the coming days! best, ba
