EC solo tours 2014 tally: LAST YEAR OF HIS YOUTH

Post by bronxapostle »

i think we'll do a composite tally for entire year of solo shows this time around currently consisting of 15 North American June dates, 5 U.K. etc. shows in July and 23 more in Europe September/October! does anyone else have a feeling that this "LAST YEAR OF MY YOUTH" tagline is solely for the NYC Carnegie shows as i have seen it NOWHERE else labelled this way? which leads me to wondering (and somewhat hoping) about a possible ELVIS COSTELLO LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL release with this great LYOMY title! anyway on to my usual spiel for these tally threads: pick the number of songs you imagine will be performed solo at these 43 concerts. as a reminder, 200 were played at nineteen dates this past November. so, i do NOT feel particularly daring to call out a VERY DARING number for this # of shows. ba says 377!!!

and so it begins: with the SAME song that began the stellar NOVEMBER 2013 solo tour...

I think you're being a bit optimistic here, BA, I'd be happy if we get more than 250 so I'll settle on 271 . How lucky we are to follow seine who could possibly fulfil our dreams of such a huge numbers of songs . There's no- one on the world currently able to have alive repertoire of this size

As this is the last year of his youth, I think he'll go out with a bang - 333. I think we're going to hear some real lost treasures.

Sulky - I'd have to say that Bruce Springsteen is on a par with a repertoire the size of Elvis's. Elvis is more accessible though 8)

yes VG....only BRUCE and ELVIS are in this realm of performers. virtually ANY song that they have written or recorded AND a good tens of thousands of songs that they have heard and liked in their lives may be played on any given night. funny how they have been my two favorite live performers for 35-40 years now. AND how i actually got to meet BRUCE on the VERY FIRST NIGHT i did go to see ELVIS!! maybe in the first year of their old age, they will finally throw a band together! 8) 8)

I'm not sure if anybody's posted this but Larkin Poe are supporting Elvis on the 19th to 21st June. No doubt Elvis and Larkin Poe will play some songs together (you lucky people) so will these count as separate songs?

hope it remains with NO opening act in NYC! not that i am anti Larkin Poe. some other time, i'd like to see them play together. but, as far as your question VG, i guess the equitable thing would be: if he plays in THEIR set, a "NO" yet if they play with him during his: a "YES!"

However, “Radio Radio” had new resonance when the singer explained that it was about the radio in his heart (with a little Van Morrison thrown in)
Does this refer to a fragment of Van Morrison being thrown in? At first I thought Radio Sweetheart/Jackie Wilson Said but it was the wrong song.

Probably. I don't really know VM's music like I should, but there was a somewhat brief fragment thrown into "Radio Soul" that I recall as repeating the line "Turn it up" --which a Google search tells me is from the song "Caravan."

at the show i saw where he included "CARAVAN"...it was more the integral chorus "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA" section. maybe if there is an audio or video of this song from last night we will be able to add it accordingly! thanks. b

if not familiar with the song, here's a FANTASTIC version from TLW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJXVD-nSSKE

Oh yeah, Iike so many times, a VM song I don't think I know from it's title is instantly familiar when I hear it played!

I can't swear to it, but I think the fragment that was inserted was the part of the song that goes:

"Turn it up, turn it up, little bit higher, radio
Turn it up, that's enough, so you know it's got soul
Radio, radio turn it up, hum
La, la, la, la..."

i have added two from the abbreviated Ann Arbor show last night as well as inserting RADIO RADIO into it's chronological slot from Chicago. it is listed at the wiki page for this show, i guess as a prelude. we are at 57 songs by ba count. what a gent, to do 12 songs and invite people back for another show. some singers could learn loads from this guy. but, we knew that. 8) 8)

as these are SENSATIONAL ANCT, do you think you could add a link for "tour matrices" in that LEFT column at the wiki please? i can't seem to locate them easily. and it would be great if someone with a lot of time on their hands could add all the early ones from the "GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS" book too! (and everything since...) WOW: an undertaking even beyond my scope.
