Elvis at the RAH, London, April 10 2014

Post by johnfoyle »

Elvis will be part of a show for the state visit to London of the Irish president. I'll follow up from computer later with links etc (feel free anyone else to do it) but it looks like he'll be doing something with Steve Nieve & maybe Conor O'Brien of The Villagers.

No mention of EC here, but "surprise guests" are promised.

Royal Albert Hall hosts very special Irish night

Paul Brady, Glen Hansard, Imelda May, Dermot O'Leary, Olivia O'Leary and Joseph O'Connor are among those taking part in Ceiliúradh (Celebration) at the Royal Albert Hall to mark President Higgins and his wife Sabina's State visit to the UK.

President and Mrs Higgins will be guests of honour at the evening of music, spoken word and dance on Thursday April 10, which will be broadcast live on the RTÉ Player and on RTÉ Radio 1 and screened on RTÉ Television later that evening.

Also taking part will be Lisa Hannigan, The Gloaming, Villagers' Conor O'Brien, Eimear Quinn and actress Fiona Shaw, with surprise guests promised on the night.

The house band will include acclaimed musicians Liam Bradley, John Carty, Anthony Drennan, Graham Henderson, Dónal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick, Paul Moore, Caitlín Nic Gabhann, Máirtín O'Connor and Brendan Power.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan said: "This is an important concert which will allow Irish creativity, performance and talent to shine as part of this historic visit."

The Minister continued: "Promoted by the Culture Ireland division of my Department, the concert will be a unique and intimate evening of shared stories, music, song and dance.

"Importantly, this occasion offers us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate our exceptional and long-standing cultural connections with Britain."

He added: "I hope it will encourage, deepen and strengthen these relationships, which benefit us both, into the future.

"I am delighted that this unique concert will be live streamed by RTÉ. The Diaspora, and those who love Irish culture throughout the world, can enjoy the evening. In Ireland, people will be able to listen live on RTÉ Radio 1 or view the concert later that evening when broadcast on TV."

The Royal Albert Hall's Chief Executive, Chris Cotton, said: "It is an enormous honour to welcome the President of Ireland to the Hall for this special event on the occasion of his first State visit to the United Kingdom. I would encourage everyone to join in and become a part of this historic celebration of our shared culture."

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Irish Youth Foundation (UK).

The show is sold out but MOOT tells me he hopes to get a return. A Instragammed photo of Elvis and Conor O'Brien rehearsing has disappeared. Conor is a big EC fan , as these past comments show -

And also nodded to Elvis Costello, “his new album is just as good as any of his albums. He’s the guy I model myself on, to grow old gracefully. To be writing songs like that when you’re fifty...”

Elvis Costello – Battered Old Bird
This is such a visual song. To me it's a sort of patchwork quilt of different characters and aspects of human nature. The key change in the middle is so strange; it exemplifies the strength of the link between the words and music, both of which are the work of a master.

Elvis came back on with the ensemble to do The Auld Triangle & stayed on with Imelda May , Conor O'Brien & Paul Brady to do Tripwire/PLU. Yes, Tripwire. Fair dues to Elvis. He gets to do a song from a his current album in a show celebrating Irish culture. I was, of course, delighted but I can see some accounts telling of people being puzzled at such a relatively obscure inclusion. The MC said something about Elvis having to 'move mountains' to be here. MOOT got into the show but only with a obstructed view. He texted me a few minutes ago to say Elvis joined the finale mass gathering on stage & has posted to f/book 'Also for the closing number "The Parting Glass" - then seen running from the stage to hail a cab to Heathrow...' Chalkie Davies tells me , via f/book, that he heard from Elvis this afternoon and that Elvis is off to Perth in the morning.

Thanks to John for being my warm up act on this thread. Firstly, the setlist:

01: Shipbuilding - EC and Conor O'Brien Vocals and SN Grand Piano
then they went off
some time later, back on again with Conor O'Brien and others for
02: The Auld Triangle - EC Vocals and SN Melodica. EC took a verse alongside many others including Paul Brady and Conor O'Brien.
03: Tripwire/PLU - EC on a blue guitar that I did not recognise. Presumably a borrowed one if all his instruments are en route to Australia. Joined by Conor O'Brien, Paul Brady and Imelda May.
Then off again
04: The Parting Glass - EC and the ensemble.

These four songs were spread across about a ninety minute period, in between the other acts, which included some poetry readings, dance, instrumentals and a speech by the President of Ireland, Michael D HIggins. The "house band" who were on stage, and made a particularly effective contribution to Shipbuilding, included Donal Lunny, Paul Moore (guitar) who has played with Van Morrison and Mark Knopfler, and Brendan Power (harmonica) who has played with Kate Bush, Sting and also Van Morrison.

As John says, our MC, the X-factor's Dermot O'Leary said that EC had "moved mountains" to be at the show. Certainly without him, the line up looks a bit thin.

Trivia fans may have spotted that "The Auld Triangle" was one of the songs in "Inside Llewyn Davies", the recent Coen Brothers film with music by T Bone Burnett.

Those of you posting on the thread for the Blues Fest show at the RAH in October and complaining (rightly) about ticket prices, may like to know that I paid £7.35 at the RAH box office for my ticket for tonight, by virtue of arriving five minutes after the show had started. I had a slightly obstructed view (the platform for the boom TV camera was immediately to our right), but for three or four songs it was good value.

According to the Royal Albert Hall Website:

"An hour-long highlights programme, “Ultimate Irish Music at the Royal Albert Hall: A Presidential Celebration” will be broadcast on BBC 4 at 8pm on Sunday 13 April."

This is confirmed on the BBC Website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0418w10

I think the broadcast footage should be fine, as I could see a lot of what they were filming from the cheap seats immediately next to the guys operating the boom camera to the right of the stage.

You're right, John, it finally came up, don't know what I did to make it do so!

Guess The Parting Glass was not broadcast.

Nice Shipbuilding.

Anyone able to capture video of the other EC appearances besides Auld Triangle?
