Yes, I'm the nutter looking at the dodgy compilations , being rewarded with spotting yet another outing for Elvis's She.

A side thought - the dating game still mystifies me so I fail to figure out the rationale for U2's With Or Without You being on a 'Dates' album .

It's difficult for me to see how The other side of summer (and some of the other tracks on this collection for that matter) qualify as Rock Classics :?

Whoa. That is a cracker, right there. Brilliantly chosen selection. Like many of us, I guess, I know the music of that era really well, but I could happily stick that on and only want to skip, maybe, three or four tracks all evening.

Snips' '9 O'Clock' is a belter which took me ages to find online.

In the new world of streaming and digital downloads, does anyone actually buy these things anymore? I guess they must do, otherwise record companies wouldn't put them out.

But I can't imagine who those people are.

If you want to see who they are, have a stroll around your local supermarket on a Saturday morning. Seriously, if your local Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco or Morrisons* is big enough to have a 'media' section, these are the only kinds of CD they'll stock. Well - they might have two or three copies each of whatever's in the top ten this week, but that's it.

Your music-buying market is largely divided into three sections. (a) Music-lovers over 40 who still want to buy Elvis' new LP (or Weller's new LP, or McCartney's new LP or whatever) as a physical object. There's no point in the high-street shops trying to cater for them (us?) as they will have ordered the booklet-sized/extra-tracks deluxe version (with postcards) from the artist's own website three months ahead of release-date. They're sure as hell not going to try and pick it up in a supermarket, and they probably constitute 0.00001% of the punters Asda are trying to sell baked beans and Prosecco to.

(b) Music-lovers under 40 who access, listen to (and occasionally, if they're in a mad moment, even buy) new music, but who would regard a CD in the way that you and I would regard a wax-cylinder gramophone. So, again, is it worth Asda trying to sell them a CD? It is not.

But here's group (c). They're not that interested in music really. They're over 50. They occasionally watch Later with Jools if there's absolutely nothing else on. and they might have a vague idea who Stuart Maconie is. They like having half-a-dozen CDs handy in case they need some aural wallpaper for a dinner party. But Dad vaguely remembers that when he was a kid, he liked a bit of Motown, and there was that New Wave one, ooh, c'mon, you know the one, the intro goes 'ba-ba-ba-baa!' This family buys two CDs a year, maybe three if they're really stuck for a Christmas present for that annoying old Uni mate who just got back in touch on Facebook. And when they buy one, trust me, it'll be one of these.

* Other supermarket chains are available.

Hawksmoor, that sounds about right. But I think I read that Adele and Ed Sheeran shift copious amounts of CDs too. So are these CDs bought by the over-50s in category C who buy them for their nieces and nephews? (I guess I can't expect you to know everything!)

LOL, I don't know everything, in reality I know nothing! But I love a theory, and I've usually got one. :)

Suspect you are right about Ed Sheeran, Adele and so on, so maybe we can add the latest LP by them (and the other dozen artists of their type) to the compilation CDs that clog up the supermarket racks. These are the artists who (in my personal/subjective opinion) really are the emperor's new clothes. Artists who actually aren't that great. I mean, they're OK, y'know, but they're not significantly better than the other thousand who are trying to get their LP noticed this week. They're just the ones whose agents are lunching with the shakers-and-movers at Radio 2. So Chris Evans plays their single at breakfast-time on a Thursday morning and tells everyone 'this is amazing! You have to buy this! Ed Sheeran is a global star! Everybody else likes his stuff, so you should too!'

There is then a knock-on effect for retailers. Music-lovers (like, I hope, you and I) aren't listening to Chris Evans/Ed Sheeran over breakfast. We're in the study, poring over online websites, trying to work out when Graham Parker's new LP is out or whether there are enough tracks-we-don't-already-have on the new Joe Strummer compilation to make it worth £35.

So there's no point in high-street shops trying to attract us. What we want in a high-street music shop is two copies each of a thousand different LPs/CDs. So we can spend the whole of Saturday afternoon browsing and then maybe buy one. It's much more profitable for them to cater for the 'casual' (limited interest in real music) buyer, and to do that you stock 200 copies each of 20 CDs. Adele, Ed Sheeran, 40-Best-Sunday-Afternoon-Classics and 40 Songs-Dad-Wants-to-Hear-on-Father's-Day.

Economically it's a no-brainer, but it does leave the real 'music lovers' (if we can be as pretentious as to call ourselves that) reading Mojo, listening to 6Music and scouring artists' own websites to find the music we want. But that's OK. I don't need to waste my life listening to Chris Evans eulogising George Ezra because I can occupy my time grooving to 40+ Richard Thompson LPs. We each find our own path. :)
