I'm pulling for the gap in the schedule between Sunday, 13 April in Fremantle, and Thursday, 17 April in Adelaide to be slotted for Darwin, Northern Territory.

But I suppose it's more likely to be Hobart, Melbourne or Canberra.

Elvis Costello’s whole set has sounded like he can’t hear anyone else in the band. Or maybe he’s just going ‘jazz’ for the afternoon.

Trivia: Jesse Winchester's "Midnight Bus" was covered by Pete Thomas' pre-Attractions band Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers in 1974.

I hope a recording pops up soon. I love it when McFee plays with Costello.

Elvis was in good spirits on this hot Perth afternoon. The show included two departures from a typical EC+I festival show. For one, the setlist deviated from focusing on hits by including two songs by Jesse Winchester, who died on April 11. Elvis chatted about him before doing Midnight Bus and then quickly went into Payday.

And then John McFee joined them on stage for the last four songs. It's particularly great to hear John doing his lead guitar lines for Alison, which makes the performance sound much more like the original record than Elvis otherwise achieves. McFee was able to join by virtue of the Doobie Brothers being on the festival bill. They finished playing (on the second stage) half an hour before Elvis started.

There were two acoustic guitars (large and small) on stage behind Elvis but he didn't use either of them. Instead, the set focused on classic-era rock songs played electrically, mostly with his Jazzmaster. Elvis took frequent drinks from a cup, and in the second half of the show his voice started to get a bit hoarse. Nothing like the bad old days of the 1980s and early 90s when he got quite croaky at times, but hoarser than I've heard him since a Rude 5 gig in Perth in 1991. The Imposters did what the Imposters do, with skill and precision. - David Pannell

I'm in Sydney Mojo, making final preparations for the Deni Blues and Roots Festival, where we're looking forward to welcoming Elvis, Pete, Steve and Davey on Saturday evening.

In what was one of the worst clashes of the festival, the crowd seemed split by generation as the Xers and Gen Y headed to the Big Top to see Boy & Bear and most of the Boomers stuck around to see Elvis Costello & The Imposters.

Again it was hits all the way as Costello kicked off his set with Pump It Up and Oliver’s Army. He was joined by Doobie Brother John McFee for Alison and ended his impressive set, perhaps one of his finest in a while, with (What’s So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding.

West Coast Blues'n'Roots review: a day of beards, sequins, stagediving and song

With bands starting at the same time, trying to navigate your way through the blanket dwellers to get from stage to stage is like a game of human Tetris. But seeing Elvis Costello point a megaphone at his guitar during his opening track, Watching the Detectives, made the Burke and Wills-type trek worthwhile. A geek before it was chic, Costello's showmanship and love of performing shines through. Despite his bookish, bespectacled exterior the raw energy of his punk days still lurks just beneath the surface. The ballads Everyday I Write the Book and Alison are still tender and rich. And as Costello joked: "There is nothing like hearing Alison sung in an Australian accent."

quite an "old" setlist. With Everyday I write the book as newest song played. and that one is more than 30 years old.

Fair enough. But "Midnight Bus" (not to mention "Payday") certainly qualify as "newer to EC." In fact, unless I'm wrong, I don't think he's ever played ""Midnight Bus" before, even if it's composition pre-dates his own songs.

I agree that's a fair comment. But this is a set to please a festival crowd in a country he hasn't played for a while.

I would guess the Jesse Winchester tribute took up the time which otherwise would have gone to a couple of newer songs.

Sorry for confusing matters. He didn't do Midnight Bus, it was Quiet About It. I went with the Set List on setlist.fm without thinking about it, but I should have seen the mistake.

I also didn't mention that he included a bit of a song from Wise Up Ghost in Chelsea. I'm pretty sure it was Walk Us Uptown, but I didn't record it. It was a pretty heavy Imposters version, not at all Hip Hoppy.
