I thought for once I'd get in here before John and ask whether anyone else apart from Ian Hughes is going to be at this show (or the ones following)?

(extract)

The crowd at wednesday’s sell-out show at the recently inaugurated EX Theater Roppongi witnessed Costello and the Impostors perform such classics as Veronica and I Want You, among many others. The audience also got the opportunity to have Mr Costello sing right next to them, when in a couple of occasions he went down from the stage and walk around (even hugging) his fans.

The show lasted over two hours and while many of the songs in the Wheel were heard on this first show of the tour, many more were left unplayed. So, even for those who got tickets for more than one occasion, next concert will be a totally different experience. However, one thing is for sure, it will be equally fun and entertaining.

Score one for the dispassionate reporting of the Costello Camp and the difficulty of keeping an ordered set list in the dark. Yes, definitely Monkey to Man after the Sing a RaInbow, and Slow drag with Josephine before Jimmie. I was probably wrong on Detectives, but he definitely played I Want You. More to come after breakfast.

@JJohnFoyle to spin the wheel? Excellent

@ayako445 Actually it wasn't the wheel but the hammer, and he did my request!

Ian Hughes' review from Facebook, reposted with his permission:

Very preliminary draft of a review of last night, due to a late rise, a week's worth of washing in a coin laundry, and an afternoon spent in obvious locations around Roppongi:

ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS
Ex Theatre, Roppongi, Tokyo

11 December 2013 Spinning Songbook Show

You can take the primary school teacher out of the classroom (and it's been just over eight years) but you can never get away from your past. Lying in bed waiting to drift off after a great show in an excellent venue with some major irritants I was reminded of one of the old primary school top level organisers that ran under the moniker of PMI. Plus, Minus, interesting, which has, in this case been transformed, through The Good, The Bad and The Ugly into The Great, The Could Have Been Better and The Downright Ugly.

Starting with the latter:

The Downright Ugly: nothing to do with Elvis, everything to do with the venue's approach to the punters. now, this may be standard operating Practice when it comes to concerts in Japan, but three major gripes:

Getting into the venue: where every other venue I've been to had a ground floor point of entry, rather than walking in through the door that opens off the vestibule at the front of the building, we were directed up a flight of steps, across a walkway and back down a flight of steps into a marshalling area that's on the other side of the door that you'd have thought was the logical point of entry.

The logical point of entry, it seemed, was for the well connected. The average punter, who paid for his or her ticket has to go via the Cape.

The crowd control: Once you're there the punters are herded by marshals with bullhorns operating at maximum volume to a point where you're up for:

The extra slug. A compulsory ¥500 slug for a drink, which is downright stupid. We paid ¥8000 for the tickets, ¥500 for the presale, ¥210 for service charges. total ¥8710. Very reasonable.

Add ¥500 to the standard ticket price, add a note on the ticket that the bearer is entitled to a free drink, and you'll more than likely find a fair swag of the punters not opting to claim it. Add a bit to the bottom line, and do away with the needed for high volume directions about paying the extra for the free drink. Win, win.

Could Have Been Better: The selection of punters brought up to spin the wheel didn't hit any sparks to set things off on a tangent, apart from the Hammer of Song in the encore, who delivered a request for Church Underground and got it, despite Elvis' "this band doesn't know that song."

Overall, the people up there for the spin seemed overawed, and the language factor probably didn't help. But you'd reckon the odd eccentric would have added to the fun.

Applause at the end of the main set was enthusiastic but fairly subdued, and I suspect Elvis thought he'd be flat out cranking things up to the point where he could get a third encore in. You wouldn't expect a polite crowd who are used to showing courtesy and respect in public to go hooting and hollering, stamping the feet and yelling for More. I was tempted, myself, but I thought it would be impolite to those around me.

This, after all, is a country where, over the space of around six weeks stretching over three visits I have NEVER heard someone talking loudly over a mobile phone in public, let alone delivering a frank, obscenity laden recount of last night's contretemps with the now ex-boyfriend or girlfriend.
The first encore was, as a result, more like a second set that combined what would have gone into two encores in other cases. In any case, he managed to work things to the point where they could gov off and come back for the regulation thunderous finish.

The Excellent: once inside the venue it was obvious there wasn't a bad seat, at least as far as the balcony was concerned. Sound was good, clear, loud but not overwhelming. From the balcony you got a chance to see things you'd miss otherwise (e.g. Steve's keyboard work).

Elvis was obviously thinking on his feet (see above) and seemed determined to deliver. which he did in spades.

Talking in the dark.

The Wise Up Ghost material in a band setting.

Encore 1, from church Underground onwards. Thanks, Ayako!!

I'm checking with the original uploader, but my guess is it was deleted because one of the tracks was numbered incorrectly. I'll repost it if he doesn't.

Whoo hoo! I've been dying to hear the Imposters' versions of WUG material. Now if someone could only post the video that was broadcast in Japan. Hard to believe someone has not uploaded that yet.

Yes, what's up with that? No one in Japan will share a pro shot full concert TV broadcast with us? It's an outrage, I say!

I've been checking kickasstorrents and d2 almost daily.

Great to have the audio though.
