It's amazing how many songs appear on that stage setlist but did not get played during the tour: "Red Cotton" (played at a soundcheck recorded by bronxapostle but not played at an actual show), "Down Among The Wines And Spirits," "Georgie And Her Rival" (not played since 1991, and rarely played even then!), "Stations Of The Cross," "Big Sister's Clothes," and "Alibi".

"Song With Rose" and "No Wonder" also appeared on earlier stage setlists without being played.

I've run out of superlatives (I only know 2 :) ). What a fantastic tour. And look at the songs that he could have but didn't play...

So glad I was able to make it to this and the Easton show. As much as I wished for some more Blood and Chocolates and Imperial Bedrooms I honestly cannot complain at all. Clearly he was showing some of the wear of the tour at this last stop but the fact that he just kept playing and playing really goes to show what an amazing performer Costello is and considering the song I was planning to try and request was King of Confidence I couldn't have been any happier (or more surprised) when I heard him start it up.

Great tour and thanks so much to everyone who made recordings - I can't wait to listen to them!

I fixed King Of Confidence, thanks to the watchful eye of my fact checker here at the Fan Forum.

My audio recording, which sounds fantastic, should be on Dime sometime tomorrow (Friday).

upon further review...the call on the field STANDS! i will credit it as RADIO RADIO SOUL (a mash-up) in my archives as he clearly sings the first three lines from RADIO RADIO instead of RADIO SOUL lyric AND also plays it this night, while attempting to honor a request for RADIO RADIO, in the style of the 1978 take. 8)

For sure it was different when he played radio soul the night before. I'd back you up on a mash up even if it came from a little confusion on his part.

I liked it in any case

oh yes Jack...he DEFINITELY confused himself. but, if memory serves me well, someone from the audience right then DID call for RADIO RADIO. if he indeed thought he would semi-honor their request by attempting to sing the lyric of RADIO SOUL at the more driven tempo, therein lied the confusion of going with the first three lines from RADIO RADIO. the remainder i believe he stuck with the SOUL lyric, but again, much more in the vein of 1977-78 versions. thanks for chiming in here. like hearing other's opinions, especially those who witnessed it occur upon the stage that night. and moreso, those who AGREE with me.

He did a whole spoken intro for radio soul the night before too, I'm sure I've heard a version of it before. But right into the radio radio on this night and then the morph

First off--as someone who's been going to see EC since 1979 and yet only registered on these boards a couple weeks ago--thanks, thanks, THANKS to the folks (bronxapostle and others) who video'd the various shows on this just-ended tour.

I don't know about the rest of you, but this seems to have been the very type of tour I've been hoping he'd do all these many years. My only regret is I only got to see two of the shows (Engelwood and Kingston). Had I known the setlists were going to be so mindf--kingly terrific, I would've got tics for at least three or four more (including that second night in Morristown--my God).

A question: Despite having access to the aforementioned video, is there someplace (a site, a blog, etc.) where I can download audio-only recordings from this tour?

Thanks

PS: I got ahold of the BBC documentary on EC, "Mystery Dance," which debuted in the UK on 11/9. Watched it last night. Was pretty good as these things go, especially the first half hour or so, which concentrated on his childhood, dad, mom. EC cooperated with the film, and he and the director walked and drove through the streets of Liverpool. Terrific stuff. Interviews with N. Lowe, A. Toussaint, P. McCartney, T.B. Burnett, S. Nieve, and lots of chat from EC himself. Worth looking for on your friendly neighborhood torrent site.

Are you familiar with torrents? If so:

1. Go to http://www.dimeadozen.org

Elvis Costello in Morristown: Who needs a band?

Bands are over-rated.

Armed with a few guitars, some effects pedals and a keyboard, Elvis Costello single-handedly channeled the energy of an entire ensemble for two-and-a-half hours at Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center on Thanksgiving Eve.

He still might be banging out encores, too, if spectators had not felt compelled to head home and start roasting their birds.

So in this regard, at least, Rock and roll’s Angry Young Man–who once sparked a mini-riot Down Under by skipping encores after a short set–has mellowed in middle age.

Maybe Elvis was celebrating the end of his 2013 solo tour. Or perhaps, at 59, the singer-songwriter was in no hurry to rush home to 7-year-old twins.

In any case, the concert caught fire when Elvis finally emerged from the wings, after completing an exploration of some of his lesser known chestnuts, to invite audience requests.

Spectators had been almost reverent to that point. But they went wild as Elvis ripped through Oliver’s Army, Alison and (What’s So Funny ’bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.

Feeding off the crowd’s enthusiasm, he romped through two sets of encores, totaling 17 songs–essentially, a second show.

Once infamous for scathing and intemperate remarks, the mature version of Elvis Costello seems comfortable sharing his wry sense of humor.

He introduced one song on Wednesday with a funny anecdote about the co-author of Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel.

(The Elvis in Elvis Costello is, of course, a tribute to Presley; the other half of Declan MacManus’ stage name is a nod to his father, who performed under the name Day Costello.)

The Presley writer had pulled Costello aside to share how The King once donned a disguise to catch a show during the Englishman’s first tour of America.

This was quite a feat, Costello recounted, since Presley had been dead for about four months when that tour began.

Elvis Costello also described how the song Harry Worth emerged after his younger self–who “tried to rid the world of alcohol by drinking it”–stumbled into a hotel bar where a wedding reception for an ill-fated couple was under way.

At another moment in Wednesday’s show, a spectator shouted that she loved Elvis. Without missing a beat, he shot back: “I love you, too–individually and as a group.”

In another era, Elvis Costello might have been a poet. Mocking his own love of words, he once dubbed himself “rock and roll’s Scrabble champion.” One of the amazing things from this concert–his second straight night in Morristown–was how, with few cheat sheets, he remembered a torrent of lyrics. Thirty-six songs’ worth.

The other thing that stood out was how hard he is to categorize. Elvis Costello has written orchestral pieces for ballet; collaborated with ex-Beatles and Burt Bacharach and jazz singer Diana Krall, his wife; performed in tributes to The Clash and recorded with Tony Bennett; and appeared in episodes of Two and a Half Men and Frasier.

His songs don’t go where you expect. His phrasing and chord changes don’t sound like anyone else. In a world of imitators, Elvis Costello is unique.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

No problem.

1. Go to http://www.foobar2000.org/download
2. Download foobar2000
3. Use foobar2000 to play the .flac files
4. Use foobar2000 to convert the .flac files to mp3

EASY!

Playing the flac files is easy; converting them to mp2, not so much.

Why wouldn't the people doing the recording just upload them as mp3s in the first place? Isn't that the format the overwhelming majority of people (not to mention iTunes) use? Just wondering.

Flac is supposed to sound better. Lossless. Why convert to MP3?
