Maintenance January 13-14

Postby DrSpooky » Fri Jan 12, 2007 9:19 pm

I need to do some maintenance on the computer hosting the site and it may be up and down during these days. I will post when I am done.

Thanks.

Maintenance should now be complete. With any luck, you folks only noticed a few minutes
of downtime or weirdness. I got the following done:

+ UPS installed (Thanks to JohnE for the UPS)
+ Switched to dedicated external hard drive for backups (Again .. thanks JohnE)
+ Updated Wiki software for the other side of the EC Site.
+ Switched URL style so there are not ?'s in Wiki URLS for EC Site.
+ OS upgrades installed.

Just to let you all know I try to keep up with updates to the Board's software, the Wiki's software and the server's OS. It is normally just a matter of a couple of days before any new update is loaded. If you ever spot a security announcement and are concerned that I missed it, please ping me.

Nice work! Thanks. I don't know what UPS is beyond a delivery service, but all is working fineroonie.

UPS ==> Uninterruptible Power Supply.

Fancy term for what is essentially a battery that the computer will automatically run on when the power fails. In this case, we are avoiding hard shutdowns on the site. If the power isn't off long, the site will never go down. If it is off too long (30 minutes?), then it will shutdown gracefully by itself and automatically back up when the pwoer comes back.
