Where is everyone?

It looks like posts have slowed down.

Doc, sometimes the site is taking so long to load that I have to move on. Today it seems a little faster, but icons take forever still. Not a complaint, I know you guys are working hard.

It's OK to complain. I am at the head of that line. We just keep plugging.

I see the same issues when I try the site from work. As I type this, I can see the icons filling in.

I'm still having the same problem, it takes two or three attempts for each page to load.

Hopefully not just me, but the performance tonight (UK time) seems both ticketty and boo.

Well done Doc, and long may it continue!

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? :)

I have visited the ISP and borrowed an upgrade which nearly doubles the bandwidth available to the site.

Let's see how this does.

It's been slow again for me just now, having to click three times, etc., but maybe it will be quicker from here on. Will report back!

Our suspicion is that it is not a bandwidth issue but a limit on the number of concurrent connections in either the cable modem or my firewall/router.

I hope we are close to resolving this.

Sorry for any interruptions, I am trying to get to the point where the server is the only computer connected to the internet here. This will eliminate any intervening boxes or routers.

I have something picked out to try if I can find it in Huntsville on a Sunday and purchase it.

lately I'd been noticing that when I would click on a post it sometimes would take ages to load or fail to load altogether. If I then clicked the browser toolbar button to stop loading the page and tried again, it usually resolved the issue. Strange.
all the time.
Same thing, I'm afraid.
Actually, it took three attempts to make this post.

I have the same issue inside our network. It appears that the firewall/router is overloaded with concurrent connections. There is no way to increase them and I can't seem to find a new firewall/router on a Sunday which is better than what I have.

I am trying to figure out a way to unhook the firewall/router as a test.

I have just installed a brand spanking new firewall/router which claims to be able to handle 1000s of concurrent connections. I saw a review where it succesfully handled 180 concurrent connections which tied it for the top spot.

Let's see how things go now. :)

OK .. so things look better with the new firewall/router.

I have to get things back to a maintainable point and return the borrowed cable modem with uncapped bandwidth. As of 10:15 Central Time, we are back to the old cable modem and thus the old bandwidth. Let's see how this goes.

If we really need the higher bandwidth, then I will either have to buy more or block enough people downloading pictures to make it up. But so far, I have seen little that indicates we are consistently using more than 50% of the bandwidth for extended periods.

Reports wanted.

Is that posting pictures here, doc, or grabbing them from here and posting them elsewhere or both? I'd be happy to stop posting pictures if it helps.

It is not anything anyone on the board is doing. It is like a myspace page or blog that includes pictures and uses a direct linking to an image hosted here. Most of the pictures posted on the board actually are linking to pictures hosted on other sites so we don't see the problem.

As best I can tell, even allowing these deep links isn't causing us a problem yet. I have been watching our bandwidth usage closely and we are in the 30-40% range most of the time with periods of 50-60% usage.

Please don't change how you are using the board. In fact, it is cool and appropriate to link images from elviscostello.info here.

Now it is time for the next step. We survived almost 24 hours using the new firewall/router and our regular bandwidth limits. Now I need to get the kids' computer back on the net. I had removed it earlier to reduce variables.

So as of 6:30 Central Time, there will be some minor network changes on this end which I hope/expect no one will be able to detect.

Let me know if t here are issues.

This is weird. I'm jinxed on this thread. Twice I've mailed to sing your praises and tell you how fast it is now, and I even used the word 'genius' last time! Can the bandwidth not handle such expansiveness?

Save your praise for some lovely lass. It will be much more productive. :)

We should be back online now with the Spooky network almost back to normal even if all the cables still aren't as neat as they once were.
