Re: 'How to Play the Guitar and Y' - a audio book by Elvis , Sept. 2021

Now available on CD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1799790053/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_98G933BZVH1M1XP94GKK I'm interested but...how much of a palaver is this for a UK buyer? I can just order it from Amazon US and they convert the price to £ for me (and then spend six weeks 'shipping' it, naturally)? Or it's e...

Re: "The Resurrection of Rust" - 2022 album by Rusty (EC & Allan Mayes)

Just listened to it right through for the first time to try and get a fix on who’s doing what. All the Imposters appear to be playing on every track. Surrender to the Rhythm (Nick Lowe): Elvis and Allan trade alternate lines on the verses and sing the chorus together. I’m Ahead If… (Jim Ford): Allan...

Re: Look-Hear-Listen-Now with Elvis Costello, May - June 2022

This tour now starts tomorrow. Indeed. So, because of football shenanigans' (with which I have zero sympathy, having no interest in football), it turns out I will be on the 'opening night' (Leeds, tomorrow). I will report back as soon as I can on what 'some surprises' and 'other records' might appe...

Re: New compilation / package, based on Painted From Memory, 2022

(…) Hmm. That does sound a bit more like a compilation of the PFM tracks plus other previously-released collaborations with Burt, plus the two new tracks. I'm getting doubtful now about whether it will include out-takes or demos. Not overly bothered about 54th Street or the RAH, I've got good quali...

Look Hear Listen Now (specifically Leeds)

I'm quite excited about these events. Well, the only one I'm actually going to is Leeds on Sunday (29th) but it sounds promising. They're billed as 'fabulously compact venues' on the official site, and indeed, all my dealings for the Leeds one have been via Crash Records (which appears to be an inde...

Re: The Boy Named If, new album by Elvis & The Imposters, January 14, 2022

I love how on an EC album that the song that you like the least ends up being a real favorite. For TBNI, I cringed a little when I first heard “Mistook for a Friend” - now I love it. For Look Now, it was “Dishonor the Stars”. Then there is “In the Darkest Place”, “The Name Of This Thing Is Not Love...

Re: The Boy Named If, new album by Elvis & The Imposters, January 14, 2022

I'm finding the contrarian opinions refreshing, especially the way they're being expressed here-- not in any way bitter or angry, just clear-eyed that we all receive these things differently depending on where we are situated in our lives. Not everything connects! What a great post, and makes me th...

Absolutely! Aren’t we fortunate not to have someone releasing material that we might buy out of loyalty and then feel heartbroken to think they had sunk to such a low level. Not thinking of anyone in case you think I’ve someone in mind but there have been so many tailings off . Didn’t Elvis once sa...

Re: Elvis at Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala, April 13, 2022

N. T. writes on Costello-l Facebook: “What a treat. Elvis sang a wonderful version of We Are All Cowards Now arranged by Ted Nash of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.” Nice! I thought that was also one of the standout tracks on Hey Clockface , maybe even my favorite. Of the non-Paris tracks, I ...

After taking an extended break from TBNI, returning to it is amazingly rewarding. It’s a REALLY REALLY good record. No doubt about it. Putting it on the same level as Get Happy!! is a bit crazy, since I believe that is the greatest record EVER made! You have a kindred spirit here. In fact, Get Happ...

Re: Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson, Roseanne Cash: April 5th

It's an incredible and beautiful song, and Elvis is in heavyweight league here. But, natural bias aside, he owns this. His falsetto on the chorus is spine-tingling, but when he comes in with the verse at 2:45, it moves to a new level. I'd love to know how much of this - lyrically and musically - is ...

Re: Elvis on Facebook: “More surprises coming”

That would be great. Elvis hasn’t milked everybody for the original release  True. He (or the record company) ned a little more time to milk the original release, I guess - based on the fact that Cruel Smile/Clarksdale only came out three or four months after their 'parent LP'? I can't remembe...

Re: Elvis on Facebook: “More surprises coming”

I'm going to tie two bits of circumstantial evidence together and link this to the news of more recording at Memphis Magnetic, and speculate that we'll get a mini-LP based on TBNI with out-takes and alternative versions. In the style of The Clarksdale Sessions/Cruel Smile, that kind of thing.

Re: Liz Terrell covers Almost Blue

Not a big fan of that, if honest. An exercise in stretching every syllable to maximum length to squeeze out some emotion. Much prefer Elvis' lighter touch approach to singing it. It's an incredible song, so let the song do the work.

Re: Elvis in Bob Dylan’s new book The Philosophy Of Song

Elvis is the king of the contrived rhyme or half-rhyme. Which is great, as I love rhyme, and think it's a hugely under-rated technique - because everybody thinks anyone can do it. Look at this: 'Running wild just like some Child ish tan trum ' That's a masterclass in rhyming. I would call those vis...

Joshua Redman is on the new version, which can be heard here: https://michaelleonhart.bandcamp.com/album/the-normyn-suites Excellent, thank-you. So as far as my ears can tell me, Elvis' vocal is identical on both versions, and the only difference is the solo from around 2:45 onwards. They're both s...

This should be a really interesting read. OK, so we've got...'Newspaper Pane' and 'Radio Is Everything' - non-essential in as far as they're the identical versions that we already have? Then two versions of 'Shut Him Down', one of which is new? Which is the version we already have - Joshua Redman or Chris Potter?
