I think I was largely reacting to: "Do-gooders and reformers lead our nation to defeat. While murderers and terrorists get compassionate release " Who are these terrible do-gooders and reformers who are so destructive to England? Again, in a U.S. context at least, "do-gooder" is ...

Sounds great. I grew up hearing and more or less loving the Kinks, but mostly by osmosis. For some reason, I've never owned any of their albums. Possibly because a lot of their output during the time I was bying a lot of records was sort of scattershot sounding, but Davies is obviously one of the be...

RIP Moira Shearer

First Fayard Nicholas and now this. If I were an aging top-level dancer who'd appeared on film, I'd be worried. Anyhow, stunning woman and absolutely amazing performer. I'm not a big ballet afficionado, but I bow to no one in my admiration for Pressberger-Powell, and she's pretty breathtaking everyt...

I saw one person reading the paper on the bike the other day. You wouldn't go to the movies and dose off would you......unless you were watching one of the Matrix Movies of course.... Do you mean a moving bike or a stationary one. Because reading on a moving bike would be dangerous. Stationar...

Nah, I just kind of felt like doing it. I was alone...it was sort of the same impulse as touching the artwork. Which I did once at the MoMA when I was ten. I still remember how it felt...it was a cloth woven out of human hair... You really need to run through the L'ouvre someday. All the best artsy...

But, Ms. BA, this is based on the assumption you need to lose weight, which I strongly suspect you don't. Ah, women. Anyhow, it is ironic that swimming is the exercise most enjoyed by actual overweight folks. Fat, it seems, is boyant. As a kid, I was downright fat -- as opposed to my current status ...

I liked "Match Point" too, though I have to say I found it tough slogging during the middle portions. It doesn't have the same dramatic tension as the "Crimes" half of "Crimes and Misdemeanors", which it's so often compared to because the main character is not really th...

RIP Fayard Nicholas

One of only the only two dancers in movie history who was as good (or better) than Fred Astaire -- and, in terms of sheer physical chutzpah, well, they were way, way ahead of Fred. http://news.yahoo.com/s/playbill/20060125/en_playbill/97552 Fayard Nicholas, the Tony Award winning choreographer who w...

He was definitely great in "Reservoir Dogs" and other movies. However, in hindsight, I've heard things that were worrisome, though I can't remember precisely where (possibly in the reality-verse talking with El Vez, or maybe elsewhere) he'd been cut out of several films or been strangely n...

Have never heard any of his music. My personal opinion is that West was somewhat incorrect on that broadcast. He should have said "poor" instead of "black." I think he cares about the needs and concerns of all upscale Republicans without regard to race...not so sure about creed, ...

I was so impressed by his speech at the DNC a year or two back that I'm almost afraid to say anything about what I think could be in this guy's future, lest I jinx it. Let's just say that if a Republican wins the Presidency in '08 and I see no major signs of a Mr. Obama becoming just another politic...

After that, John Hiatt, who has this great R & B voice and writes songs that are sheer poetry -- he and Nick have worked together often in the past -- when John started out in the early 1970s he was touted as "The American Elvis Costello" (a kiss of death) and they have a lot in commo...

For some unfathomable reason, 'American without Tears' surfaces from time to time in department store Muzak here in Canada - I've heard instrumental versions of it at least twice at Zellers. And I hear 'Every Day I write the Book' on a regular basis in public space. That one has definitely penetrat...

Elvis has this uncanny ability to team up with people who I didn't realize were my earlier musical heroes until after he reintroduced them to me...if you follow me, which you probably don't.... It's basically that both Tossaint and Burt Bacharach are, in very different ways, part of the (obnoxious m...

I tend to lean towards more sophisticated and/or eclectic types, but there's no denying the man's status, musical power and influence or that the horn section on his records always rocked way hard. I'm also kind of pissed that I never got to see him live.
