Re: New Gig Thread

Excellent to hear you had as good a time as I did last year and agree completely with your accurate description. This balance of elements, on the back of 4 superb albums, and also happening to be one of the best live bands you could see makes me think they are the best current band out there. I want...

Re: New Gig Thread

Wow, should be a great evening. St V is playing here soon but I haven't got tickets. Hope you enjoy The National as much as I did last Nov and look forward to reading your responses. I was playing their last album again this morning and it seems to me they can do no wrong. Strong in every department...

Re: New Gig Thread

Was wondering if you'd scored K Bush tickets, given your wife's love of her. How the hell did you do it? I tried my hardest, only the top price tickets remained when I was finally able to click on anything, and by the time you'd clicked them, they'd all gone too. Good to know a diehard fan was lucki...

Re: T-Bone / Dylan project: Lost On The River

Autumn. M&S (the band not the shop) seem to produce contempt to the same measure that they project intense passion. It's so very easy to hate them. The fact that they created a video that was a self-parody was presumably a riposte to this, but at the same time an admission that there's a lot to ...

Here too, it would seem, though personally I had to look up what 420 day was: http://www.theguardian.com/society/shortcuts/2014/apr/16/high-in-hyde-park-420-day-cannabis Like this comment on the above article!: "I wish I could be there with some sort of wheeled food cart. If anyone were to get ...

Re: T-Bone / Dylan project: Lost On The River

I'm in good company! Mumf & Sons produce an almost pathological reaction in me. The combination of bludgeon + uninteresting songcraft, as you nicely put it, is a lethal one. I don't mind Coldplay anything like as much, and in fact was enjoying the song Viva La Vida as I checked in here, which I ...

Re: T-Bone / Dylan project: Lost On The River

Don't know if this link contains more info, but I share it in case it might be of use (not having seen it on this thread): http://www.thenewbasementtapes.com/ Does anyone else have issues with EC being connected with Marcus Mumford? I have a real problem with Mumford and Sons. My own description of ...

Re: R.I.P

That's very sad. V obvious connection here with a rapt audience, Neko Case in tears, Elvis confessing it got him in both the rehearsal and the recording, and Ron S at the end drinking it all up. An amazing song. It's the only thing I really know from Jesse, but it made enough of an impact to make me...

Re: Morrissey when you least expect it

V&I is magnificent, arguably his best solo work overall. I also loved the immense power of the opener Now My Heart Is Full. Don't miss out this time!

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Interesting point. Haven't seen anything on this. Is it definitely a sample or an acknowledgement of a songwriting debt to it? The chord progression is definitely similar, less so when the vocal comes in, but listen to the opening and sing Come The Meantimes over it. there are other touches - the ke...

Re: New Gig Thread

Well at least someone appreciated it! I had an idea I'd seen a mention of him reacquainting himself with the Negatives for some Stateside shows in a similar vein, but this may have been just in my dreams. Reasonably decent capture of the closing song of the evening, and probably one of the most epip...

Re: New Gig Thread

Not sure it's even worth posting this, but last night I witnessed a sublime gig: Lloyd Cole and the Leopards at the lovely Shepherds Bush Empire (on Lloyd's 53rd birthday). Only time I've seen him with a backing band other than the Commotions and this was far more satisfactory than their 2004 reunio...

Re: Letter from Attorney and Deletion of Posts

That is true, an alert is enough for people to go and find it. Presumably no-one can be hauled over coals for referring to something being uploaded elsewhere?! Presumably Dimeadozen are potentially in hot water, though they've just celebrated their 10th anniversary, have 115k active peers, and as I ...

Re: Letter from Attorney and Deletion of Posts

Thanks, Doc. Sorry to hear about this. I guess you need to be a bit cagey about details, but I'm struggling to work out what site of stuff was being cited. Can't you be more explicit? After all, that will help avoid such things. At first I thought it was maybe bootlegs on dimeadozen, as there are al...

Great stuff. Few towns of 15.5k inhabitants have a resident as legendary in them. His death was the first item on the BBC4 news that morning.

Re: EC a specialist topic on MasterMind

There's no comparison whatsoever between the 2004 ones and these. Evidence of the relentless dumbing down of everything, or just a different question setter. Even I could get all of these no probs, whereas before there were several ones I wouldn't have had a clue with (catalogue numbers!).

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Oh ho ho ho ho! Good job the Pixies' EP1 was in there, wouldn't have been on otherwise. I love how all (or almost all? not sure with some lower down) of the acts there hail from or were active in the 80s. Made me chuckle. Funny how much Bowie has been up there in these polls, and while much of it is...

Re: Favorites of 2013 in CD

Wow, some huge overlaps there with mine. Nice list, and good to actually see someone else celebrating the magnificent Myrtle and Rose. I love the way it has no break from verse/chorus at all until quite late in the song, and when it comes it's a simple but spellbinding piece of guitar. Can't wait fo...

Re: R.I.P

I bought his Selected Poems ('66-'87) today on behalf of my mother-in-law for her to give her husband as a gift. A great selection. I enjoyed the tang of his Oysters once again in the queue (yes! in a bookshop! hooray for Christmas!), but I would have loved to get this one for myself: http://www.ama...
