Re: New Gig Thread
Saw Nick Lowe solo last night here in St. Louis. Best show I've seen of anyone in years. The Jesus of Cool has never been better. Full of nuance, subtlety, wit, and could rock it hard when he needed to . . . . all with a voice in fine form, AND an amazing guitar player. Nick is up there with Sinatra...

Re: Your Top 10 Favourite Elvis Costello Albums
okay, okay, PFM has some of Elvis worst vocals and "overblown" is a good word for it, but it also has some of his very, very best. A few tracks as well as portions of tracks should've maybe been left off, edited, or redone. But I put it in my top ten, and the title track Painted from Memor...

Yeproc site and Facebook site just announced yesterday a bunch of dates for Nick solo acoustic and headlining. Woo-hoo!

Re: Recently viewed films
Saw Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" last night. Came away slightly disappointed. Guess I shouldn't have read all the hyped-up positive reviews. It had lots of kind've funny moments, but like most Wes Anderson movies, tried too hard to be quirky and artsy. Its almost as good as Royal Tann...

Re: South Bank Show: "The Making Of Almost Blue"
Gotta love Billy Sherill in this. He seems like he would rather be doing anything else than producing Elvis. And his deadpan comment about if the album is a success, then he'll get another boat! And Elvis explaining his version of "Sitting and Thinking" with the line I got drunk last night...

Maybe he is in fundraiser mode. After losing mega bucks in that financial swindle. And the music industry being in shambles.

Bruno Mars was the best part of what little I watched. McCartney looked weird and sounded awful and what a weak song. Katy Perry has nice boobs, but that is all. LL Cool Jay as emcee? Felt ashamed of myself for tuning in.

Elvis height? About 5'10 I'd guess.
Spike is one of my least favorites. Cluttered is a good word. Too much instrumentation . . .

Re: What live versions of songs do you prefer to the studio
I sure enjoyed a several oldies that were made fresh again on the Spinning Songbook tour: Green Shirt Beyond Belief even Veronica hell, they're all better LIVE after you've heard them several dozen times on the studio version, except I AM sick of Pump It Up, live or studio, as said in a previous thr...

Watched Hugo with the kids. Very excellent use of 3D, and some great filmmaking, but overall I was kinda bored and underwhelmed. Kept waiting for something exciting to happen that never did. Great acting on the part of the kids.

Re: Tom Waits- "Bad As Me"
Otis - that would probably be the song Get Lost, and I think it is the 4th track. I can hear the similarity. I agree completely with your review, Poor Deportee. Hell Broke Luce and Satisfied are instant skips for me, and so the album seems very short without those 2 tracks. Tell Me on the bonus disc...

My wife and I saw Nick/Wilco show about a month ago and indeed it was a great show. Since the seats were open, we sneaked our way all the way down to nearly the front row to enjoy Nick's solo opening set and he was in top form. Always a treat to see Nick. Wilco was also very good, but for me, Nick h...

Re: The wonder of the game!
I was driving back home to St. Louis on my way back from Chicago last night. Drove right by the stadium about 9:30 pm -- Hwy 40 is pressed right up against it -- and I rolled down all the windows on the car so I could hear the crowd and smell the dogs and popcorn and to take this blurry photo. Then ...

Re: Tom Waits- "Bad As Me"
Kinda disappointed in it. A few great tracks, but a few clunkers, too. Feels a little bit like Tom phoned this one in. Not in the same category as Mule Variations, Alice/Blood Money, Orphans, or Real Gone.

Got the new Wilco deluxe edition yesterday and really enjoying it. Looking forward to seeing them in St. Louis on Tuesday, and of course especially looking forward to Nick opening. Wilco is a great band. They are starting to remind me a lot of Pink Floyd though, and I mean that in a good way. Anyone...

Its a dandy of an album. His cover of Poisoned Rose was okay, but I preferred his take on "You Hang Your Head (Home is Anywhere)" that he did at the Nick sings Elvis/Elvis sings Nick concert.

Mailman just delivered my copy of "The Old Magic" and also my deck of cards. 4 days early, but I'll take it!
Gotta admit, the toothy retro chick on the cover is freaking me out a little bit.

Re: SP&S Vs. NR: Which Do You Prefer ?
Poor Deportee, I don't prefer one over the other based just on songwriting, but on whether I want to hear it. That would be akin to just looking at the liner notes of each, without having ever listened to either one before and making a judgement purely on which offers the better writing. I don't thi...
