Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

Got my vinyl copy yesterday. Tony Millionaire's artwork looks so much better in an LP. The inside is just the lyrics and album credits. No second picture of EC, like in the CD. With four tracks a side, I think i'm already enjoying this better than listening to National Ransom on my Ipod all the way ...

Re: Costello on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Nov. 3 '10

This was weird. When he first came out, he sat in while yet another bickering conversation about last night's election continued, he looked so uncomfortable and out of place. Then they asked him a stupid question and he just backed away from the corner they put him in and gave non answer, which was ...

Yeah, that was great. The bonus song is Jimmy Standing in the Rain. Great performance. I can never get tired of this song.

Re: where is my download of LP???

My vinyl copy has shipped. In fact it's out for delivery today according to the USPS tracking. There is one odd thing though. If you're using the email receipt from Elvis Costello.com, the tracking information won't show up. The only way I found out that the album was being shipped and on its way wa...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

Here's a pretty thorough and positive review of National Ransom. http://thehurstreview.wordpress.com/2010/10/27/elvis-costello-national-ransom/ Excerpt: I’ll make the argument that National Ransom– album #33, but who’s counting?– is his most seamless and sophisticated assimilation of American musics...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

I find it interesting that these reviewers are all singling out a different track as a standout, as if they only had time to listen to one track properly before writing their piece. Yeah, these reviews are funny. I especially like the following from the News Ok review: "You Hung the Moon"...

The one that sounds like Sharpest Thorn (I can't remember what it's called). Another New Orleans funeral procession, but about what sounds like an unrequited love relationship. Also, for gossips, sounds like it may mirror his meeting with Diana - isn't there a line about 'I met her, gave her advice...

just listening to the streaming of the songs on colbert nation. the vocal of you hung the moon, now that i can hear it more clearly, is unbelievable, controlled yet full of deep deep feeling. the song structure etc., could make it almost a North song, but i found that those songs were often sung ra...

Re: Yes, it's early, but NR's greatest song is:

Stations of the Cross - It's one of those that I keep listening to over and over. I love the spare arrangement and Elvis' vocals. Dr. Watson could be the second greatest. It really surprised me. I didn't think much of it when I heard the few live versions circulating but I love the way it is perform...

Agh, I've already ordered my CD from play.com. Now it turns out I can get the CD and a digital EP from nationalransom.com! Who knew this was going to happen?! I'm going to wait until I have the proper release before posting a complete opinion; my copy also had skips in Slow Drag and All These Strangers. I will say that, having listened to it several times, this album is not really doing it for me. I love some of the songs- Stations of the Cross is amazing...

I guess I'll be the only one from the board who will be at the show. I'm sitting in the 8th or seventh row. The closest I've ever been. Needless to say I'm pretty excited. I've planned the trip so I hit a few record stores on the way. Can't wait.

Re: Elvis sings on soundtrack "The Invention of Lying"

I just watched it today and was surprised by EC's contribution to the soundtrack, it took me a few seconds to figure out that it was him. I liked the song, haven't heard the Cat Stevens version. The movie was ok. The heartfelt moments tend to get a little too sappy but the part where Gervais' charac...

Re: EC & Brodsky Quartet - Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 27 April

There's a good audience recording of this show on Dime: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=251293 The music sounds good and you definitely hear all of the Brodskys and Elvis. The main drawback is that sometimes it's hard to hear EC talk in between songs and if you turn on the volume t...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I'm not a big decemberist fan, I liked Picaresque and Colin Meloy's live solo album, but this record is definitely interesting. A few songs really stand out- won't want for love, The Hazards of Love 2, The wanting comes in waves, Isn't it a lovely night, The rake's song but I don't think it works as...
