Re: "Suffering Face"

Does anyone else consider this one of the most absolutely gorgeous songs EC has ever written? There's nothing more for me to fully agree to your appraisal, the_platypus, it's such a perfect song, that puts it among some of his best ever. In its simplicity it's actually a bit uncommon for an EC song...

Re: "This isn't confession. This is pop music" re:Brutal You

But I love Science Fiction Twin. That is one of those EC songs where the lines just seem to inject themselves right into my brain, to create sing-along Elvis. There’s a lot of EC in this song: the part about filling up his purse dictating verse I think is a direct reference to his having gone to It...

Re: In praise of Momofuku

I'll just pipe in here to say that nobody should ever apologlize for offering opinions, even strong opinions. I do tire of the whole idea that we are supposed to preface all our remarks with some self-effacing redundancy, like 'this is only my opinion...' blah blah blah. Anyone who feels personally...

Re: In praise of Momofuku

"Song with Rose" stuns me every time I hear it.... I' m glad I'm not the only one who is thrilled by the beauty of this ever-evolving nearly never-ending melody! It is consistently funny how posters take a comment obviously given as only a personal opinion and then personalize it as if th...

Great work you did, alexv, thanks a lot, in my mind it made me sing through every song you listed of GH and I would even add Secondary Modern and Clowntime is over to the classic's list. Still, personally I do relate more to MLAR, easy understandable for my emotions linked to it while hearing it in ...

Re: In praise of Momofuku

There are no country songs in this album. I guess you're referring to "Song With Rose" and "Pardon Me Madam..." which I find really beautiful and not more or less derivative than anything else in the record. Couldn't agree more! I really wonder how one can dismiss these songs wi...

Re: "In time we can turn these obsessions into careers"MLAR2

It’s an unpleasant experience being confronted with other’s dismissal of personal treasures, like for instance RECORDS, all the more when the artist, THE MAN HIMSELF, is the one with the harshest verdict on his own works. And with Elvis and me, this happened even twice, first with the most brutal of...

Re: Re-examination of "Punch the Clock"

Talking about Taramasalata , it’s time to indulge a bit in PTC and the falling in love with Elvis’ music to which it led to. Being 16 years old then, I remember being first bewildered, than stunned and finally fascinated by that then completely-new-to-my ears rush of niagara falls-like syllables, ut...

Re: Astonished [Still]!

Great to open this thread by you, Christopher, in honor and praise of TJL, a record that, in my own EC canon, ranks among his best and moreover, as you pointed out so precisely, is one more proof of his complete dedication to music, with a nearly self-offensive tendency to take no prisoners and just...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

One Bell Ringing to me is once more one of these Elvis songs that relly make the difference, that lend this awesome NR- collection of marvellous tunes that FINAL gemstone that makes the treasure so much more valuable. This hushed quiet greatness in which he is delivering the words, with that brass a...

Re: Elvis Costello in Montreux on July 13

Sorry for me being a bit late with my concert review, summer is just too wonderful right now to spend too much time on the computer... It seems that I have been the only one of our board to show up at that Diana/Elvis-family package, with what the couple seem to enjoy their European summer of 2010. ...

Re: Elvis Costello in Montreux on July 13

I will be there too, with a bit mixed expectations for fearing a too tight concert schedule in Montreux to really get going, although I am more optimistic now since I saw that Elvis is following his wife and not the other way round as I had expected. I've got a ticket in the standing section, so we ...

Re: New Album(s) Being Recorded in Nashville

I'm with you 3, the_playtypus, bronxapostle and pophead2k I'm happy with nearly everything EC has done and I'd be happy with another SP&S as well (I'm surprised that even EC fans don't seem to be able to JUST LISTEN to the songs of that record without fuzzing around of that "concept album&q...

I can see from reading this board that my opinions about EC's music vary pretty sharply from the norm. ... I can't really explain why I've drawn such different conclusions. Re: Best EC Album of the Past 10 years

alexv, man you really seem to take it personally, with the distinct lives of our hero, which is absolutely the right attitude , taking it personally is the most important when it comes to music, it's about our love for it and its counterpart, being disappointed if the love doesn't stand every test.....

Hi cwr I can see the parallel you draw between "Still too soon to know" and "My three sons" (though I find the latter one very enjoyable for its simplicity and honesty), but I can't place "45" in the same line, for it is way too playful and associative with its playing ...

"Song for Rose" is such a wonderful song, with a melody floating easily like a sailboat in the quiet waters of a calm sea, I only wished this song would go on forever... and words full of poetry. Am I wrong or is this about the years of suspended longing and loving with Cait? Having in min...

Great to read something other than the usual canon praising the first 3 or 4 records as all time best, though undoubtedly they really were something unique. But for myself being one who got into Elvis with PTC and still thinking that "Everyday I write the book" ist one of the most well-cra...
