Dreams?

Last night, when I was finally able to go to bed after not sleeping for 37 hours due to a big going-away party and then roaming around airports and standing in queues and taking long flights, I had a dream that EC recorded another morose jazz album like "North", except it contained an upbe...

Re: don't bother me

I reckon if there's a certain tentative feel to this performance it's because it's not his own song, and it was his first ever live performance of it.

Re: "Suffering Face"

Hello Costello-friends. I got drunk and wrote a very disjointed post about this gorgeous song on my blog. you can read it here if you're into that sort of thing: http://jorgefarah.com/2011/12/18/bedhead-melodies-2-elvis-costello-suffering-face/ My reply is a bit late but what was true in the old ye...

Re: "Suffering Face"

I found this... peculiar interpretation on Songmeanings.net. "Clearly this song is about a father who had for some time been carrying on a somewhat (up for debate, you know?) -consensual incestuous relationship with his daughter, whom he is preparing to "give away" to her fiancé on he...

Re: Cuarteto Granada perform The Juliet Letters

This clip of their performance of "I Almost Had A Weakness", appears to be from the Echegaray show in November. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEd5rp-5QyY The vocalist has chosen to sing only the third and final verse, which is not a bad thing as I prefer the playing on this to the singin...

Yup, it's like he rediscovered fingerpicking and open tunings. That guitar itself also sounds great, very rich sound.

Re: Spike... The height of Elvis' ?

Platy, I think you're wrong if you think the narrator of 'This Town' is espousing a world view that Elvis thinks is a good thing. The whole song is an attack on shallow people and materialistic, self-serving values - Elvis seems to be observing that kind of culture rather than endorsing it. Oh, tha...

Re: Spike... The height of Elvis' ?

I like Spike for its dazzling eclecticism, its rich sounds, cleverly crafted songs and great performances. But, "Baby Plays Around" aside, it feels kind of cold and disconnected; I feel like it lacks a heart, a strong emotional core. It's near the bottom of my list of favorite EC albums. A...

Re: Elvis,Marian McPartland docu., DVD now available

Have been listening to the Piano Jazz cd with the two of them today- you can tell there exists a rapport between the two as the conversations intersperse between the songs- his performances of "Gloomy Sunday" and "The Very Thought of You" are most revealing. Will have to look fo...

Re: Beyond Belief (Give & Take Remix)

This really is fun to listen to. Could you imagine if this had been the released track? Separately panned out vocal tracks singing different melodies, with only a few overlapping lyrics? It'd be impossible to replicate live but I think it would've been a pretty cool album track. Can this be download...

Re: What live versions of songs do you prefer to the studio

While Steve is fantastic on the Hollywood High version of AWH, I disagree about EC's singing; I feel like it really captures a lot of what was annoying about his performances back then. Super-nasal, strained and with a strangled vibrato that can't hold up through the entire song and sometimes lands ...

I believe that quote is about freedom of expression, which I am very much in favor of. I will never, however, fundamentally "respect" hating others because of how they were born; though I won't dispute their right to express their beliefs, racists, homophobes and bigots of any kind do not ...
