Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

Let's say that the CD is 20 dollars-- that's high-end for a single disc, but let's go with 20. Let's put the DVD at the high end of Criterion Collection releases, at 40 bucks. Now we're up to 60. Let's say that the vinyl is 30-- no, let's make it 40, fuck it! Now we're at... a hundred dollars. Whic...

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why

Playboy to a Man is soooo bad..... Thank you! I can't believe no one mentioned this one until now. It's the one I always skip whenever I listen to MLAR. Definitely my least favorite. Eisenhower Blues is bad but I don't mind it as much. I haven't listened to Punch the Clock as often as the ot...

Sweet!

I was wondering if he was gonna reschedule those shows before the European dates. That's so great. Melbourne is a bit closer than Orlando so maybe I can swing three of the Florida shows. This news made my day!

Re: What are you listening to right now?

St. Vincent live on NPR. She sounds amazing and I love her new album. I know she's been doing a cover of the Pop Group's "She's beyond good and evil" so I'm looking forward to hear a good live version of that. It's already halfway through but they always archive them. Worth a listen. Here'...

Re: Tom Waits- "Bad As Me"

Have spent the last few days with the 'deluxe' edition- have to love the book format which gives it a weighty feel. Initial reactions are moderate to lukewarm. He has done better. He is in danger of becoming a caricature of himself as a writer. Too many of the lyrics rely on the trope of opposites-...

Elvis Costello - 1984-04-15 New York

Just saw that somebody reposted this excellent recording from 1984 on DIME. Not sure if anyone had posted about before but I'm listening to it now and cannot believe how great it sounds. If you've heard the Goodbye Cruel World Bonus Disc and were in awe of the raw solo performances featured there, t...

Re: Tom Waits- "Bad As Me"

I been listening to it for the past couple of weeks and I have to say it will probably go down as one of his best albums ever. Real Gone had some gems in it but it was a difficult one to enjoy. This one is short, enjoyable and has as much emotional impact as his earlier albums. I've particularly enj...

Re: songs Elvis should retire (if he hasn't already)

So it's not clear if EC already has given up on Party Girl as well, in the case of AF. I saw him play it in July '94 at the RAH: http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/index.php/Concert_1994-07-05 I recall he said they hadn't tried it in a long time as it was very hard to pull off live. I seem to recal...

This version of Everyday I Write the Book you're talking about is like this one here? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acH7hanhcL8 I think this is more like it: http://vimeo.com/30414384 Much slower version Thanks Doc, that's exactly the version that I was thinking of. Re: Recent CD Purchases

I'm keen to hear St Vincent too (I was very impressed indeed by her two song contribution to the 'Rain Dogs Revisited' show I saw this summer, Steve Nieve et al). She was a bit like current hot UK ticket Anna Calvi, slashing at her Fender and coming over as scary but engaging. Loved it. I love the ...

Re: songs Elvis should retire (if he hasn't already)

I thought The Delivery Man and Everyday I Write the Book were amazing during the Sugarcanes tour. The Delivery Man was a much more captivating performance than the original. Everyday was breathtaking, completely different and beautifully enhanced by the sugarcanes' harmony vocals. When I last saw hi...

$170. That makes sense. Still hope there might be a stand alone option for just a bare bones cd/dvd set.

Elusive Disc still has at $339

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

I don't think you can reasonably compare the U2 and Bowie packages to Costello's set. Economy of scale. Because Costello is, at this point, a cult musician, he's probably selling a minuscule fraction of what U2, Bowie or Pixies are of their sets. You buy in bulk, you get cheaper product, and there ...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

Jardine, I totally agree with you. It's completely ridiculously overpriced. What pisses me off is that for $349 all you get is ONE cd, ONE dvd and ONE 10 inch. Even with the book, poster, autograph and spinning wheel, it still doesn't seem like it's worth that much. The indignation comes from the fa...

Re: "Letter of Thanks" documentary

I never saw it as mean-spirited. To me it always seemed like EC was struggling with how to reply to the letter, how to put himself in a position he's never been in and how could he even attempt to console her. I also don't think there's a real anti-war message in the song, it simply reporting what o...

Re: Mobile Fidelity to re-release Get Happy

◦Dutch White Label F-Beat Records pressing (manufactured by WEA) WEA 58114—Bass on "Love for Tender" is not as full bodied as the UK, but it is still very distinct. Quiet pressing. Handclaps come across nicely. Some sibilance on the vocals on "High Fidelity." I think this is the...

Spotify has finally launched in the U.S. and I'm loving it. I've been looking forward to it after years of reading/hearing about from those overseas. I'm amazed at the wealth of songs it features, lots of new releases and rarities. Already have playlists filled with hundreds of tracks and it's my fi...
