Re: books, books, books
Yes- the "great, late dead writers club" -not trying to be sexist but am hard pressed to come up with a contemporary female novelist to my top three- I enjoy Cynthia Ozick or Joan Didion-but do not consider them strong fiction writers- enjoy more their non-fiction. Pleasantly surprised whe...

Re: books, books, books
I love amongst many things for both TP and PR-the willingness and joy in being just purely scatalogical-witness Pynchon's strong argument quoted in David Hadjdu's "Positively 4th Street" where he tries to chastise Farina for allowing his editor to tone out the "ribald" word game ...

As it is my birthday and I want to relax with a slice of flourless cake with halva/honey filling prepared by the sainted spouse-have the first disc of Dylan's Tell Tale Signs on and have Neil's Out on the Weekend cued up for a spin with the spouse-let me reply- greatly admire Pynchon!!!!!!!he is in ...

I eagerly have anticipated this one since it was first announced- like you have been unable to finish "Against The Day"-have tried slogging through four different times-the pulp noir aspects of this one intrigue me-will be fun to see what he does with this genre.

I think his pose reads "Rock & Roll"-the iconic mimicing of Buddy Holly complete with black horn rimed glasses-go one further and you have Holly's progeny in Hamburg complete with rolled jeans-the music even mirrors the simple elegance of Holly's-sadly I was walking around that time wi...

Re: Happy Anniversay- My Aim Is True
Yes "Get Happy" was the album-"My Aim Is True" had to grow on me- but I remember being impressed by his ability to jump from genre to genre, to rock, and his distaste for English Facisim-I am not so quick to disparage so called "prog rock"-although I remember being musi...

Re: Recently viewed films
Did not enjoy the movie Revolutionary Road as much when we saw it in the movie house- thought some of the acting was fine-would highly recommend the book-one of my personal favorites and I think the best treatment of the damage men and women can do to one another since Anna Karinina. Would vote high...

Yes- a grand old store in which I used to purchase many albums back when they were vinyl-now sadly am left in this area with just Best Buy or Target-and there is no guarantee that you will find what you are looking for either-not even certain that if it was today they would even carry EC-not commerc...

Happy Anniversay- My Aim Is True
Hard to believe 32 years to the date that "My Aim Is True" was introduced in the United States. Still remember purchasing it at Caldors for the grand sum of $4.99 on sale that day-the first of many to come after that. May there be many more such purchases of future EC albums. Happy Anniver...

As to photos I am more taken with the cover of "Soviet Kitsch"-but still like those legs coming out of the black keys.

Re: best ballad?
I want to go at this seriously as I think you have listed the one song that is clearly EC's best- the one that puts him in the canon of the great American Songbook- that is "Almost Blue"- that is if you mean by ballad a song of romantic or sentimental nature and not an Appallacian folk son...

Re: elvis's lines that you like\dislike the most.
Have to agree with AlexV regarding the near futility of this exercise and am, at the same time, trying to get the image of Steve Allen reciting "My Generation" deadpan from my head, as I remember the original bit-to tear an individual line from a song is dangerous-it loses its context and ...

Re: The Open/Tom Watson
As Tom stood over his final putt on the 18th and needing only par to win outright and as the putt left his blade I was crest fallen when I saw it start to veer away from the cup-I am happy for Cink- he did not steal it, he won it outright in the playoff making better shots than a spent Watson-and To...

Thank you for sharing this-now my daughters can see what they missed-brought back a quick memory-Conor's outfit-had forgotten how fetching- a mix of Dylan or Parsons in the polka dotted silk shirt with Audrey Hepburn's wide brim hat-all he needed was the silk scarf and he would mirror pictures of Pa...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
My daughter adores her-purchsed the new one with bonus material for her for her birthday earlier this month- have listened to it several times and it stays with you-definitely agree it has received more airplays than SP&P in this household- strong piano playing and a quirky- almost childlike sin...

The Open/Tom Watson
Am about to hunker down and enjoy this event-not a real sportsman but do enjoy Baseball-but this is the one sports event I watch consistently year in year out- not sure if golf is a sport rather than a very distinct skill mastered by a few people-but I am always drawn to this one event because of th...

Cannot add much to your insightful comments-too found it a very enjoyable experience with my wife. When you can walk to a concert like this it is fun in your backyard. I may enjoy Oberst but the quality of the two bands was more than evident- where Oberst's band's sound was basicly loud and louder s...

Re: elvis's lines that you like\dislike the most.
You misread me I believe- the whole point is the irony-I have always read it as EC winking at himself as well-I love what I believe is a self directed critique-that is the whole point of irony-employing ironic contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. It is hypocritical if he is not winking at hi...

Costello quoting Lennon- and still pure hypocrisy from both of them. Only a fav for me if you appreciate the irony, both general and self directed I hope.
