Re: In praise of Momofuku
With the exception of IB and NR (which are anal-retentive masterpieces), my favorite EC albums, more often than not, tend to be the ones that he just sort of bangs out and doesn't seem to fuss over too much. MOMOFUKU is definitely one of these "quickies", and I love it. "Song with Ros...

Re: "In time we can turn these obsessions into careers"MLAR2
MLAR is just wrong on every level: weak songs, overwrought production, bad hair, weird beard, stupid hat. And then there's "Broken" -- grounds for divorce right there. See ya, Cait -- don't let that door hit you in the ass....

Re: Request: Wendy James demos: Now Aint The Time For Your T
Sorry, no demos -- but your post made me revisit NATTFYT, and I'm glad I did. I think it's a nice, albeit slight, piece of work -- and I compare it favorably against a stuffy, overripe contemporary like MLAR....

Re: Elvis Costello retires from making albums....
I couldn't disagree more with that. I think Dylan's entire career has been a reaction to public perception of him and his work. A skinny Jewish kid named Rob Zimmerman from Hibbing, Minnesota, reinvents himself as a New York folk singer with a balderdash biography about him being a kid who ran away...

Re: Elvis Costello retires from making albums....
I think EC should take a page from Dylan's playbook and just stop fucking caring about an album's critical or popular reception. It's obvious that Dylan, whether he's putting out masterful things like "Love & Theft" or complete nonsense like "Christmas in the Heart", just cou...

Re: What the story behind ATUB (Entire album) ?
An EC LP that's "overwrought and overwritten"? That's like saying the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is "too busy"! :P All kidding aside, ATUB is way up there on my EC list -- top 3 or 4 easily. The lazy comparison is with IB, of course, but I've always thought of it as perhaps th...

another listen to the first half. 3 things 1. jimmie still reminds me of early ellington, east st. louis toodle-oo almost referenced by name, but also that pulsing beat, and in the brass, black and tan fantasy. and he mentioned his grandfather's sea voyages as a musician and having a picture of ell...

Re: Double Albums
the concept of a "double album" no longer applies, and hasn't for years -- album length (or 45rpm song length, etc.) has always been dictated primarily by format. if CDs would have been around in 1966, "Revolver" would've been an hour long, and the white album would've run nearly...
