I'm not a Pink Floyd fan, so thought Dave Gilmour was a bit boring. He also can't sing, which is a problem. I don't find guitar solos impressing - another reason to be turned off by him. I did like Paul Simon, especially his second song. I missed his third song - a pity, especially if it was the bes...

mood swung, I am too listening to Nick Lowe. Lately I've Let Things Slide, from the Convincer, which I got this morning. I'm on a bit of a Lowe mission. I can't afford any of his earlier "classic" albums, so I ordered Rockpile, The Convincer, Dig My Mood and The Impossible Bird. Rockpile i...

Google trends

I've not idea if you've seen this site before, but it's certainly interesting. It monitors who's searching for what on google. Here are the results for Elvis Costello: http://www.google.com/trends?q=elvis+costello I wouldn't have bet on those top three countries either! Argentina, the mind boggles.....

 How true. I've not preordered the CD yet. I'm waiting til I find a suitable Father's Day present to order alongside it, so that I get free delivery. I am looking forward to the Later show on Friday. I'm watching it with a couple of friends I've converted to Costello. I wonder what they'll thin...

Playing through the 30 second samples, I'm quietly optimistic about this album. I'm glad "All These Things" finally found it's way on an album, I loved his version on the Blood and Chocolate bonus disc, and this one seems just as good. Perhaps a couple of badly chosed covers, but I like th...

Same here. I've only ever seen the album on CD, and I cannot imagine the album going any other way. Get Happy!! with "I Can't Stand Up" opening would be, for me, like starting to read a book 100 pages through. I know it's a single, and it is like Motown, but wasn't "Love For Tender&qu...

if you get any of the Ryko ones, get "Almost Blue". There's live versions of "He's Got You" and "Cry Cry Cry" worth checking out. If you like EC and the A's up-tempo live take on country songs in the Rhino reissue, you ought to hear these. If you can pick AB up cheaply,...

I'm beginning to like Battered Old Bird, now that I'm a little older, more patient, and realise that some good songs last longer than three minutes. I think it was verbal gymnastics who mentioned "Baby Pictures". I'm not familiar with the other version you were talking about, but I LOVE th...

Perhaps The Juliet Letters and Painted From Memory are so distinctive because they are collaborations. Certainly the Brodskys had a lot of input into the lyrics on the album, which explains why the lyrics aren't "Costello-ised". And Elvis definitely conceded to the Bacharach style of songw...

I agree with that one. I don't like the random grunts and whoops of the Fairfield Four. Ruins a good song... My random thought at the mo: when Davey Farragher sings backing vocals for EC, does he actually sing whole words? It always sounds like he's singing half formed syllables that have a passing ...

I bought "Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe" from a charity shop for £2.99 yesterday. I was rather excited; I've tried to find his stuff for ages, but it's not in music shops. Also, his CDs are rather expensive on Amazon. But I've bought it, played it, and it's growing on me.

Oldham. The name "Oldham Athletic" goes back to 1899. Wigan can only manage a pithy 1932. They stole our nickname. Scoundrels!

Aye, in the Big Wheel. Something about it being a-top-of-the-morning-Dublin accent in Ireland, Cockney, Scouse etc. I haven't got the book with me, so can't give an exact quote. I think Elvis still speaks with a faint Scouse twang today, though when he talks it's a bit of a non-accent.

Hmmm...lots to think about! I do like Suffering Face - the singing and playing is marvellous. Secondary Modern gets my vote as well, though it is on Get Happy!!, a record which could only be more perfect if it helped bring about world peace and an end to suffering. Maybe it already has... Back in the real world, Latics continue their ascent into footballing marvellous with a 4-1 thumping at Bradford. Away. 2 points off 6th place. I believe "Get in" is the usual phrase in circumstances like this.
