Re: Hey Bulldog

Thanks a lot for the link Charlie, nice to hear but I can't say that Elvis added anything the song which is usually, and indeed EC's own, definition of a good cover - though I'm sure I'd feel differently if I'd been there!

Re: The Costello Show Live Project

God, I saw that Robert Wyatt Meltdown, Paul B. He went a bit bananas - using two mics at a time, going all Thomas Dolby at one point. I do remember storming versions of No Wonder, Alibi and 45 - and he introduced the new Spooky Girlfriend, too, I recall, and Dust. I love Dust, actually! Great lyric...

Re: The Costello Show Live Project

I'm really looking forward to some of the releases we might get out of this project, there's so much great stuff from so many different tours: the first solo shows (which were in the US I think, I heard a boot ages ago), later Attractions shows, the 90s reunion shows, more Meltdown stuff (the collab...

Re: Elvis Costello: Stand-up comedian?

I've heard him tell so many funny stories live I'd have to think hard to remember and choose but the one on a recording that makes me smile the most is his introduction to Blame It On Cain at the My Aim Is True anniversary show (there was a link to MP3s of it a while ago here). Hilarious ramble abou...

Re: Lyrics open to interpretation...

The song always seemed to me to be about the brutalizing machismo that a lot of males are brought up to have – not a totally unfamiliar theme in Elvis’s work! – mixed up with his own experiences of drugs and fame at the time. It’s complex stuff, I remember Elvis in the 90s saying even he didn’t know...

Re: New London date - Barbican 23/04/2009

Great show. I've quibbles here and there but I took a non hardcore fan and they loved it. Agree with others here that the rearranged older songs didn't all work. Real issue is that Elvis's voice can in no way match the incredible dexterity of the quartet and a little too often he sang as though he h...

Glad you're enjoying it. Easily done: even 6 a side, so Stella Hurt kicks off side 2. Thanks a lot Mr Westinghouse. I was posting on Word Magazine's site only last night about how I miss the 2 act play that was the vinyl LP. http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/podcast-ahoy That page also has a ra...

Re: Momofuku Poll #2 - Whaddya think?

Only just got it, guilty iTunes downloader I. I like the 'LP' - a lot. It's beautifully sequenced. The sound is gorgeously raw, he seems to keep returning to the blistered beauty of Blood and Chocolate more than anything else in recent years. The vocal harmonies add a lot, not just a multitracked ch...

It does look unlikely, but Elvis does feature in a TV documentary about Emmylou Harris, which is being shown alongside a documentary about Gram himself. They're being shown on BBC4 in several weekends time.

London's Brilliant Parade at 62, well, better not tell Ken Livingston - and as for God's Comic 'bubbling under' at 93, frankly I was about to resign in protest. Persoanal faves aside, does the fact that our top 50 is heavily weighted towards the earlier parts of his career mean collectively we don't...

Wow, a few score draws, a few upsets. From a quick study it'd seem our top 50 draws very heavily on pre Spike material. While the 50 comprises mainly songs you'd hope or expect to see up there, Brutal Youth and beyond only gets around 4 placings. Surely plently of riches from later years easily rate...

I agree with Blue Chair, these things are usually about as revealing as the Beatles Anthology...that is, er, not a lot. However, EC does have a very special way with words, but a bit early for the memoirs isn't it?

At the Albert Hall during the Lonely World tour someone up in the gods kept shouting out for Tramp the Dirt Down. Elvis replied he wasn't going to play it and the guy shouted 'That's so fucking hypocritical - you wrote that song'. It was getting a bit heated, the place went quiet, very tense. Elvis ...
