Re: Help add text to the Costello wiki site

What...like this? Until June of last year, Elvis Costello was a computer analyst in Acton, England. Now he’s s a rising star in what is generally known as “punk rock” but which, at least philosophically, is closer to “Prufrock”. Shall I eat a peach? Shall I sing a hard-as-nails rock song? The punk t...

Good grief! Marc Ribot's guitar playing on this is simply stunning. The pianist ain't too bad either.

Re: Elvis/The Imposters, Bristol, May 22 2012

I enjoyed it (of course I did) even though I thought the whole "Spinning Songbook" idea, apart from being something that has been done before, would be too gimmicky and would drag the show down somewhat. It didn't. To be honest I've never seen Elvis looking so relaxed in front of an audien...

Re: Relatively Insignificant EC Stuff. . .

I happened to stumble across a program broadcast on the Beeb last night (14th) in which comedienne Jo Brand reflected on the art and history of kissing which, with alarming originality was called "Jo Brand on kissing". Anyway, there was this scene in which Brand was seen chasing a man much...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

I'm glad you asked! It's a bit of musical trainspotting actually and, once again, as the memory continues to fade, it's not from "Brutal Youth" but "All This Useless Beauty". There is a guitar "motif" on the fade-out to, if my memory serves me well, "It's Time"...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

Likewise, Jesse Winchester wrote Third Rate Romance, but I believe the Amazing Rythym Aces might have beat them to the recording studio with it. Here I am, responding to a post that's 3 years old! Winchester recorded it first. It was included on his 1974 album "Learn To Love It". Th...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

By the way, I'll mention it here but I haven't seen anybody else comment on this (they probably have). Are you aware of the tip of the hat to Television on "Brutal Youth"? I'm probably thinking that I've discovered some rare jewel of EC information that EVERYBODY already knows about. Serve...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

Ooh I do love a challenge....especially a musical one. But, the quality of this file does not give much away does it?? I don't know what it is, but I bet it's not an ad-lib. If you could jot down the lyrics we might have a fighting chance.

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

I have "Denomination Blues" and the chorus of that song includes the lines "But you'd gotta have Jesus, and I tell you that's all" I'm sure Phillips refers to "lifting up" in this song too. I put 2 & 2 together.....and got it wrong. A quick Wikipedia search reveals ...

Re: Elvis Costello's Record Collection

By the by, I think you will find that the Washington Phillips track you have called, "Lift Him Up and that's all" on Volume 43 is actually called "Denomination Blues".

Re: Elvis on Live Aid DVD/Andy Kershaw bio.
Andy ( the true heir to John Peel's throne) used to be a big Elvis fan. Colin Top Balcony
I've read his biography and like John it didn't take me that long as it's a cracking read. By the way, Andy has not fallen out of love with all things Elvis as he refers ...

Re: Mad About The Wrong Boy

I was under the impression that the album was recorded sometime around August/September 1979 when Elvis was producing the debut album by The Specials, but I might be wrong. Would make sense particularly with Elvis pre-occupied elsewhere.

Re: Costello Bootleg query

Actually, I did some research on this very forum and discovered that you are of course absolutely right. Still not sure as to where the tracks come from but I do have a theory that I may decide to post on the thread that mentions this record.

Thanks for your reply.

Costello Bootleg query

Hi guys and gals. Don't normally spend too much time on here but I know that you lot are a friendly and very knowledgeable bunch so here's my query. I have a Costello b**tleg with no title but which includes, in superb quality, a series of items from EC's early career. Some are recognisable in so mu...

CostelloNews.com archive

Hi there!

Does anyone know how I can access the Costello.News Archive? I am referring specifically to the "Trainspotters" section for the period October 2002 to March 2003. The links to these pages do not appear to work anymore.

Ta!

"Hummmm, did it ever dawn on you that maybe she wore the glasses first?" Actually, having seen the 2nd photograph (the one with Lowe & Brooker) it becomes obvious that she DID wear glasses so I guess my little theory (and that's all it was) was wrong. As for enquiring as to her whereab...

Mary Burgoyne

Hello one and all. I'm new to the forum though I have been a part of the Costello Mailing list for many years, mainly as a casual observer. So as an introduction I thought I'd post a question that I asked on the Mailing list which still remains unanswered. Mary Burgoyne. Does anyone know what happen...
