Re: Cardiff thursday 24 June

Yes, Sulky, you're right - the first attempt to get the crowd singing was met with embarrassment, but as soon a we were cajoled by our Elv, everyone really went for it! I thought it was a rapturous reception. Didn't realise you were going, Sulky! Woulda hooked up for a beer! How do you feel it compa...

Re: Cardiff thursday 24 June

Eh? That Kathryn Williams Western Mail article was bizarre! The audience were whooping and cheering after every number, and he got a standing ovation, but she seems to imply he didn't manage, quite, to connect! Failed to whip up the crowd enough to sing along? What about the singalongs in Radio Swee...

Re: Cardiff thursday 24 June

Of course! Girl's Talk (done in the Dave Edmunds style - maybe done because he was in Cardiff - I believe Edmunds was born in the Welsh capital) and Black and White World - which I've never, ever heard him do before! Done slowly and tenderly, as in the Ten Bloody Marys version.

I just heard Hope live in Cardiff, for the first time. I almost burst into tears. It's one of the best things he's ever done - one of the best live performances I've ever seen him give. I hope.... it becomes a standard, a late-career hit. We can but - yes, you guessed it - hope.

Re: Cardiff thursday 24 June

Great gig - I took my parents, and they loved it too. I'm quite amazed to be still knocked out by Elvis, so many years into my fandom. He really does blow me away with what a great performer he is. He's STILL got it after all these years. His voice was as powerful as I've ever heard it, his attack, ...

Re: Oof! There might be puzzled calls from the audience!

Ticketmaster left a message on my phone today, and in my email inbox, telling me that Elvis won't be with the Sugarcanes. Clearly someone's kicked them up the bottom. Cool!

Re: Elvis's newest creative furrow, lyrically speaking...

Poor Deportee - beautifully put. I agree that Elvis's lyrics have become amazingly rich and dense in the past ten years - I've been knocked sideways by some of his recent stuff - the swirling kaleidoscope of images piled into short songs are, to me, evidence of a purple patch in the best sense - I t...

Oof! There might be puzzled calls from the audience!

I booked my ticket for the Cardiff show, and as I said, Ticketmaster said it was with the Sugarcanes. I now realise that it isn't with them, which is fine. But I just got a reminder email from them about the gig on Thurs - and I find when clicking through that they're STILL announcing ALL the dates ...

Hi Jeremy, If you're in the South Bank area a lot, for evening shows at the Festival Hall Meltdown, then catch a movie matinee at the BFI - the British Film Institute Theatre (also known as the National Film Theatre) under Waterloo Bridge http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/bfi_southbank Also, just along ...

Re: Cardiff thursday 24 June

It's definitely solo, after initial confusion. However, having booked thinking it was the Sugarcanes, I'm in no way disappointed. Elvis solo, for me, is something pretty special - you, his voice, and a guitar is an incredibly potent mix. I've been waiting for a solo gig for years, and I'm actually g...

Hi Sheeptothe...

You mentioned an ad in the paper for the Elvis tour - I know it's geeky, but what was the imagery used? Pomp & Pout tour? Is this to coincide with the new Best Of? Just curious! Scan, anyone?

Glad 'In Another Room' is on there - always thought it's one of his best later cuts. Impatience - fab! Had to be included! Tart, too, I've always loved - though I'm surprised the amazing Doll Revolution isn't on there. No idea how this will go down - it hasn't been given the subtitle 'Best of', whic...

Re: Elvis to Perform at McCartney White House Tribute

Please God, let the Elvis version of Penny Lane appear on YouTube as soon as possible. The song's open-hearted cheeriness would be a rare mood for Elvis - although, thinking about it, he's done his own Penny Lane - that wistfully nostalgic masterpiece, London's Brilliant Parade.

I absolutely love 'Impatience'! Yep, agreed - one of the best tracks of the past ten years... sod it, one of the best tracks of his entire career! Beautiful production, melody, arrangement - the whole thing is thrilling.

Re: New version of Elviscostello.com

Interesting comments about what the site 'should' be etc., but really, I think the main thing is that Elvis keeps writing great songs, releasing them, and performing. He does all this, so I think all the moans about the website not giving fans what they want is a little harsh. As long as he releases...

Re: New version of Elviscostello.com

Great site, Elvis! Well done! Great fun, sense of humour, and good tasters of the tracks. The 'Purchase' engine doesn't work properly however - when you're in that section and you hit the 'Music' link, it says 'There are no products matching the selection' - something patently not true. That said, i...

These track listings sound reasonable - the singles, basically, with some others to fill, and possibly a bonus unreleased track to get us, the fans who already have all the stuff, to buy it.

Re: Hip-O Records will release Pomp & Pout by Elvis on June

Couldn't it just be the new album? The UK tour is just before. 'Almost Blue' album was called 'Almost Blue' without that track on it. I dunno - could be, In these days of downloads, can't quite understand the sense in any CD greatest hits being called anything other that The Best of Elvis Costello -...

Hmmm - I think you're right - the official site says very specifically solo, so perhaps he is! FIne by me - just that amazingly expressive, nuanced, dramatic voice, echoing out into the auditorium, with just a guitar for accompaniment. Can't wait!

My Ticketmaster booking says he's with the Sugarcanes, even though the St David's Hall website doesn't mention them on their page. I'm happy with either - solo Elvis is always fine by me!

No, he's with the Sugarcanes in Cardiff according to my Ticketmaster info, and I presume he is for all dates. That early report was probably wrong, and you can bet he'll be Meltdowning. You never know - he could be with Macca too.

I presume this is either with the Imposters or the Sugarcanes, though even if it isn't I'll be happy to see him solo!
