Re: books, books, books

Just finished Destiny of the Republic , about the assassination of President Garfield. Fascinating history and interesting to read in the middle of our current political campaign. I have to think that had he survived the gunshot wound that killed him, Garfield would have gone on to become one of the...

Not too shabby after one round. Need Roo-nay!!! to get me some points this weekend. Another couple of goals from Ivanovic plus a clean sheet would be nice too.

Starting on Empire of the Summer Moon , about the bloody wars between the US Army and the Comanche tribe in Texas and the Southwest in the mid-19th century. Fascinating stuff so far, and a lot I didn't know - such as the fact that most Indian tribes fought on foot, not on horseback. The Comanches w...

Wife was reading that on the train on Saturday, as we took the kids down to the soccer game in Jersey. Must be a good piece, because she's no Springsteen fan.

Re: The Olympics

Very much enjoying the Olympics so far - England putting on a great spectacle. NBC's decision to tape delay many events does annoy the hell out of me. They seem to have a very 1994 idea of how people consume media. Having said that I did spend the better part of the day on Sunday channel surfing aro...

Re: books, books, books

Just finished Barbara Kingsolver's "The Lacuna." Loved the first half of the book, which details how the main character, Harrison Shepherd, comes to befriend Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo (and later become their household cook in Mexico City). When Rivera and Kahlo agree to hide Trotsky fro...

Re: books, books, books

I just started on Matthew Kneale's "English Passengers". Nearly done with this one now - was suggested to me on Facebook by Jackson Monk. Very enjoyable account of an expedition to Tasmania in the mid-19th century. Involves a priggish clergyman, a naturalist with some bizarre notions abou...

I actually want to see the Abraham Lincoln movie. Yeah, it's a ridiculous premise, but there's nothing wrong with that. It may well be terrible, of course.

Re: books, books, books

WSS- nice list and use of free time- have you ever read Johnson's Stars at Noon or Fiskadoro ? Recommend them highly. The second is as close to Herman Melville's prose beauty as I have ever seen a post Melville writer get. No, I haven't. I am curious to read some of his other works. He has a very e...

Re: Recent CD Purchases

Excellent purchases, WSS. I loved what I heard from the new albums of Beach House and The Walkmen. Thanks. The Beach House is lovely. Sort of like Cocteau Twins crashing into Jesus and Mary Chain, with a dollop of Low. The Black Keys album is solid, if less consistent than their previous one, Broth...

Re: Recently viewed films

Caught "Dark Shadows" today with my wife at the urging of my three daughters who think Tim Burton is a movie wizard. Got what I expected-high camp with a diverting enough Johnny Depp, who has a good old time with his 'fish out of water' character and a cast that seems to be having fun in ...

Pair of great shows: -Squeeze and The English Beat at Roseland Ballroom. Fantastic evening of music, but I felt so oldddd.... Having said that, Glenn and the boys played a bunch of stuff I'd never heard them do, including ancient stuff like "Bang Bang," "Model," "The Knack&q...

Sweet. These are outstanding reissues, though the omission of Trust does seem strange.
