Re: What are you listening to right now?

Thank you for sharing- must confess I only knew the name Trashcan Sinatras- never reallly heard the music- will put them on a Pandora station and give them a spin- the clip you shared is lovely and haunting and he does have a beautiful voice in that song-are they British? The sound reminds me of She...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Would concur that is a great song along with " I Misunderstood" which I have seen him do live a few times to great effect- saw him most recently when he was supporting "My Old Kit Bag" in the states-small little 1000 seat theater in Ridgefield, Ct. It was him and an electric/acou...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Is that the "Action Packed: Best of the Capital Years" cd? Would concur with "Rumor and Sigh" although Mitchell Froom's over production has always put me on edge-personal favorite for me is "Hand of Kindness" complete with Richard busking on the Embankment- a close seco...

Re: EC's celebrity fans?

Oh Yes- when his wife was a performing guest at the White House recently- and was greeted by Mr/Mrs Obama- she mentioned her husband would have liked to have been there- when the President was told he was EC- he was incredulous-"you mean your husband is Elvis Costello?"

My pure punk knowledge is limited- will have to give this a try on Pandora Radio.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Congrats on the attainment of that sturdy number. Hope you toasted with your favorite libation and played a rousing version of "Powderfinger". "Fiesty" is a good word for that album and hopefully reflective of how you feel at your attained age-looking at 54[the dyslexic reverse] ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

As an indulgence- allowed myself recently to purchase the new compilation cd from the Jayhawks "Music From the North Country"- mostly for the generous bonus disk of material as I have the six studio CDs- finishing the biography of Gram Parsons "Twenty Thousand Roads" made me refl...

Re: Best EC Album of the Past 10 years

Well said AlexV-that the consistent quality of Ec's work has fallen off is, I think, undebateable- but I do not mourn this decline. That he continues to produce the occasional gem is fine with me- he is still actively producing music- I do not object to sifting through the dross for a gem-I concur t...

Re: books, books, books

Just finished "Twenty Thousand Roads" by David Meyer. Inspired to read by recent listenings to The Jayhawks. It filled in a lot of gaps in my Gram Parsons knowledge. Compellingly written- not your usual musical biography. Vibrant anecdotes and vignettes. I came away with a stronger feeling...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

You are so right- have had copies of all three in my collection since a young teenager-What We Did on Our Holidays was the first record I ever purchased-long may little Matty Groves ride- no serious collection should be without these three- was just thinking of getting tickets to see Richard with Lo...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I give thanks every day for Levon Helm- have been listening consistently to his latest- "Electric Dirt"- he is a national treasure. This album is everything that "Secret, Profane and Sugarcane" is not- sincere, simply elegant-lived music. Starting with a rousing version of the De...

Re: Best EC Album of the Past 10 years

Invisible Man- I think you properly voice and back up the concerns of Alex V and other long time attentive fans of Elvis. The consistency has long evaporated and each subsequent album gives a few nuggets but no total pleasure as a listening experience like the majority of the material through the mi...

Re: Best EC Album of the Past 10 years

When prest, would have to say Momofuko- with The Delivery Man or North a close second. I would give an honorable mention to For the Stars-I enjoy listening to the album and take it for the lark I think it was intended to be. I least enjoy Secret, Profane and Sugarcane- 6 or 8 white, middle-aged men ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Picked up the other day at the local Borders a copy of the 2 lp CD "Howlin' Wolf" and "Moanin' In The Moonlight" on Chess by Howlin' Wolf for all of $5.00. Have not had it off the cd player since then. Had forgotten how magnetic these songs and vocals can be- this is the motherlo...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Yes, it was my first "real concert" as a newly freed teenager allowed to take the train into NYC cemented a life long love for Neil-something that started for me with select Buffalo Springfield songs from a friend's collection and the occasional radio air play. I would also add that if you...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Otis, I thought I was the only one that actually purchased "Fork in the Road"- it has not stayed consistently on my cd player- but I dig it out every week or so. I like the blog off the cuff feeling-I cannot say I am turned on to all the car songs- but you are right when he is engaged he s...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Thank you for the re=heads up on the Tilbrook- will not rush to purchase it. You hit it right on the head with Difford and the value of a good lyricist. Difford is fortunate he has Boo Hewerdine to work with now-he gives him that legg up melodicly-just like Francis Dunnery did for his previous album...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Jackson, I have not had the chance to buy the Glenn Tilbrook-unfortunately he gets so little air play, not even on local student radio and there are too few stores left that even stock a CD-but I will keep looking for it. Have managed to get a copy of the last Chris Difford effort "The Last Tem...

Re: Michael Jackson RIP

Thank you, John, for posting the comments by Elvis in "Rolling Stone" regarding his insensitive Columbus remarks. I did not realize that he so clearly tried to be sincerely contrite after the genie was out of the bottle- Elvis's own Lord Jim moment-it has to be hard to live with an inciden...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

My daughter would concur- picked it up for her birthday as she is such a fan of Belle & Sebastion- she adores this record. For myself, it is hard to believe that is has been over 17 years since Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey released "Mavericks". I now have their recently released &q...

Re: Elvis, Bing Crosby

That Elvis should have a healthy regard for Bing Crosby should be no surprise-I think any real musician has a respect for him as a singer and musician-witness Gary Gidden's recent "Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams"-given Elvis's apparant encyclopedic knowledge and familiarity with Americ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Otis and Sam, that is a good connection-Fleet Foxes rely a bit more on popsong structure but the harmonic gorgeousness is definitely there. I used to be a more verbal listener- which is what attracted me to Elvis all those years ago- but over time I have really come to just appreciate the human voic...
