Re: A Voice In The Dark

I agree. melody, words, images, plus, now that we've got the chords (see NR chords thread), i can't believe the sheer physical force needed to get through the thing, let alone in tune, on time, and over all the hills and dales. And he pulls it off with such aplomb! I'm crazy about this song and his...

Re: Mansbridge One On One broadcast this weekend

Wow, that was really underwhelming--a real disappointment. Mansbridge totally wasted an opportunity to talk about smart, interesting stuff with a smart, interesting guy. He seemed really intent on wringing certain specific answers out of Elvis for no particular reason whatsoever--going on and on abo...

Re: Elvis doing corporate gig, NY, Dec. 16 '10

It doesn't appear that he's playing for bankers . Rather, the events looks to be some kind of reward or treat for people who have Citibank Visa Cards--a little fun in exchange for their mountains of debt. True, Citibank is paying him, but record sales aren't going to do it anymore. As Neil pointed o...

Re: Elvis on Prairie Home Companion this weekend

This was great, first time he's sung it live I think. Would love to hear him do it with the Metropol Orkest or similar. And he prefaced it with the verse from "Pennies From Heaven", if I'm not mistaken!! dave Yeah, Dave--that's a must! Maybe a small tour of orchestra shows in the spring? ...

Re: Your favorite EC album and why.

I don't get why WIWC or especially the magnificent Punch The Clock would be considered 'guilty pleasures'. This weekend when hearing Everyday I Write The Book had me hankering after PTC, it's snappy pop tunes sounded very refreshing after the over-long stodginess of parts of National Ransom. The La...

Re: National Ransom--The Lyrics

Superb analysis. I love reading these. Alexv has as well suggested that a reading of the lyric can be done that finds this song a possible metaphor for the trajectory of EC's career. Not implausible. Just think back to the recent New Yorker profile and its compelling telling of EC's recent performa...

Re: National Ransom--The Lyrics

Not so certain I hear 'nursery' rhyme in this song as a subtler echoing of the deadly sins as they reverberate within the 'mountain' music that Watson has celebrated and played throughout his distinguished career. The playing off his 'secrets', his purity-'the honey from the comb' against the 'sins...

Re: A Holiday Album? It seems like an inevitability...

C'mon..."Baby It's Cold Outside", with Elvis singing the coy girl part and Diana singing the "seducer" part? That's an automatic win.

I'm sure they could handle a holiday album without it sucking, but I'd still rather hold out for the Children's Album.

National Ransom--The Lyrics

Since we've had a couple of weeks to digest the delicious meal of NR, I thought it might be time for a thread devoted to the amazing lyrics. Lot to talk about here. C'mon, Neil--you're the best at this... One thing occurs to me this morning... Very much liking the nursery rhyme motif Elvis uses in D...

It's a great record I am even starting to like my lovely Jezabel, Agree! It just struck me tonight. It's good to have such a fine album to...

Re: Elvis profiled in Nov 8 2010 issue of The New Yorker

Ypsi, on the My Funny Valentine quote, to understand why he singles out that song all you have to do is read what precedes it: the prior sentence is saying that EC has a record geek’s taste in selecting cover songs but that he doesn't shy away from teh obvious cover choices. You would expect record...

Maybe at least some new clips for EC's website. The entire Leonard Lopate show the other night was videoed, that's for sure. Maybe it was WNYC's people, maybe not.
