Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

You hear it on Blood and Chocolate too. On "I Want You" not only does his voice catch but he also later messes up a line - "I know I''m going to feel this way until you kill it". It's all about the vibe of the thing ... besides, sometimes having a moment that's slightly "wro...

Thanks for posting that, John.

I'm quite fond of the "The Captains and the Kings/Faithful Departed" single (and of course,The Pogues). It's most unfortunate that this has happened to Phil - but at least he's hanging in there.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I've speculated about this before, but I think there is a key difference between this collaboration and Costello's previous ones. Costello/McCartney/Bacharach/Toussaint/etc... Usually, it's Costello honoring an elder statesman, and they like him but simply don't have the same encyclopedic grasp of ...

Re: Guitarist on Black and White World video

It was just the band he happened to have at the time. Steve wasn't available and EC apparently didn't think "maybe a different keyboard player should be drafted in to mime this one".

I knew about this. And Costello has certainly told Kate Bush that he'd like to work with her...

But yes, I guess it wasn't public knowledge, until now.

Re: Elvis Costello/The Imposters play Hunter Valley, Feb.2 '

He played Oliver's Army as an encore, so I don't think it was intended as a message. He needn't have done the encore, he'd already finished the main set with Peace, Love and Understanding. Oliver's Army was a chart hit in Australia - (#24) - so that might well be the reason it was played. He played ...

Re: EC and the Imposters play Auckland, NZ, Jan. 19, 2013

Thanks for forking out the NZ$5 Mr Foyle! A good interview. National Ransom is a fine album - certainly up there in his Top 10 - and would have been close to his all-time best with a little pruning. On the other hand, I see his point. There is such a thing as being too prolific - eventually the aver...

I'd say this is probably one of the best songs he has ever written.

I agree with migdd that this album will probably eventually be regarded as one of his finest by many.

Re: Elvis when you least expect it

The current activities in London challenge the creativity of the media. The Swedish national radio have created a Top 70- Best London songs. On place 31 suddenly EC appears with Hoover Factory. http://sverigesradio.se/sida/gruppsida.aspx?programid=4354&grupp=17779&artikel=5211748 The countd...

I'm thinking of putting all his writings together - not just the liner notes. In fact, I'm not just thinking of it, I've already done quite a fair bit of it. It makes a decentish book.

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

Honestly, there's a lot of huffing and puffing going in this thread, isn't there? I wouldn't read anything into a half-arsed Amazon page. Elvis updates his website all the time now, and he hasn't actually mentioned this new "Super Deluxe Package" yet - nor has there been any official press...

The only show that EC and the Attractions did in North America. Includes early versions of the "Trust" songs.

Re: SP&S Vs. NR: Which Do You Prefer ?

No contest. I think "National Ransom" might be the best album he's ever done. I agree that the sound is a bit ... muddy. Seems to be on purpose, given that it's the same team that did "SP&S". I have tweaked the sound to be more to my liking, and now it is fine.

I can now very much confirm that it is Bruce who is playing lead guitar. He actually quite fancies himself as a guitarist. You can only imagine what he thinks of Elvis' earlier efforts in this area.

Plus all the instrumentals EC did for "Straight to Hell"? And "The Courier"?

Like it a lot as well. To me, it sounds like the tune for Brilliant Mistake. Dave That's more or less what I thought after hearing it at the Beacon on the 24th. It certainly sounds like the arrangement for Brilliant Mistake ... or shall we say "Veronica in the style of Brilliant Mistake".
