That was uh... interesting. Lots of Baby Boomers reliving the good old days. Fine musicians, just not my bag.

Going to Handel's Guilio Cesare on Friday at the Metropolitan Opera. Actually have a spare ticket as well if anyone wants to go with me.

In Queens, NY. Tiny - basically a college auditorium.

I attended, and it almost put me off Bowie permanently. Then I saw him at Queens College after Heathen was released and it blew my socks off.

1986 - The Smiths are playing at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. I get in a fight with my sister over something stupid (can't remember anymore). In any case she ends up going with a friend, I stay home and never get to see Morrissey & Co. again.

"Train in Vain" was a hidden track on London Calling. That's about the only one I can remember that was really worth it.

Re: New Gig Thread

Good to hear! Sadly, he's not touring over here and there is nothing on the horizon, so I'll have to make do with records. My only recent "gig" if you could call it that, was "Parsifal" at the Metropolitan Opera last week. Easily the best thing I've ever seen there. Musically nea...

"Totem Pole" is actually my favorite off of Sidewinder.

I knew the Towne Crier was planning on moving but hadn't heard Beacon. Good for you, but it gives me a sad.

Jack, I love Lee Morgan. Such exuberance in his playing. Assume you have "The Sidewinder" with the outstanding Joe Henderson on tenor sax and Billy Higgins on drums?

Re: Winter's Solstice a personal rebirth

Think this is worthy of sharing from today's Slate- if you dread, like me, the oncoming shortest day of the year-perhaps this poem will provide some solace and strength- it always has for me and apparantly for the poet, Robert Pinsky. The sense of re-affirmation at the end is quite life affirming: ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Got tired of flipping through radio channels on my way home last week, popped a CD in the car stereo and came up trumps with Miles Davis' soundtrack for "Elevator to the Gallows," the early Louis Malle film noir gem. Hadn't listened to that in ages!

Would highly recommend Jim Hall's Concierto, which was issued on CTI in the 1970s. It includes a great version of "Concierto de Aranjuez," which Miles had also done on Sketches of Spain.

Re: Recently viewed films

I admired "Lincoln" (Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and James Spader in particular) but I can't say I loved it. The title is a misnomer. It's not really a film about Lincoln. Rather, it concerns the passage of the 13th Amendment and all of the political maneuvering that made it happen. Because...
