Re: For More Tears mp3
"too many teardrops"--yep, 96 tears. plus an echo of Nixon's "four more years" which always looked to me like a Nazi salute with the thumb tucked in and the four fingers splayed. And yet another appearance of the hangman--let him dangle, bullets for the newborn, you hung the moon...

Amazing. Even though I was never a HUGE fan, I'm still feeling the darkness.

perhaps a new band called "The Fakebooks"!! (w. special guest david schramm??? love his guitar playing on ylt's fakebook--those spare, trebly, sparkling embellishments--almost like burnishes-- that few lead guitar players do anymore)

Re: "Paying Off The National Ransom" - The mp3 Compilation
my sincere thanks as well. seven weeks, eh? in retrospect, I still feel extremely ambivalent about all this...great cd, great band, great new adventures and reworkings of older material, me incorrectly expecting/hoping that this would be a seam that could be tapped deeper and deeper, and, in the end...

Re: One Year Ago Today
"when this thing of wonder and beauty came on the radio. . ." Yep. February 3, 1967, Roy Clark's basement, not yet 17, the fading in and out of some American station, not believing what we were hearing, and then, the radio crackling even more, Strawberry Fields the next night. I remember w...

Re: Pump It Up in 6/8
i sure like this much more than the re-do of veronica, which i think rambles and unravels a bit too much. does anyone else find that e.c.'s voice often sounds flat on many of these recordings? not sure if it is just a recording issue or if my ear is betraying me, but i'm finding it quite noticeable....

thnks for the vid. i don't like this version much. seems to have taken something compact and exact and simply unraveled parts of it without really strong re-composing.

Some peanuts in celebration. When I was 16 in 1966, Dylan was 26 and Revolver was brand new. Now I'm very confused!

Re: the warmer latitudes of North
i mentioned this in another thread, but i would love to hear k.d.lang cover this album, all of it. i think that the strength and oddness of these songs would help challenge that bit voice of hers. her latestsongs are very bland and tuneless. i'm interested in what folks think of e.c's vocals on Nort...

Re: the warmer latitudes of North
I'm really with you on North and this sort of song in e.c.'s work. Even a great deal of Painted from Memory fits here, along, as you mentioned, with "you hung the moon" and Jimmie (and maybe even Voice in the Dark). I keep thinking, writing this, of "in the wee small hours of the morn...

Re: another new idea for Elvis; spin wheel yourself sometime
i still think that the whole thing is a really sad and unfortunate idea, and it seems especially unnecessary and sad after his latest n.r. ventures which i thought, mistakenly, meant something new was emerging. ah well, spin on!! but even if he comes to calgary (which I doubt), i won't go see this. ...

Re: Elvis Costello Announces The Return Of The Spectacular S
Frankly, I find that this is sounding stupider all the time. Perhaps the spinner could tweet their friends and put suggestions on their wall and take a poll to see who wants to decide what others don't want to hear!! THEN they could open an envelope and if it is the same song that they chose, they c...

"Am I forgetting an instance since then where he really tried to do something crazy in the way he made a record? "
but for its waitism, N.R. #2 is a bit odd...and, frankly, playing live with a band in a studio w. no auto tone etc., etc., is also a bit odd these days...

Re: APRIL 1 - NEW YORK SHOW - GRAMERCY THEATRE
thanks to all concerned for all the vids. i just watched oliver's army and loved it, but there was a creepy feeling involved as well. I'm finding in retrospect that I put more stake into National Ransom than i had even imagined, so seeing this felt a bit like a oldies show, like resignation and defe...

maybe not nostalgia or desperation. maybe just more timid that i've come to expect...no, maybe that isn't it either. there just seems to be something amiss about this, though...slightly disappointing, but i'm not sure what i was expecting. I guess, after what i found to be quite a venturous cd full ...

in fact, isn't this the first time he has done such a blatant "repetition" like this? other than, of course, touring with the same band. there may be lots of others i've forgotten or repressed. But this one really seems like reviving an old trick and seems sort of too "obvious" a...
