Re: Blame it on Kaine

Several reports mentioned that Kaine adopted "Blame It on Cain" as a sort of joking theme song, for when he was getting beaten up on by the opposition or in the media.

Re: Seeing Elvis Costello's Whitton

Thanks, John. I suppose it's possible that the building was accepting tenets before it was officially opened. It's also possible that sign on the front contains a typo in the date. More seriously, real estate websites list this building as having been built in 1976. FWIW, in my experience, th...

Re: Elvis & The Imposters play Liverpool , July 11 2016

EC has openly said he dislikes "She" when asked (and refusing to) play it at gigs in the US, where is wasn't any kind of hit. Would it be super-mean of me to say that Mr. ecsongbysong is a much better Twitteriste than he is a (multi-thousand word) bloggist? Inverse-proportionally better, e...

Re: Least favourite lyric

This could have been a massive hit if he'd made it a slightly more conventional love song lyric - one to rival Alison. Alas, it wasn't to be. Apparently it's about someone hallucinating, and it's meant to be the crazy visions of a madman. Not a "madman", but rather a falling-down drunk, l...

Re: Elvis Costello As a 10 year old picture? (R.Whites)

Does that mean that the other guys in the band here are Flip City? - first and only live footage? No, this was probably before Flip City existed. I think it must have been just after EC moved back to London. In any case, in EC explains in his memoir, this was filmed the same day the jingle was reco...

One more thing: Dylan, McCartney, Paul Simon, to name a few, continue to record "albums"--does that make them hopelessly out of touch? Dylan, McCartney, and let's add Springsteen, are part of the tiny uppermost echelon of the music business that still makes money from selling recorded mus...

I've probably asked this question before, but since it's still nagging me, I'll throw it out again.... I'm glad that EC continues to perform into (as of August) his sixties, but is it too much to ask, hope, that he'll simply record an album with the Imposters (the last one was Momufuku--over NINE y...

Re: A Face In The Crowd: new musical

Maybe this is a term of art that doesn't translate outside the Greater New York area, but my understanding is that "the book" in this context means exactly what you'd expect a playwright to provide for a musical play: the script. You can't really say Ruhl has no experience writing the book...

On a slightly more serious note... Echoing what John Foyle said at the very beginning of this thread about how seeing EC's Whitton home gave him a new perspective on EC's drive to get his career started, the things he wrote about his early adult life in UM&DI -- and, to a much lesser extent, the...

Ha-ha, VG! :D I actually refrained from posting some of the other photos I found online, like Google Street View shots and the interiors of homes for sale or rent, because (non-famous!) people do live there, after all. In fact, someone named Burgoyne still lives on EC's first wife's old street, or d...

These days, those of us who can't trek John's EC heritage trail in person can do it online. Re: Why no Official Flip City collection?

Ever since I read about the existence of, never mind heard, the song " Baseball Heroes ", I've kind of wondered why EC would have so much interest in American baseball -- an interested never to be evinced again -- as to write a whole song about it. Of course, UM&DI solved that little m...

Well, sometimes the more complicated hypothesis turns out to be the correct one. I'm still sticking with the idea that all three photos were taken on the same day. Unless EC carried that little white comb with him everywhere in those days.

The door he's standing in front of in the pic (by Plummer) that I posted the link to appears to be the same one behind him in the head-scratching pic we are trying to identify. So you're suggesting EC was photographed at the same location, wearing different combinations of the same clothes, with the...
