Last weekend, Lelia and I went to DownTown West, the indie-friendly movie theater in Knoxville, and caught the highly acclaimed documentary Capturing The Friedmans. For those who have not seen it, I will try not to spoil some of the suprises for you except to say that it is one of the most devastati...
The thing I like the most about it, so far, is that it has this expansive, almost cinematic quality to it. Personally, I think that all of the sonic experiments and mood pieces help flesh out the "proper" songs and establish where it is Jay Farrar wants to take us with the album. The songs...
-Booker T & The MG's
-The Funk Brothers (Motown's house musicians. Primarily the early to mid 1960's lineup)
-The Band
-Rockpile
-The Gourds (I defy anyone to listen to Cow, Fish, Fowl or Pig and tell me these guys aren't in league with The Band in their prime)
-The Blasters
-Los Lobos
My girlfriend and I have Blue Boy, Cobblestone Runway, Other Songs and Whereabouts. All of them are excellent, although Blue Boy is my favorite. I would consider Ron Sexsmith on the shortlist of top songwriters of his generation.

Have you seen the documentary film Capturing The Friedmans? I think that film answers your question much better than any paltry explanation I can cough up.
Bobster's right. Hepburn, Peck, Phillips.......true giants who put real numbers on the board. I have a sick theory that it took us losing Hepburn and Peck to finally get a turd like Strom Thurmond to shuffle off this mortal coil. Who do you think we can get for Sam Phillips? Perhaps that idiot Bill ...
Brilliant answer !!! Next question: Why do snooty golf club members always wear too much salmon? Perhaps.....because.....well, you see.... *Door flings open* *Sound of El Vez's feet hitting the pavement* *Turns ignition, peels out of driveway* ......so there you have it, friend! all the best, El Vez
i don't know, i'm getting squeamish. i think the answer to my question may have been obvious. and the answer to bluechair's question would appear to have been Golden Throats Volumes 1-3. i'll give it one more try though. el vez, who would win a fight between shirley manson and shelby lynne? Shelby ...
El Vez, I love my husband very much, and most of the time we get along wonderfully, but his mother is a total witch! (To use a polite word!) She insists on coming over for lunch every Sunday, and she always makes me feel like my cooking isn't good enough. She insists that my husband thinks my cooki...
El Vez, I'm hosting a party on Saturday night. What CD's can I play to ensure people won't want to leave? Good question! I would start out with some classic, 60's-era Motown. The Temptations or Smokey Robinson would be great icebreakers. The Four Tops can be a bit overwhelming with Levi Stubbs' ear...
Sam Phillips, the genius pioneer behind Sun Records, has just passed away. He was 80 years old. This is a sad, sad thing. He was responsible for getting a lot of great music on record and giving so many important artists their first big break. Rest in peace.
I'm a very big Terry Zwigoff fan. Crumb and Ghost World are both very special films that have enriched my life greatly. I like John Sayles although I find him a little too dry and airless at times. Unfortunately, I have yet to see a Ken Loach film.
Actually, I believe in giving films extra points for ambition, even if they don't achieve it. I've had this argument for years but, assuming a film isn't merely stupidly pretentious (which I hate as much as anyone), I prefer that people over-reach rather than under-reach. I'll take a "bad"...
