Yes. Didn't Vine once say that TYM is his favourite LP of all time? I don't think he's on record yet as to what he thinks of the Spanish version, but I hope he likes it!Goon Squad wrote:Phil Jupitus, Alison Moyet, and Jeremy Vine.

Re: We're All Cowards Now
My question is…how did Elvis come up with perfect songs for a dystopian lockdown before the boot actually fell? Is he psychic, or did his elite friends clue him in on what was about to happen? Hmmm? Viva Van Morrison. We are of course each welcome to our own opinion. Welcome to mine : this post is ...

Re: Mighty Like A Rose at 30
One of Elvis' most under-rated LPs. 'Broken' is a tuneless dirge and (possibly controversial opinion) 'So Like Candy' doesn't quite work. Everything else is top-drawer Elvis. Lyrically dense, musically aggressive - the whole thing has a quirky, ragged, smack-in-the-face energy that surpasses Spike a...

I definitely saw Christopher Eccleston as I was leaving a gig in Manchester in the 1990s. And as we know, Alan Bleasdale is a big fan.

I'm with Deportee on this one. The more I listen to it, the more I think it is a remarkable thing. A coruscating critique of the way society is operating right now, but brilliantly, without naming or pointing fingers at anyone. Very much in the vein of Shipbuilding, where Elvis seems to be saying 'I...

Re: A girl named Wendy
I still can't believe that there has never been a proper release of all of EC's Wendy James demos. I thought for sure we would get them during the Rhino campaign but now I wonder if we ever will. I've always thought it would make a perfect limited edition vinyl release-- it's too obscure and raw to...

Fair point but that's an occupational hazard of translating lyrics into another language. Obviously, wordplay, rhyming and puns are among Elvis' most important skills as a songwriter, but none of those things survive translation.sweetest punch wrote:What does get lost is Costello’s brilliantly cynical wordplay.

What I'd REALLY like to hear is TYM (remastered or not) without any vocals. I wonder if that's around somewhere.... Absolutely it's 'around', as for Spanish Model they worked from the original masters which presumably have the vocals on a separate track. So it would be perfectly possible, I guess, ...

Isn't it a bit worrying thatmany people seem to enjoy the (almost complete) absence of Elvis Costello on this release? He had already proved that he doesn't have to wite new lyrics (Wise Up Ghost) write melodies (too many songs in recent years) sing in tune (first in concert, recently also on recor...

I can understand where you are both coming from. In my view it is the word “disturbing” that is generating the heat. Personally this album does nothing for me. It is my ignorance I guess that means I can’t get into it. I’m pleased others are enjoying it though. That's fine, and I don't think it's a...

Two listens in, I'm loving this. Thought it would be a curio to add to the collection that I'd listen to once, but actually I can see myself going back to this several times. It's great fun. OK, the bits that really click for me are the bonus 'brutal' version of 'Pump It Up' (which is EC and the Att...

NINE albums? If we count Look Now, Spanish Model and Clockface, that still leaves six. I presume one of them is Face in the Crowd. The rest... are anyone's guess! And at a pinch, one of them could have been the 'expanded' PFM for which he's been writing songs with Burt? Still leaves four unaccounte...

Is this the first one we've heard that significantly reworks the original lyrics (rather than just singing them in Spanish)?

So, let me get this right, Despite being billed as a book about 'Elvis Costello and the Attractions' (and featuring only 70s/80s LPs on the cover), this book actually covers all LPs (including solo/Imposters/whatever), up to and including...? This, from the announcement of the tour, adds fuel to the fire that we may be getting a new EC and the Imposters LP before the end of the year?

Ah, that helps, thank-you. it does look like the Mick Jones guitar part was omitted from the original, put back in for the '1984 Dance Mix' and is also there (somewhere) on the Sebastian Krys remix which has just been released?verbal gymnastics wrote:Also http://elviscostello.info/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=7908

That's a new one on me. Typo/human error, or could it turn out that Mick did play on 'Pump It Up' after all? This version of Pump It Up was released as a b-side on the 12" of Only flame in town. So it is true! This is exciting, I'd forgotten about the '1984 Dance Mix'. So what's the likeliest ...

Here's a curio. I'd always been led to believe that Elvis wanted Mick Jones to play on 'Pump It Up' but that the Clash were wary of him being 'poached', so in the end, he only played on 'Big Tears'. But the Wikii news article for this LP (presumably written by Elvis himself or by Sebastian Krys) ref...
