Re: Trust Survivor - Round 1

The obvious choice is on it's way out first hurdle by the looks of the current voting. Is there any way you can switch off the voting results until very the end of the poll? It would be good to vote without knowing the general consensus. That said, no worries at all of course if you can't switch tha...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor - Results

I know polls like this are not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but I don't find them a negative thing, they're a poll about what's best from an amazing list of songs, rather than an assassination of the unapproved songs. As an unashamed Elvis geek, I am happy to see them continue as kind of day b...

Re: New song ‘Hetty O’Hara Confidential’, July 10, 2020

Bedlam is another of those, you are right. I did think about putting it down but forgot. I was like you with Bedlam, (Cousin Pete doesn't like it either) but one night I was Powerwalking from Liverpool Street to Stratford with the iPod classic on shuffle when Pete's drums came crashing in and I had...

Re: New song ‘Hetty O’Hara Confidential’, July 10, 2020

I agree I don't think Elvis and Weller were every really friends probably more to do with both of them being grumpy bastards. :D LOL Sheep! I like most of Elvis's stuff in general but I agree there's the odd occasion when the tumble of words is too much, like there's no room to breathe. But of cour...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor - Results

I voted for Accidents to win but it was such a close run thing. Both fantastic songs. I went with Accidents cos it's got that heartbreaking mood, deeply sad yet somehow uplifting melody. And there's just something about that chorus that's magical - I never tire of this song.

Time to dig this out, from 1983. They liked each other enough to share the stage back then:

Actually, it's growing on me. The riff and crazy radar sounds after the hook line are fantastic.

I agree, Kosi - Party Girl is one of my top 3 from this album, too, for all the reasons you've described. Love that song so much!!!

Re: New song ‘Hetty O’Hara Confidential’, July 10, 2020

I agree, Verbal. I've had a couple of listens and there's a chaotic, crockery-set-in-a-box-tumbling-down-the-stairs vibe that I can't get into - and the verbosity bothers me too. The hook line doesn't quite sit for me. That said it's definitely interesting new work and I'll give it some more spins! ...

When you see the way this is panning out, the top two are not going to have a Rizla paper between them! This top 5 is definitely the 'right' top 5, I reckon!

Re: New song ‘Hetty O’Hara Confidential’, July 10?

By the sound of the lyrics and the look of the images, this is going to be a very dark and twisted song. I presume they were recorded before the lockdown. It's interesting that he said when in lockdown, he'd suddenly started writing joyous, happy songs. Sounds like we're gonna need those as an antid...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor Round 7

This is shaping up as expected. All the expected 5 best tracks are in there, with the final random 6th. Once the 6th is gone, that's where the battle begins. But as we can see how people are voting, it looks like there's gonna be a clear winner

It's funny isn't it - I've been voting Senior Service out since the start - I mean, it's not terrible cos very little Elvis is terrible - but as soon as I saw the list I thought 'Senior Service' is the weakest. But all the love for Senior Service here is making me wanna revisit it. I'll give it a sp...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor - Round 4

Agreed - though this was a v popular album at the time cos of the massive hit Oliver's Army, I don't think it's weathered all that well. I hardly ever put it on - of his first great run of albums, this is probably one of the weakest, though it does contain four all-time Elvis classics - or five if y...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor - Round 2

I think I'm right in saying that 'Sunday's Best' was written with Ian Dury in mind, and you can totally see this being on New Boots and Panties album. I think it's a great satirical song, and the waltz vibe with the sarcastic litany of horrors in the lyrics makes it a success, I'd say! But it's hard...

Re: Shoes without heels

Agreed on all points! I think KOA would be an even better album if these songs had been replaced with the ones you suggest: Eisenhower Blues (my least favourite EC cover version) Poisoned Rose (it's okay, but Shoes Without Heels walks all over it my opinion - pun intended) Glitter Gulch (I like it, ...

Re: Elvis self-harmony: best example

Got to admit Neil that somehow the single version of Blue Chair got to me before the LP version and remains my preference for the song. Sure it had the kitchen sink thrown in to the production but at least it birthed the whole of Kojak Variety! Fair enough! There's room for everyone's opinion. I th...

Re: Elvis self-harmony: best example

Blue Chair (single version) has a fine chorus of little Elvises as does You Tripped At Every Step. Yeah - I've always had a problem with the single version of Blue Chair. It's such perfect slice of bouncy pop on the album version, that the subsequent deconstruction and reconstruction of the song ha...

Elvis self-harmony: best example

I just listened to Brilliant Mistake.

His self-harmony on 'I was a fine idea at the time' x2 at the end is the best thing ever.
