Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 3

Haha Sulky, agreed, that's an amazing middle eight. Another example of Elvis's trenchant chronicling of men's helpless and usually disastrous thrall to the spell of sex.

Bonkers, brilliant raucous riot of a song - and that final damning line of the lyric!

Now to check out the next agonsing choice x

Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 2

Thanks for mentioning Temptation though - that’s my next one for the chop ! Not that my opinion matters  That's what I went for in the end for day two. Course your opinion matters - share it! It's going to get even tougher. I wonder if my favourite track will make the top 3? I'm keeping shtum!

Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 2

Don't pick Black and White World. It's an insanely good song. Listen to that arrangement. It's incredible. And again, full on fun punnery, (I know he was criticised for this eventually, but it is fun in a less serious song like this) Since it's a lot about pictures and photography somehow (paparrazi...

Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 2

Holy f*ck. This is brutal. It's my fault. IT'S ALL MY FAULT. I should have voted for Temptation. I like Temptation, but it's probably the song with the least tension in it on the album. Or is that Clowntime? I'm not trying to influence anything.

Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 1

Doing the 40 year anniversary thing, I noticed 5ive Gears was played quite a bit on the U.K. tour and even with Martin Belmont in Europe and it's areal "roadrunner" ( pun intended!) live. I'm quite surprised it didn't go on to be a live favourite for Elvis. I opted for Human Touch as my f...

Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 1

I had to choose something so I went with 5ive Gears in Reverse. Even though it's fantastic. Great riff, great organ, Elvis was in fully punny imagery mode in these lyrics, the motoring imagery comes tumbling out here: If your patience is EXHAUSTed And you still cannot decide And you're sitting in th...

Re: Get Happy!! Survivor - Round 1

Weirdly, B-Movie was the one that sprang to mind first. But it's actually totally fantastic, that bass is insane. The trenchant lyrics and fun wordplay 'Too real, too real... (reel to reel)'. Crazy melody.

Garrrgh this is going to be agonising.

Incredible album. This is going to be tough. I think I know what the last two are going to be. And I know what my favourite is. Again, how can you say 'favourite' out of so many amazing songs?

'Trust' insight

Top Balcony pointed out the 'Uncut' online article: https://www.uncut.co.uk/features/elvis-costello-elvis-costello-time-going-backwards-111782/ I was intrigued by Elvis saying he based the album on trying to rewrite existing hits! 'Message In A Bottle' and 'Brass In Pocket'. You can see what you mea...

Re: Imperial Bedroom Survivor - RESULTS

Yeah, I agree that it needs to be changed at the same time every day so that we can all get to vote. I missed some of them. One IB song I've kinda got into recently is 'Boy With A Problem' - it's mental, that. Beautiful love song and melancholy melody but the lyrics are flat-out brutal (literally, i...

Re: Imperial Bedroom Survivor - RESULTS

Thank you, that was fun - though harrowing! Yes, Beyond Belief is incredible because I think it's a structureless song, yet it totally grips you without you knowing where it's heading. Amazing. And the bass drum - I swear it's like a heartbeat that's having arrhythmia. And the cymbals. And the whole...

I am so gutted that apart from the far more important matter of people losing their lives, this virus has denied us a new Elvis/Nick Lowe album! Grraaaargh!!! It would've been in the can by now!

I'm sorry, but in this case, Sophie's Choice has triplets. I cannot possibly choose between these three magical, perfect pieces of pop. Sorry. You'll just have to shoot me.

Re: Top 3 Elvis Costello Album Covers?

We've had this before, but it's always fund to remind ourselves King of America (original, non-colourised version) - the unreadable expression is priceless and somehow hilarious, yet timeless This Year's Model - classic new wave image, much imitated Trust - again, the slightly unreadable expression ...
