Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Round 1

Whoa, I've been dreading this one!!! This always vies for top place for me, with TYM, Trust, Get Happy!! and Brutal Youth. I kinda think it tends to be in the top slot for me more than any other, so it might even be safe to say it's my favourite album of all. At least the first evictee is an easy one!

Re: Do you have a favorite EC concert?

It would probably have to be my first, aged 18 - Liverpool Royal Court, 8 and 9 Dec 1986 - Blood & Chocolate/Spinning Songbook tour. My brother and I got a train from South Wales and stayed at my great aunt and uncle's in Wallasey, and went into Liverpool each night for the two amazing gigs. It ...

Re: New song "We Are All Cowards Now", August 14, 2020

I spend a lot of time listening to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits! Oh Lord, I know I'm going to be unpopular for saying this, but I've never, ever managed to get into Tom Waits. A friend of mine recently said he'd tried listening to Rain Dogs, and he said it was like listening to the Cookie...

Re: New song "We Are All Cowards Now", August 14, 2020

I've had a third listen. God, it's a downer. I think the fact it fades out with little variation for the last few stanzas, and with no sculpted climax, and with that image of the withering flower: it gives a vibe of hopelessness and despair that really drags me down. That's fine, that's the intentio...

Lots of analogue-era imagery in these titles - esp newspapers., but also clocks and radios (but not clock radios) Newspaper pane Hetty O'Hara Confidential (gossip columns) Byline Hey Clockface Radio is Everything No digital - though it looks like Elvis (Eammon) is a dab hand at digital animation the...

Re: New song "We Are All Cowards Now", August 14, 2020

This new one is quite opaque - hoping it's a grower. A lot of words thrown at it, the scansion is deliberately ignored sometimes. Hard to get a handle on. The mood is soooooo dark and despairing. Loved the Nero and Caligula gags.

Re: New album Hey Clockface will be released October 30, 2020

That song Hey Clockface that Elvis played in Steve's lockdown show was really not in keeping with Hetty or No Flag - so it's either gonna be a very eclectic album or Elvis might have reworked it to be more in the style of the Helsinki songs. Time will tell - which, let's face it, is rather apt!

Re: Bruce Thomas interview on WFMU

This interview is definitely worth a listen - it's about two hours long. Great details about Bruce's career and his rancour with Elvis is still there. When he admits that Elvis was a generous boss in terms of pay, he says he'd better go for a sit down cos he's said something nice about Elvis. Nice t...

Re: Trust Survivor - Results

Really hard to call this, but I guess New Lace Sleeves is just a fraction better. Hard to compare such different songs though! But the slow burn of the song is always so mesmerising, as is the sadness and cynicism of the whole thing. Brilliant, brilliant song.

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 10

'You'll Never Be A Man' is a copper-bottomed classic and is far better than 'Watch Your Step'. Watch Your Step is such a nasty little number (deliberately), whereas You'll Never Be A Man is one of Elvis's most joyous songs, I reckon. AND STEVE'S PIANO!!!! Blissfully lilting, tiptoeing, wandering and...

Not happy about this result. Strict Time is such an incredible rhythmic/melodic tumbling ride through the hills on an out of control train. Watch Your Step is fantastic but it doesn't thrill like Strict Time. That song continues the shocking violence featured on the album - 'broken noses hung up on ...

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 8

Big Sister's Clothes - what a weird and wonderful song. I mean, what is that intro? It's brilliant. And the opening line is typical Elvis Costello: 'Sheep to the slaughter - oh, I thought this must be love.' Typical juxtaposition of sour and sweet. And some classic Costello - 'she's got eyes like sa...

From a Whisper is fabulous and I love the pairing of Glenn's angelically sweet voice and Elvis's brutal barnstorming. White Knuckles is an astounding arrangment, melody, the playing, the singing. I love the way the vocal starts, like the melody has dropped out of the air. Steve's twinkly bits and th...

So Different Finger has been given the finger. Love that song, what a classically-written country song, superb little gem. Still, it's a modest song, and there are more majestic numbers on this album that mean it was never gonna win. But what a great song about lying to yourself. The image is a bril...

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 4

Wooo - I agree that Pretty Words should be an early exit - I mean, Elvis's lesser songs are still packed with great stuff - lyrically and with what the Attractions are doing, there's lots to enjoy, but the melody isn't his usual captivating, lapel-grabbing best. Lover's Walk, though, that's a real h...
